  • Comparative process tracing. : Making historical comparison structured and focused
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Philosophy of the social sciences. - : SAGE Publications. - 0048-3931 .- 1552-7441. ; 47:1, s. 44-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article introduces comparative process tracing (CPT) as a two-step methodological approach that combines theory, chronology, and comparison. For each studied case, the processes leading “from A to B” are reconstructed and analyzed in terms of ideal-type social mechanisms and then compared by making use of the identified mechanisms and ideal-type periodization. Central elements of CPT are path dependence, critical junctures and focal points, social mechanisms, context, periodization, and counterfactual analysis. The CPT approach is described, discussed, and compared with more formal and deterministic forms of process tracing, which are found to be less fruitful for systematic comparison.

  • Bostadsfrågan som politik och intressekamp
  • 2023
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Universal and Selective Housing Regimes as Broad and Narrow Policy Fields. A Conceptual Proposal and its Application to Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Tidsskrift for boligforskning. - : Scandinavian University Press / Universitetsforlaget AS. - 2535-5988. ; 6:2, s. 90-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A fundamental distinction in welfare state research is the one between universal and selective policies. Consequently, housing researchers often categorize national housing regimes under one of these headings. However, since housing is typically distributed via markets – although with state correctives – and not directly by means of state distribution, the borderline between universal and selective housing policies is seldom clear-cut. This article proposes a framework that can be applied both to housing and other welfare sectors, based on the distinction between a broad and narrow policy field and applicable to institutions, discourses and outcomes on different political levels: national welfare regimes, sector regimes (like housing) and policy instruments. In the article, this framework is applied critically to the Swedish housing regime, which is often understood as being universal. Swedish housing policy and its central policy instruments are analysed in terms of universality and selectivity, together with the housing discourse and the social and economic outcome. The article also discusses how the development of recent years, for example, the increased commercialism of public housing, the spread of so-called social contracts and the recurring ideas about “social housing” can be understood in terms of universal and selective housing policy.

  • Marginalization and Riots : A Rationalistic Explanation of Urban Unrest
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Housing, Theory and Society. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1403-6096 .- 1651-2278. ; 37:2, s. 162-179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urban riots are typically carried out by individuals who live in residential areas that are relatively marginalized socially, economically and politically. Previous research has discussed several aspects of deprivation that may help explain this relationship. Contributing further to this research, we aim to explain why marginalization produces riots by developing a rationalistic specification of social mechanisms. The utility of our model is demonstrated by a case study of the 2013 Stockholm riots. The model consists of (a) general local incentives that appeal to individual motives, but only lead to participation in riots when (b) the delicate local equilibrium is destabilized by an event that (c) makes riots appear justified, risk-free and thrilling. The advantage of this rationalistic model is that it shows why other people, in other places, would have reason to act in much the same way under similar circumstances.

  • Autonomy, democracy and solidarity : The defining principles of collaborative civil society housing and some mechanisms that may challenge them
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Urban Research and Practice. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1753-5069 .- 1753-5077. ; 13:4, s. 390-410
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This theoretical paper introduces a conceptual framework for empirical study and comparison of collaborative civil society housing (CSH). We suggest that CSH communities satisfy four criteria to a lesser or higher extent: (1) autonomy, (2) participatory democracy, (3) internal solidarity and (4) external solidarity. Drawing primarily on empirical examples from the scholarly literature on co-operative housing, we claim that all CSH communities face challenges that may lead to the erosion of these civil society criteria. We argue that such challenges are general social mechanisms that manifest themselves in various types of situations, for instance, when apartments are transferred or refurbished.
