  • Nanoparticle based and sputtered WS2 low-friction coatings : differences and similarities with respect to friction mechanisms and tribofilm formation

    • MoS2 and WS2 are widely known intrinsic low-friction materials that have been extensively used and thoroughly investigated in literature. They are commonly produced in the form of sputtered coatings and show extremely low friction coefficients in non-humid environments, but rapidly degrade in humid conditions. Close nested fullerene-like nanoparticles of these materials have been proposed to have better oxidation resistance due to their closed form with the absence of dangling bonds. In the present study, an electrochemically deposited coating consisting of fullerene-like nanoparticles of WS2 embedded in a Ni-P matrix is tested under various loads and humidity conditions and compared with a sputtered WS2 coating with respect to their tribological behavior. The formation of a tribofilm on both surfaces is known to be crucial for the low-friction mechanism of WS2 and the different mechanisms behind this formation for the two types of coatings are investigated. It is shown that despite the completely different transformation processes, the resulting tribofilms are very similar. This is analyzed thoroughly using SEM, AES and TEM. The friction coefficient is known to be lower at higher normal loads for these materials and in the present study the mechanical and chemical responses of the tribofilm to higher normal loads during sliding are investigated. It was observed that the basal planes become aligned more parallel to the surface at higher loads, and that the tribofilm is less oxidized. It is suggested that these mechanisms are connected and are crucial keys to the wear life of these materials. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Influence of binder metal on wear initiation of cemented carbides in sliding contact with granite

    • Drill bits equipped with WC-Co cemented carbide buttons offer great performance in many rock drilling applications. Generally, the wear of these buttons against the rock is gradual and moderate, or even slow depending on the rock conditions. However, the Co binder has recently been found to cause health issues and an alternative binder, which does not compromise the performance of the cemented carbide, is needed. In the present work, the performance of WC-Fe and WC-Ni is investigated and compared to the common WC-Co in a sliding test against granite.The results show immediate scrape-off of granite against protruding WC grain edges. Some WC grains crack and fragments are subsequently removed, adding up to loss of entire WC grains. A nanoscale pattern gradually evolves on other WC grains, implying also nanoscale wear. Both WC-Fe and WC-Ni show significantly faster wear initiation and early propagation compared to WC-Co, although the wear characteristics are similar.

    • Cemented carbides are the most common cutting tools for machining various grades of steels. In this study, wear behavior of two different cemented carbide grades with roughly the same fraction of binder phase and carbide phase but different grain size, in turning austenitic stainless steel is investigated. Wear tests were carried out against 316L stainless steel at 180 and 250 m/mincutting speeds. The worn surface of cutting tool is characterized using high resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and 3D optical profiler.The wear of cemented carbide in turning stainless steel is controlled by both chemical and mechanical wear. Plastic deformation, grain fracture and chemical wear is observed on flank and rake face of the cutting insert. In the case of fine-grained, the WC grains has higher surface contact with the adhered material which promotes higher chemical reaction and degradation of WC grains, so chemical wear resistance of the composites is larger when WC grains are larger. The hardness of cemented carbide increase linearly by decreasing grain size, therefore mechanical wear resistance of the composites is larger when WC grains are smaller.

    • High efficacy LED lamps combined with adaptive lighting control and greenhouse integrated photovoltaics (PV) could enable the concept of year-round cultivation. This concept can be especially useful for increasing the production in the Nordic countries of crops like herbaceous perennials, forest seedlings, and other potted plants not native of the region, which are grown more than one season in this harsh climate. Meteorological satellite data of this region was analyzed in a parametric study to evaluate the potential of these technologies. The generated maps showed monthly average temperatures fluctuating from −20 °C to 20 °C throughout the year. The natural photoperiod and light intensity also changed drastically, resulting in monthly average daily light integral (DLI) levels ranging from 45–50 mol·m−2·d−1 in summer and contrasting with 0–5 mol·m−2·d−1 during winter. To compensate, growth room cultivation that is independent of outdoor conditions could be used in winter. Depending on the efficacy of the lamps, the electricity required for sole-source lighting at an intensity of 300 µmol·m−2·s−1 for 16 h would be between 1.4 and 2.4 kWh·m−2·d−1. Greenhouses with supplementary lighting could help start the cultivation earlier in spring and extend it further into autumn. The energy required for lighting highly depends on several factors such as the natural light transmittance, the light threshold settings, and the lighting control protocol, resulting in electric demands between 0.6 and 2.4 kWh·m−2·d−1. Integrating PV on the roof or wall structures of the greenhouse could offset some of this electricity, with specific energy yields ranging from 400 to 1120 kWh·kW−1·yr−1 depending on the region and system design.

    • High-Performance Marine Craft (HPMC) occupants are currently being investigated for various psychophysical impairments degrading work performance postulating that these deteriorations are related to their occupational exposures. However, scientific evidence for this is lacking and the association of exposure conditions aboard HPMC with adverse health and performance effects is unknown. Therefore, the study estimates the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain (MSP) among HPMC occupants and the association of their work exposure with MSP and performance degradation. It also presents a criterion for evaluating the self-reported exposure severity aboard three different types of mono-hull HPMC; displacement, semi-displacement and planing, on a par with the available standard criteria for objectively measurable exposures. Furthermore, another criterion is proposed to assess the performance-degradation of HPMC occupants based on self-reported fatigue symptoms and MSP. Swedish Coast Guard HPMC occupants were surveyed for MSP, fatigue symptoms as well as for work-related and individual risk indicators using a validated web-based questionnaire. Prevalence of MSP and performance-degradation during the past 12 months were assessed and presented as a percentage of the sample. Associations of exposure conditions aboard HPMC with MSP and performance-capacity were systematically evaluated using multiple logistic regression models and expressed as odds ratio (OR). Prevalence of MSP was 72% among which lower back pain was the most prevalent (46%) followed by neck pain (29%) and shoulder pain (23%) while 29% with degraded performance. Exposure to severe conditions aboard semi-displacement craft was associated with lower back (OR = 2.3) and shoulder (OR = 2.6) pain while severe conditions aboard planing craft with neck pain (OR = 2.3) and performance-degradation (OR = 2.6). MSP is common among Swedish coast guards. Severe exposure conditions aboard HPMC are significantly associated with both MSP and performance-degradation. The spine and shoulders are the most susceptible to work-related MSP among HPMC occupants which should be targeted in work-related preventive and corrective measures.

