  • Iconoclastic controversies exhibition : A visual sociology of statues and commemoration sites in the southern part of Cyprus
  • 2015
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The photographs, taken in the southern regions of Cyprus, investigate the monuments, landmarks and statues that are part of the everyday life of Greek Cypriots. “The statues are vehicles of communication. They are vehicles of ideology, of information. It’s the entire object that also becomes a medium”, explains the professor. These photographs analyse how statues and commemoration sites narrate and frame the Cyprus Problem, and how they in many cases contain references to the “Self” and the “Other” by presenting a heroic “self” to the “own” community, or by showing the suffering of the “self”. But the exhibition also investigates how some (exceptional) statues undermine this presentation of the “self” and offer a different narrative of the conflict, and the identities of the people involved. “The logics of war and conflict often makes us believe that there is a homogenous community that is identical. And that is part of the problem, actually, because it hides the diversity that is so important. Showing these internal differences is very important in dealing with conflicts like in the Cyprus Problem”, notes professor Carpentier. He continues: “the project shows how important and how traumatic the Cyprus Problem is. The Cyprus Problem scratched the Cyprus soul, it really went very deep. The statues are ways of dealing with that”.

  • Respublika! : A Cypriot community media arts festival
  • 2017
  • Konstnärligt arbeteabstract
    • Respublika! translates the principles of community media in creative practice, in order to reflect on media, democracy and its participatory component, to analyze the (de)centralization of power in contemporary societies, and to showcase art projects that use participatory mechanisms to produce art projects, working with, and empowering members of one or more communities. Respublika! is multi-sited and multi-genre. It aims to tap into the creative reservoirs of community media, civil society organizations and social collectives (and their members); but also of artists that are committed to the basic principles of participatory (community) communication.

  • Articulating participation and agonism : A case study on the agonistic re-articulations of the Cyprus Problem in the broadcasts of the community broadcaster MYCYradio
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Cyprus Review - A Journal of Social, Economic and Political Issues. - 1015-2881. ; 27:1, s. 129-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article starts with a discussion on the material and discursive components of conflicttransformation, arguing for the need to complement the dominance of material andpsychological approaches with a more discursive-cultural approach. This plea contextualisesthe analysis of a series of broadcasts of the Cypriot web community radio station, MYCYradio.Supported by the Mouffe’s (discourse-) theoretical conceptualisations of antagonism andagonism, the analysis focuses on the broadcasts of three MYCYradio shows. For each show, 10episodes, broadcast between September and November 2013 are analysed, using discoursetheoreticalanalysis. Through this analysis, four main re-articulations are identified in theMYCYradio shows: the overcoming/decentralising of the divide, the deconstruction of the self(and the enemy), the reconfiguration of time, and the elaboration of the cost of the conflict. The analysis shows that community media, despite the many different problems they face, have particular abilities to support agonistic discourses.

  • Reality Television's Construction of Ordinary People : Class-Based and Nonelitist Articulations of Ordinary People and Their Discursive Affordances
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: A Companion to Reality Television. - Hoboken : Wiley-Blackwell. - 9780470659274 ; , s. 345-366
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of ordinary people plays a key role the analytical reflections about the genre of reality TV, in all its diversity and hybridity, where this concept is used to capture the presence of this virtually ungraspable category of human subjects that features so dominantly in these reality TV practices. This article focuses on the concept of ordinary people itself, and analyze its discursive construction. Apart from investigating the nature of the articulations of ordinary people in reality TV, this chapter poses the question how the articulation of the concept of ordinary people contributes to a set of power struggles in reality TV and in society in general, which are focussed on the (de-)validation of ordinary people as relevant societal actors. Behind this question lurks the idea that reality TV is one of the many symbolic battlegrounds for the democratic struggle about the (increased) equality between societal classes, and between societal elites and non-elites. Through this analysis we can see the simultaneity of the articulations of ordinary people-as-lower-class and ordinary people-as-non-elite offering two sets of repertoires which are invoked, sometimes one after the other, sometimes together, cross-feeding each other, contradicting each other, strengthening each other, in order to give meaning to the signifier ordinary people.

  • Waves of media democratization: A brief history of contemporary participatory practices in the media sphere
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Convergence. - : SAGE Publications. - 1354-8565 .- 1748-7382. ; 19:3, s. 287-294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article aims to provide a more historically grounded approach to the relationship between communication and participation, by distinguishing different waves of media democratization. The article first discusses the concept of participation and some of its complexities, and then sketches a series of intense moments of participation in and through the media in (mainly the second half) the 20th and the 21st century. At the same time, care is taken not to organize a linear-historical narrative, keeping in mind that the history of the democratization of Western societies and their media spheres is characterized by a series of continuities and discontinuities, dead ends and sedimented practices. Despite these ever-present fluctuations, the article argues that we can still see that structures, cultural resources and subjective dispositions have over time been geared more towards participation and equality, also within the media sphere.
