  • The Politics of Borders in the Emergence of Modern Swedish Craft
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Modern Craft. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1749-6772 .- 1749-6780. ; 12:1, s. 13-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nation states have been imagined and constructed by defining certain identities and practices. Among cultural and economic practices bound to material culture, craft has played a significant role in the processes of imagining communities and consequently nationalities in modern times. These imaginations were produced and sustained by various discursive and materialized borders that were based on simultaneous practices of inclusion and exclusion, targeting certain bodies within the formation of a nation state. In this article, we discuss instances of such bordering in Sweden, by looking at specific state documents of controlling the movement and residence of those who were seen as suspicious and potentially threatening. Among these individuals were craftspeople with religious and/or ethnic backgrounds different than the imagined modern Swedish subjects. They were often represented as a threat to the economic, social, and cultural prosperity of the Swedish nation state. These individuals and groups, and their craft practices, were variously appropriated, erased, included, and excluded by the nation state. This article argues that an understanding of modern Swedish craft is impossible without recognizing the crafts that were excluded from its emergence, articulation, and sustainment over the last hundred years. This is to argue that an understanding of the politics of craft requires recognition of the borders that regulate how—and by whom—craft can be practiced.

  • "Can't seem to live without it somehow" : An interview with Eddy Harris
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Studies in Travel Writing. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1364-5145 .- 1755-7550. ; 18:3, s. 279-294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In his books about Paris and Harlem and his travelogues about journeys in Africa and the American South, African-American author Eddy L. Harris explores what it means to be Black in the present moment in history. In this interview, he talks to Nicklas Hållén about his need to travel, the craft of travel writing and his plans for a movie project about a journey down the Mississippi River. The conversation revolves particularly around his travelogue Native Stranger: A Blackamerican's Journey into the Heart of Africa (1992) and the way in which identity conditions (and does not condition) travel and travel writing, and the functions that travel writing may have for the author as well as reader. The interview was conducted in the summer of 2013 at a café in the village of Pranzac in the Charente department of France, where Harris currently lives and works.

  • “You want people to see you in all your nuanced variety” : An Interview with Noo Saro-Wiwa
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Studies in Travel Writing. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1364-5145 .- 1755-7550. ; 19:3, s. 274-282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Born in Nigeria in 1976, Noo Saro-Wiwa grew up in the UK. In 2008 she took a trip around the country of her birth. The journey resulted in her first book, Looking for Transwonderland: Travels in Nigeria (Granta, 2012). It was selected as BBC Radio 4's Book of the Week and the Sunday Times Travel Book of the Year in 2012. In this interview with Nicklas Hållén and Janet Remmington, Saro-Wiwa covers a range of topics and reflections, including (trans)national identities, readership and reception, the legacy of her father, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and the craft of travel writing. The interview incorporates questions and answers from two occasions: a face-to-face meeting in London in May 2014 and an audience-facing discussion at the University of York's “African Intellectual Mobilities” colloquium in February 2015.

  • Runstenarna i landskapet : En undersökning om placeringen av runstenarna i Tiohärad
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Futhark. - Oslo, Uppsala: Uppsala universitet. - 1892-0950 .- 1892-0950. ; :5, s. 137-149
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To comprehend better the meaning of a runic monument as a complex phenomenon it is necessary to have knowledge of its original location in relation to the surrounding environment. Our knowledge of such initial locations varies. Some runestones still stand in the place where they were first erected. In other cases, the first placement is well documented even if the runestone has been moved or indeed lost; sometimes, however, the documentation indicates only a general placement. In several instances the original location is wholly unknown. There are eighty-two known runic monuments from the late Viking Age in an area called Tiohärad in southern Sweden. For twenty-nine of these only a secondary location, mostly in or near a church, is known. Some mention bridges and eleven are known to have been located near a passage of water (which presumably also indicates the presence of a road). At least sixteen more are found near a later road, and two of these mention a crossroad. Thirteen seem to have been found near farms or villages. In many cases, the monuments could have marked ancient boundaries. Of particular interest in these instances are the examples located at boundaries that not only border two farms, but also larger administrative areas. Of the fifty-two monuments with a known location, only eighteen have any connection to grave-fields.

  • A Visual History of HIV/AIDS : Exploring the Face of AIDS Film Archive
  • 2019
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Face of AIDS film archive at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, consists of more than 700 hours of unedited and edited footage, shot over a period of more than thirty years and all over the world by filmmaker and journalist Staffan Hildebrand. The material documents the HIV/AIDS pandemic and includes scenes from conferences and rallies, and interviews with activists, physicians, people with the infection, and researchers. It represents a global historical development from the early years of the AIDS crisis to a situation in which it is possible to live a normal life with the HIV virus. This volume brings together a range of academic perspectives – from media and film studies, medical history, gender studies, history, and cultural studies – to bear on the archive, shedding light on memories, discourses, trauma, and activism.Using a medical humanities framework, the editors explore the influence of historical representations of HIV/AIDS and stigma in a world where antiretroviral treatment has fundamentally altered the conditions under which many people diagnosed with HIV live. Organized into four sections, this book begins by introducing the archive and its role, setting it in a global context. The first part looks at methodological, legal and ethical issues around archiving memories of the present which are then used to construct histories of the past; something that can be particularly controversial when dealing with a socially stigmatized epidemic such as HIV/AIDS. The second section is devoted to analyses of particular films from the archive, looking at the portrayal of people living with HIV/AIDS, the narrative of HIV as a chronic illness and the contemporary context of particular films. The third section looks at how stigma and trauma are negotiated in the material in the Face of AIDS film archive, discussing ideas about suffering and culpability. The final section contributes perspectives on and by the filmmaker as activist and auteur. This interdisciplinary collection is placed at the intersection of medical humanities, sexuality studies and film and media studies, continuing a tradition of studies on the cultural and social understandings of HIV/AIDS.
