  • What is the word for 'Engineering' in Swedish : Swedish students conceptions of their discipline
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • Engineering education in Sweden – as in the rest of the world – is experiencing a decline in student interest. There are concerns about the ways in which students think about engineering education, why they join an academic programme in engineering, and why they persist in their studies. In this context the aims of the Nationellt ämnesdidaktiskt Centrum för Teknikutbildning i Studenternas Sammanhang project (CeTUSS) is to investigate the student experience and to identify and support a continuing network of interested researchers, as well as in building capacity for disciplinary pedagogic investigation. The Stepping Stones project brings together these interests in a multi-researcher, multi-institutional study that investigates how tudents and academic staff perceive engineering in Sweden and in Swedish education. The first results of that project are reported here. As this study is situated uniquely in Swedish education, it allows for exploration of “a Swedish perspective” on conceptions of engineering. The Stepping Stones project was based on a model of research capacity-building previously instantiated in the USA and Australia (Fincher & Tenenberg, 2006).

  • Agility Across Time and Space : Implementing Agile Methods in Global Software Projects
  • 2010
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • Rather than deciding whether or not to get involved in global sourcing, many companies are facing decisions about whether or not to apply agile methods in their distributed projects. These companies are often motivated by the opportunities to solve the coordination and communication difficulties associated with global software development. Yet while agile principles prescribe close interaction and co-location, the very nature of distributed software development does not support these prerequisites. Šmite, Moe, and Ågerfalk structured the book into five parts. In "Motivation" the editors introduce the fundamentals of agile distributed software development and explain the rationale behind the application of agile practices in globally distributed software projects. "Transition" describes implementation strategies, adoption of particular agile practices for distributed projects, and general concepts of agility. "Management" details practical implications for project planning, time management, and customer and subcontractor interaction. "Teams" discusses agile distributed team configuration, effective communication and knowledge transfer, and allocation of roles and responsibilities. Finally, in the "Epilogue" the editors summarize all contributions and present future trends for research and practice in agile distributed development. This book is primarily targeted at researchers, lecturers, and students in empirical software engineering, and at practitioners involved in globally distributed software projects. The contributions are based on sound empirical research and identify gaps and commonalities in both the existing state of the art and state of the practice. In addition, they also offer practical advice through many hints, checklists, and experience reports. Questions answered in this book include: What should companies expect from merging agile and distributed strategies? What are the stumbling blocks that prevent companies from realizing the benefits of the agile approach in distributed environments, and how can we recognize infeasible strategies and unfavorable circumstances? What helps managers cope with the challenges of implementing agile approaches in distributed software development projects? How can distributed teams survive the decisions taken by management and become efficient through the application of agile approaches?

  • Evaluation of Quality of Life/Life Satisfaction in Women with Breast Cancer in Complementary and Conventional Care
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - Taylor & Francis. - 0284-186X. ; 43:1, s. 27-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim was to study the perceived quality of life/life satisfaction in a sample of women with breast cancer who were treated in a hospital with alternative/complementary care and the same variables in individually matched patients who received only conventional medical treatment. A non-randomized controlled trial design with repeated measurements was used. Sixty women with breast cancer treated with anthroposophic medicine (ABCW) and 60 with conventional medicine (CBCW) were included and 36 matched pairs took part on all occasions. The quality of life was measured by the EORTC QLQ-C30 and the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire (LSQ). The comparisons were calculated as effect sizes (ES). The women in the ABCW group reported small or moderate effects, expressed as ES, on their quality of life/life satisfaction compared to their matched "twins" in the CBCW group at the 1-year follow-up in 15 out of 21 scales/factors. It was concluded that the women who had chosen anthroposophic care increased their perceived quality of life/life satisfaction according to the methodology of the study.

  • Perceived quality of life and coping for Swedish women with breast cancer who choose complementary medicine.
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Cancer Nursing. - 0162-220X. ; 24, s. 395-401
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study, which is part of a major clinical controlled study of the life situation of women with breast cancer, was to compare two groups of women concerning perceived quality of life and coping. The women were treated in two different cancer treatment programs: complementary treatment, which included anthroposophic therapy, and conventional cancer treatment. A total of 120 women were included, 60 women treated with anthroposophic medicine, and 60 individually matched women treated with conventional medicine only. Quality of life was measured by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, Quality of Life Questionnaire, Core 30, and the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire. Coping was measured by the Mental Adjustment to Cancer scale. The results showed that the women who chose anthroposophic therapy perceived their quality of life to be lower on admission to the hospital and showed more anxious preoccupation than the women in conventional medicine. It can be concluded that, due to the careful matching procedure, the women in the two groups are comparable in a medical sense but not from the perspective of quality of life and coping.

  • An ethnographic study of a day care center for Iranian immigrant seniors
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Western Journal of Nursing Research. - THOUSAND OAKS : SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC. - 0193-9459. ; 22:2, s. 169-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Late-in-life immigrants are often at risk for psychological stress and social isolation because of language problems, small social networks, and cultural differences from the host society. Community intervention programs can reduce such stress and isolation. In this article, the authors describe a Swedish municipality's culturally appropriate intervention program for elderly Iranian immigrants based on ethnographic data gathered during a 12 month period The description includes the activities provided by the program and the experiences of the elderly Iranian immigrants who participate regularly in these activities. The findings document the positive impact of regular participation in the center's activities on the elders' well-being and health.

  • Morphing Into New Modes of Writing : John Cayley's riverIsland
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Leonardo Electronic Almanac. - Cambridge, MA : MIT Press. - 1071-4391. ; 14:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Toward a Concept of Post-Postmodernism or Lady Gaga’s Reconfigurations of Madonna
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Reconstruction : Studies in Contemporary Culture. - Reconstruction. - 1547-4348. ; 12:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How can we describe the landscape of what is increasingly referred to as post-postmodernism? Is post-postmodernism but a revision (however significant) of postmodernism or is it a new, perhaps even original, episteme? As must be clear from the title, the article takes Ihab Hassan‘s much discussed essay “Toward a Concept of Postmodernism” as its point of departure, but proposes a double revision of his chart. First, it supplements the chart with a set of concepts used to designate post-postmodernism. Second, it provides a re-vision of the very layout of the chart, arguing with Johanna Drucker that form is constitutive of information rather than its transparent presentation. The reference to the Madonna - Lady Gaga relationship in the essay‘s subtitle signals that the seismic shift—if that is what it is—that we endeavor to map is palpable in popular culture as much as in critical and theoretical discourses. Whether we find ourselves at the point of unfolding or at the peak of this new épistémè, it is indisputable that the broad cultural and societal changes of the past two decades are related to digital media. Taking our cue from Lady Gaga‘s performances, we suggest that two distinct features of contemporary culture, access and excess, be seen as interlinked characteristics of the post-postmodern.

  • Conservation laws for the Maxwell-Dirac equations with dual Ohm's law
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Mathematical Physics. - MELVILLE : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0022-2488. ; 48:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a general theorem on conservation laws for arbitrary differential equations proved by Ibragimov [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 333, 311-320 (2007)], we have derived conservation laws for Dirac's symmetrized Maxwell-Lorentz equations under the assumption that both the electric and magnetic charges obey linear conductivity laws (dual Ohm's law). We find that this linear system allows for conservation laws which are nonlocal in time. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.
