  • Scalable Validation of Industrial Equipment using a Functional DSMS
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent Information Systems. - : Springer. - 0925-9902 .- 1573-7675. ; 48:3, s. 553-577
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A stream validation system called SVALI is developed in order to continuouslyvalidate data streams from industrial equipment. The functional data model of SVALI allows the user to dene meta-data and queries about the equipment in terms of types and functions. The two system functions model-andvalidate and learn-and-validate provide such validation functionality. The experiments show that parallel stream processing enables SVALI to scale very well with respect to response time and system throughput. The paper is based on a real world application for wheel loader slippage detection at Volvo Construction Equipment.

  • Determination of the small amount of proteins interacting with TiO2 nanotubes by AFM-measurement
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Biomaterials. - : Elsevier. - 0142-9612 .- 1878-5905. ; 192, s. 368-376
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Detecting the small amounts of proteins interacting effectively with the solid film electrodes surface still remains a challenge. To address this, in this work, a new approach was proposed by the combination of the adhesion forces and the molecular interaction measured with AFM. Cytochrome c (Cyt C) interacting effectively with TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) was chosen as a probe. The amounts of Cyt C molecules interacting effectively on TNAs surface (CTNA) range from 5.5×10-12 to 7.0×10-12 mol/cm2 (68.2-86.8 ng/cm2) and they are comparable with the values obtained by the electrochemistry method in the literature, in evidence of the accuracy of this AFM-based approach. The reliability of the proposed approach was further verified by conducting Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) measurements and estimating the enhancement factor (EF). This interaction-based AFM approach can be used to accurately obtain the small amounts of adsorbed substances on the solid film electrodes surface in the applications such as biosensors, biocatalysis, and drug delivery, etc.

  • Developing Electrolyte Perturbed-Chain Statistical Associating Fluid Theory Density Functional Theory for CO2 Separation by Confined Ionic Liquids
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 122:27, s. 15464-15473
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electrolyte perturbed-chain statistical associating fluid theory (ePC-SAFT) classical density functional theory (DFT) was developed to describe the behavior of pure ionic liquid (IL) and CO2/IL mixture confined in nanopores, in which a new ionic functional based on the ionic term from ePC-SAFT was proposed for electrostatic free-energy contribution. The developed model was verified by comparing the model prediction with molecular simulation results for ionic fluids, and the agreement shows that the model is reliable in representing the confined behavior of ionic fluids. The developed model was further used to study the behavior of pure IL and CO2/IL mixture in silica nanopores where the IL ions and CO2 were modeled as chains that consisted of spherical segments with the parameters taken from the bulk ePC-SAFT. The results reveal that the nanoconfinement can lead to an increased CO2 solubility, and the solubility increases with increasing pressure. The averaged density of pure IL and solubility of CO2 are strongly dependent on pore sizes and geometries. In addition, the choice of IL ions is very important for the CO2 solubility. Overall, the modeling results for silica-confined systems are consistent with available molecular simulation and experimental results.

  • Supplementary Cementitious Materials in Building Blocks—Diagnosing Opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 15:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable building should at least be affordable and carbon neutral. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is a region struggling with housing affordability. Residential buildings are often constructed using block-based materials. These are increasingly produced using ordinary Portland cement (PC), which has a high carbon footprint. Using alternative Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) for block production might reduce the footprint and price. The purpose is to assess the level of information for SCM use in blocks in SSA and to use this information for Diagnosing the improvement potential as part of an Opportunity Study. Results from the scoping review show that aggregated information on SCMs and the quantities available is limited. Diagnosing the theoretical improvement potential in using cassava peel ash, rice husk ash, corn cob ash, volcanic ash and calcined clays, indicates that SCMs could represent a yearly value of approximately USD 400 million, which could be transferred from buying cement to local production. The use of SCMs could save 1.7 million tonnes of CO2 per year and create some 50,000 jobs. About 5% of the PC used for block production could be substituted, indicating that, in addition to using SCMs, other solutions are needed to secure production of sustainable blocks.

