  • The Rök Runestone and the End of the World
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Futhark: International Journal of Runic Studies. - : Uppsala University. - 1892-0950 .- 2003-296X. ; 9–10, s. 7-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Rök runestone from central middle Sweden, dated to around 800 CE, is famous, among other things, for a supposed reference to the emperor Theodoric the Great. This study proposes instead that the inscription deals with an anxiety triggered by a son’s death and the fear of a new climate crisis similar to the catastrophic one after 536 CE. Combining perspectives and findings from semiotics, philology, archaeology, and history of religion, the study presents a completely new interpretation which follows a unified theme, showing how the monument can be understood in the socio-cultural and religious context of early Viking Age Scandinavia. The inscription consists, according to the proposed interpretation, of nine enigmatic questions. Five of the questions concern the sun, and four of them, it is argued, ask about issues related to the god Odin. A central finding is that there are relevant parallels to the inscription in early Scandinavian poetry, especially in the Eddic poem Vafþrúðnismál.

  • Seeing Like a Smuggler: Borders from Below
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The word smuggler often unleashes a simplified, negative image painted by the media and the authorities. Such state-centric perspectives hide many social, political and economic relations generated by smuggling. This book looks at the practice through the eyes of the smugglers, revealing how their work can be productive, subversive and deeply sociopolitical. By tracing the illegalised movement of people and goods across borders, Seeing Like a Smuggler shows smuggling as a contradiction within the nation-state system, and in a dialectical relation with the national order of things. It raises questions on how smuggling engages and unsettles the ethics, materialities, visualities, histories and the colonial power relations that form borders and bordering. Covering a wide spectrum of approaches from personal reflections and ethnographies to historical accounts, cultural analysis and visual essays, the book spans the globe from Colombia to Ethiopia, Singapore to Guatemala, Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, and from Kurdistan to Bangladesh, to show how people deal with global inequalities and the restrictions of poverty and immobility.

  • Russian Cosmism in Eugene Vodolazkin’s novel The Aviator
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Slovo : Journal of Slavic Languages and Literatures. - Uppsala : Uppsala universitet. - 0348-744X. ; 62, s. 25-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, I discuss the influence of Russian Cosmism on Eugene Vodolazkin’s 2016 novel The Aviator. The central philosophical issues associated with Russian Cosmism are immortality and resurrection of the human body, space exploration, the conservation of time and memory in the museum and the idea of universal kinship. All of these motifs are present, to some extent, in The Aviator. In the following analysis I focus on space travel. In The Aviator, space travel is deeply intertwined with the motifs of memory and resurrection, a combination which points backwards in the direction of Nikolai Fedorov, Pavel Florensky and Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, but also forward to contemporary visual artists, philosophers, writers and scientists. A cosmist reading of The Aviator makes comparisons relevant to several contemporary novels. This discussion uses Anna Starobinets’ The Living (2011) and Dmitry Glukhovsky’s Futu.re (2013) as material for comparison with The Aviator. A common thread for these three novels is the pessimism they reveal while developing the cosmist ideas.

  • The Negotiation of Urgency: Economies of Attention in an Italian Emergency Room
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Urgency in a hospital Emergency Room (ER) is not a self-evident state. Urgency is made, by establishing priorities, distributing attention and material resources, and deciding who and what needs to be attended to first – and, simultaneously, who and what has to wait. The process of determining urgency is known as “triage” (from the French verb, trier, “to choose”). This thesis is about the vicissitudes of triage in an Italian ER. Based on one year of ethnographic fieldwork, the thesis explores what happens when urgency is at stake; when it is contested and caught up between different, and frequently conflicting, perspectives. It explores how urgency is determined in practice, and shows how triage always is a vulnerable process of negotiation guided by economies of attention. How is urgency actually shaped in interactions between patients, their families and friends, and the ER staff? The different chapters explore how time in the ER is created through shifting registers of attention, and how attention in the ER is affected by widespread economic and social precarity, and neoliberal national policies of governance. It discusses how triage increasingly is structured by attitudes of mistrust; and also by potential or real outbreaks of violence. Addressing the particular positioning of the ER as a thick space of conjunction between neoliberal state politics and people's increasing need for care and recognition, the thesis aims to contribute to medical anthropology literature by analyzing triage not as a neutral medical way of sorting, but as a practice that actively creates difference. It explores both the limits of triage, and how those limits can spark improvisation and creative reinvention.
