  • Academic Publishing in Modern Society
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European Review. - : Cambridge University Press. - 1062-7987 .- 1474-0575.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyses academic publishing in modern society by means of a governance model focusing on three groups of governors: Regulators, Market Actors, and Professions. It demonstrates how these three groups have interacted and how this interaction has put pressure on faculty members to produce publications for top journals. It also points to the strong position of publishers, which leads to high profit margins. The article therefore also discusses different possible measures to change the publishing system.

  • The Emergence of the Business Network Approach
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Extending the Business Network Approach. - Basingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137537638 - 9781137537652 ; , s. 21-38
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Relationships between commercial actors have existed for thousands of years as highlighted by Hadjikhani and LaPlaca (2013) and Hadjikhani in the final chapter of this volume. However, research on relationships between business actors, often summarised under headings such as industrial marketing or B2B, has a more recent origin. In the words of Hadjikhani and LaPlaca (2013: 294), relationship research ‘existed in society but had little scientific identity or inquiry’. This is even truer for research on wider relationship systems, that is, business networks. However, as will be demonstrated in the present volume, the situation in the beginning of the twenty-first century is quite different. Research on business networks is lively and manifested by a large number of publications. A search for ‘business networks’ in the databases SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI and A&HCI for all years until 2015 (with the restriction that the journals publishing the papers should be classified in the Subject Category ‘Business & Economics’ in all 156 journals) resulted in 553 hits, with the first papers published in 1992. Publications then did not accelerate until the early twenty-first century with an all-time high in 2012 of 70 hits, and somewhat lower figures in the following years. However, it should be noted that the 2015 figures merely refer to the first part of the year (Fig. 2.1) and will increase.

  • Professional School Obsession : An Enduring Yet Shifting Rhetoric by U.S. Business Schools
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Learning & Education. - : Academy of Management. - 1537-260X .- 1944-9585. ; 20:3, s. 442-458
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past two decades, prompted in part by a series of corporate scandals, different views have been voiced about why US business schools have purportedly lost their original ambition to become professional schools and, thus, making “management” a “true” profession and how it could be restored. This paper puts these debates into a longer-term perspective, by showing that these claims have been present for more than a century. The paper examines the evolving rhetoric of the protagonists and their critics over five periods, each marked by different contexts, which shaped the ambitions of schools of business to be recognized as professional schools. These claims, the paper shows, had a common thread for over one hundred years, which was the recurring reference to other professional schools, namely those of medicine and law, and at times engineering, which had already achieved the coveted status when US business schools first originated. What we ultimately argue is that, given the rhetorical nature of these claims, suggestions that business schools lost their way or ought to return to some idealized past are largely futile. Future discussions should therefore focus on purpose and power rather than profession.

  • Corpus Linguistics in Sweden : Pioneers and their context
  • 2019
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This volume presents findings from research on the development of corpus linguistics in Sweden as a scientific innovation. It begins with a presentation of the early international development of corpus linguistics as well as the institutional and disciplinary conditions for research on the subject in Sweden, followed by accounts of the first generations of Swedish innovators. External funding and international development were important for these pioneers, alongside the fact that established professors in language departments seem to have been relatively open to the new ideas. The criticism levelled against corpus linguistics appears instead to have come mainly from departments of general linguistics. In the course of time, this negative attitude has diminished and corpora have become an almost indispensable tool in linguistic research. Developments in Sweden are placed in an international perspective by means of an analysis of the publication database SciVerse Scopus for 1970−1999. It shows a research field in two well-defined clusters: corpus builders and corpus users, the former often with a background in language studies, the latter evincing considerable representation of psychologists and scholars of cognitive science with an interest in language acquisition and language loss. Evidence of the significance of international developments for scientific innovation is provided by an analysis of the development of professional organizations on both sides of the Atlantic.

  • 2024. - 1
  • Ingår i: Internationalization in Higher Education and Research. - Cham : Springer Nature. - 9783031473340 ; , s. 203-218
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This is the final concluding chapter in an edited volume on internationalization of higher education and research. The chapter brings together the conclusions from the three earlier sections of the book. As for Perspectives, the chapter elaborates on definitions of internationalisation, role models and the role of rankings. In terms of Obstacles, it points to the significance of language, challenges of mobility and environmental concerns. Regarding Alternative Modes, the chapter discusses internationalisation at home, distance education and bransch campuses. Looking ahead, the chapter points out that internationalization of higher education and research is in flux not least as a result of political changes in the world towards more authoritarian and nationalistic leadership challenging openness and academic freedom.