  • Binder jetting of the AlCoCrFeNi alloy
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Additive Manufacturing. - : Elsevier. - 2214-8604 .- 2214-7810. ; 27, s. 72-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High density components of an AlCoCrFeNi alloy, often described as a high-entropy alloy, were manufactured by binder jetting followed by sintering. Thermodynamic calculations using the CALPHAD approach show that the high-entropy alloy is only stable as a single phase in a narrow temperature range below the melting point. At all other temperatures, the alloy will form a mixture of phases, including a sigma phase, which can strongly influence the mechanical properties. The phase stabilities in built AlCoCrFeNi components were investigated by comparing the as-sintered samples with the post-sintering annealed samples at temperatures between 900 °C and 1300 °C. The as-sintered material shows a dominant B2/bcc structure with additional fcc phase in the grain boundaries and sigma phase precipitating in the grain interior. Annealing experiments between 1000 °C and 1100 °C inhibit the sigma phase and only a B2/bcc phase with a fcc phase is observed. Increasing the temperature further suppresses the fcc phase in favor for the B2/bcc phases. The mechanical properties are, as expected, dependent on the annealing temperature, with the higher annealing temperature giving an increase in yield strength from 1203 MPa to 1461 MPa and fracture strength from 1996 MPa to 2272 MPa. This can be explained by a hierarchical microstructure with nano-sized precipitates at higher annealing temperatures. The results enlighten the importance of microstructure control, which can be utilized in order to tune the mechanical properties of these alloys. Furthermore, an excellent oxidation resistance was observed with oxide layers with a thickness of less than 5 μm after 20 h annealing at 1200 °C, which would be of great importance for industrial applications.

  • Improving Life Cycle Sustainability and Profitability of Buildings through Optimization: A Case Study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Buildings. - : MDPI. - 2075-5309. ; 12:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Building developers are continuously seeking solutions to increase saleable/rentable floor area and thus the profitability of investments, especially in large/dense cities where the real estate/rental values are high and shortage of available land results in smaller building footprints. Application of passive energy efficiency measures (e.g., thick insulation in walls) not only affects the life cycle sustainability of buildings, but also the floor area and its profitability. This can affect the decisions made on the choice of measures when aiming to improve sustainability. In line with limited studies in this context, a case study is presented here in which multi-objective optimization was used to explore the impact of various passive energy efficiency measures on the life cycle sustainability when accounting for the profitability of the floor area. The building case was a high-rise apartment based on a standardized building concept situated in different locations in Sweden, namely Vindeln, Gothenburg, and Stockholm. The findings indicated that, regardless of the location, use of (1) thick cellulose coating for the roof, and (2) moderately thick expanded polystyrene for the floor, were necessary to improve the life cycle sustainability. However, the optimal wall insulation was dependent on the location; in locations with high real estate values, the scope for using thick and conventional insulations (mineral wool/cellulose) was limited due to the significant economic loss caused by floor area reductions. In general, the optimization identified optimal solutions that could save up to 1410.7 GJ energy, 23 tonnes CO2e, and 248.4 TEUR cost from a life cycle perspective relative to the building’s initial design.

  • Transient nucleation in selective laser melting of Zr-based bulk metallic glass
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Materials & design. - : Elsevier. - 0264-1275 .- 1873-4197. ; 195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The crystallization rate during selective laser melting (SLM) of bulk metallic glasses (BMG) is a critical factor in maintaining the material's amorphous structure. To increase the understanding of the interplay between the SLM process and the crystallization behavior of BMGs, a numerical model based on the classical nucleation theory has been developed that accounts for the rapid temperature changes associated with SLM. The model is applied to SLM of a Zr-based BMG and it is shown that the transient effects, accounted for by the model, reduce the nucleation rate by up to 15 orders of magnitude below the steady-state nucleation rate on cooling, resulting in less nuclei during the build process. The capability of the proposed modelling approach is demonstrated by comparing the resulting crystalline volume fraction to experimental findings. The agreement between model predictions and the experimental results clearly suggests that transient nucleation effects must be accounted for when considering the crystallization rate during SLM processing of BMGs.

  • A proposed preliminary maturity grid for assessing sustainability reporting based on quality management principles
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The TQM Journal. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1754-2731 .- 1754-274X. ; 31:3, s. 451-466
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeSustainability reports (SRs) could be viewed as organisational measurements of sustainability performance. The purpose of this paper is to discuss how well SRs are measuring and communicating sustainability and how reporting could be assessed and improved by presenting a maturity grid based on quality management principles.Design/methodology/approachQuality management students have assessed publicly available SRs. A total of 55 student assessments have been analysed by the author and used to indicate how understandable reports are. Quality management principles and input from the student assessments have been used to propose a maturity grid for sustainability reporting quality.FindingsThe indication is that SRs are not easy to interpret. The word sustainability aspect used should be replaced with impact on vital stakeholder needs. Guidelines for analysing reports could be improved by using process focus to clearly describe scope of reporting as the entire value chain.Research limitations/implicationsResults are limited to assessing how sustainability is measured. How sustainable the organisations are is not assessed. The research is ongoing, and the proposed matrix is preliminary needing validation and further modification.Practical implicationsThe proposed maturity grid for sustainability reporting forms a good basis for further development of SRs and the critical review of them.Social implicationsResults indicate a need to report sustainability in the entire value chain and to focus more on vital stakeholder needs such as poverty and climate change.Originality/valueThe paper discusses a field of synergies between quality and sustainability management, which is important but still sparingly researched.