  • Impact of stroke on anterior-posterior force generation prior to seat-off during sit-to-walk

    • Force generation during sit-to-walk (STW) post-stroke is a poorly studied area, although STW is a common daily transfer giving rise to a risk of falling in persons with disability. The purpose of this study was to describe and compare strategies for anterior-posterior (AP) force generation prior to seat-off during the STW transfer in both subjects with stroke and in matched controls. During STW at self-selected speed, AP force data were collected by 4 force plates, beneath the buttocks and feet from eight subjects with stroke '(>6 months after onset) and 8 matched controls. Subjects with post-stroke hemiparesis and matched controls generated a similar magnitude of total AP force impulses (F-1.71 = 0.67; p = 0.42) beneath buttocks and feet prior to seat-off during STW. However, there were significant group differences in AP force impulse generation beneath the stance buttock (i.e. the non-paretic buttock in the stroke group), with longer duration (F-1.71 = 8.78; p <0.005), larger net AP impulse (F-1.71 = 6.76; p < 0.05) and larger braking impulse (F-1.71 = 7.24; p <0.05) in the stroke group. The total braking impulse beneath buttocks and feet was about 4.5 times larger in the stroke group than in the control group (F-1.71 = 8.84; p < 0.005). An intra-and inter-limb dys-coordination with substantial use of braking impulses was demonstrated in the stroke group. This motor strategy differed markedly from the smooth force interaction in the control group. These results might be important in the development of treatment models related to locomotion post-stroke.

    • A new test method based on multi-pass scratch testing has been developed for evaluating the mechanical and tribological properties of thin, hard coatings. The proposed test method uses a pin-on-disc tribometer and during testing a Rockwell C diamond stylus is used as the “pin” and loaded against the rotating coated sample. The influence of normal load on the number of cycles to coating damage is investigated and the resulting coating damage mechanisms are evaluated by post-test scanning electron microscopy. The present study presents the test method by evaluating the performance of Ti0.86Si0.14N, Ti0.34Al0.66N and (Al0.7Cr0.3)2O3 coatings deposited by cathodic arc evaporation on cemented carbide inserts. The results show that the test method is quick, simple and reproducible and can preferably be used to obtain relevant data concerning the fatigue, wear, chipping and spalling characteristics of different coating-substrate composites. Also, the small size of the test region (the radius of the circular scratch track can be as small as 0.5 mm) makes it possible to perform tests within small restricted areas. Consequently, the test method can be used as a virtually non-destructive test and e.g. be used to evaluate the fatigue and wear resistance as well as the cohesive and adhesive interfacial strength of coated cemented carbide inserts prior to cutting tests.

    • The influence of surface defects, i.e. droplets and craters, on the mechanical and tribological properties of arc-evaporated VxN coatings deposited on cemented carbide has been investigated in a scratching contact using a diamond stylus and a sliding contact using a stainless steel pin. Post-test characterisation using 3D optical surface profilometry and scanning electron microscopy was performed in order to investigate the mechanical and tribological response of the coatings. The results show that scratch induced coating cracking mainly is restricted to larger droplets showing a low interfacial bonding to the adjacent coating matrix. The influence of coating defects on the cohesive strength, i.e. the tendency to chipping of small coating fragments, was found to be relatively small. In contrast, the presence of defects may have a significant impact on the interfacial adhesive strength, increasing the tendency to spalling. In sliding contact, surface defects such as droplets and craters have a strong impact on the tribological behaviour of the coatings causing abrasive wear of the less hard counter material surface and material transfer to the coating, both mechanisms affecting the friction characteristics of sliding contact tribo system.

  • Exploring the tribochemical wear and material transfer caused by Cu15Zn alloys on shearing tools

    • Cemented carbide tools are extensively used in the zipper industry, including shearing of a pre-formed Cu15Zn wire into individual zipper elements. Although the work material is significantly softer than the tool, wear is the life limiting factor for the tools and is considered to be of tribochemical nature. So far it has not been explained, however, it is known that the wear rate of uncoated, as well as CrC and CrN coated, cemented carbide increases dramatically when Zn is omitted from the Cu alloy. In this paper, worn tool surfaces, including any transferred material, were studied to investigate the tribochemical wear mechanism in detail. Material transfer occurred onto all tool surfaces. Cu and Zn were separated on the sub-micron scale, and preferential transfer of one of the constituents was observed. This is reflected in the outermost surface of the sheared element, which shows a homogeneous composition elsewhere. Oxidation was observed of all tool surfaces, which indicates elements of oxidative wear. Further, any Zn transferred to the tool surfaces was oxidized. Thus, it is suggested that the presence of Zn reduces the oxygen available and consequently reduces the oxidation rate of the tool surfaces, leading to the protective effect previously observed. © 2024 The Authors
