  • Effects of Visualizing Missing Data : An Empirical Evaluation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 18th International Conference on Information Visualisation (IV). - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781479941032 ; , s. 132-138
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an empirical study that evaluates the effects of visualizing missing data on decision-making tasks. A comparison between three visualization techniques: (1) emptiness, (2) fuzziness, and (3) emptiness plus explanation, revealed that the latter technique induced significantly higher degree of decision-confidence than the visualization technique fuzziness. Moreover, emptiness plus explanation yield the highest number of risky choices of the three. This result suggests that uncertainty visualization techniques affect the decision-maker and the decisionconfidence. Additionally, the results indicate a possible relation between the degree of decision-confidence and the decision-maker's displayed risk behavior.

  • Responses of bryophytes to simulated environmental change at Latnjajaure, northern Sweden
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bryology. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0373-6687 .- 1743-2820. ; 25:3, s. 163-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We simulated a predicted environmental change in a subarctic-alpine plant community to study short-term growth in Hylocomium splendens, and three-year effects in abundance changes of the five most common bryophytes at Latnjajaure, northern Sweden. The experiment had a factorial design with increased temperature and nutrients, alone and in combination. Moss growth was measured during the 1995 growing season, and we measured species abundance before and after three years of environmental perturbation. The combined treatments of fertilizer and temperature enhancement caused a decreased growth in length and dry weight in H. splendens. There was a significant decrease in abundance of Rhytidium rugosum in the combined temperature and fertilizer treatment. The other four common bryophyte species (Aulacomnium turgidum, Dicranum groenlandicum, Hylocomium splendens, and Ptilidium ciliare) showed weaker, but not significant trends in the same direction. As the bryophytes are an important component of arctic and subarctic vegetation, we expect that they will play a key role in the impact of anticipated Global Change on the ecosystems.

  • On the selection of relevant historical demand data for revenue management applied to transportation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Revenue and Pricing Management. - : Springer. - 1476-6930 .- 1477-657X. ; 22:4, s. 266-275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The success of revenue management models depends to a large extent on the quality of historical data used to forecast future bookings. Several theoretical models and best practices of handing historical data have been developed over the years, that all rely on assumptions about underlying distribution and seasonality in the historical data. In this paper, we describe a novel method that compares the fingerprints of the departure to optimise and selects historical departures without making assumptions on data distribution or seasonality. By evaluating the method at the departure level and using the Nemenyi rank test, we show the method’s application in the ferry transportation business and discuss its advantages.

  • Multi-objective optimization of material model parameters of an adhesive layer by using SPEA2
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Advances in structural and multidisciplinary optimization. - : The International Society for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (ISSMO). - 9780646943947 ; , s. 249-254
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The usage of multi material structures in industry, especially in the automotive industry are increasing. To overcome the difficulties in joining these structures, adhesives have several benefits over traditional joining methods. Therefore, accurate simulations of the entire process of fracture including the adhesive layer is crucial. In this paper, material parameters of a previously developed meso mechanical finite element (FE) model of a thin adhesive layer are optimized using the Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm (SPEA2). Objective functions are defined as the error between experimental data and simulation data. The experimental data is provided by previously performed experiments where an adhesive layer was loaded in monotonically increasing peel and shear. Two objective functions are dependent on 9 model parameters (decision variables) in total and are evaluated by running two FEsimulations, one is loading the adhesive layer in peel and the other in shear. The original study converted the two objective functions into one function that resulted in one optimal solution. In this study, however, a Pareto frontis obtained by employing the SPEA2 algorithm. Thus, more insight into the material model, objective functions, optimal solutions and decision space is acquired using the Pareto front. We compare the results and show good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Empowering health care professionals by IS education : Enhancing reflective empowerment
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 18th European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) 2010. - 9780620471725
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents findings from a research study of an information systems master program in Sweden, targeting healthcare professionals. The aim of the study was to explore if and how mechanisms of empowerment and reflective practice can be evoked in healthcare professionals by participating in a master program in information systems. A mixed research methodology was applied, including participant observation, document analysis and a learning style inventory. The findings of the study showed signs of the students achieving a higher degree of empowerment in their professional roles, as well as beginning to actively use reflective practice as a means of professional development. The findings are summarised in a tentative framework of reflective empowerment. The findings call for further research on how IT-centred master programs targeting healthcare professional could enhance professional development.

  • Adopting proactive knowledge use as an innovation : The case of a knowledge management system in rheumatology
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) 2009. - 9780615335032 ; , s. 96-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study is to present a tentative framework to explore and investigate the drivers and barriers of adoption of the innovation of proactive knowledge use in connection to a knowledge management system (KMS) in health care. Semi-structured interviews were performed with champion implementers and physicians using the KMS along with a document analysis depicting significant events of the implementation process. The findings from the study suggested that drivers of the innovation were the characteristics of change agents, quality improvement, budget control and knowledge brought to the physician-patient dialogue by the KMS. In particular, there were indications of the KMS facilitating the process of making tacit knowledge explicit in the physician-patient dialogue. Identified barriers towards the innovation were resistance from clinical management, lack of motivation to share knowledge, lack of time and perceived flaws in the interface and compilation of data in the KMS.

  • User Acceptance of Virtual Learning Environments : A Case Study from Three Northern European Universities
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - Berkeley : The Berkeley Electronic Press. - 1529-3181 .- 1529-3181. ; 25:1, s. 465-486
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Virtual learning environments have in recent years become an important tool in higher education, in distance learning as well as on campus. This study analyzes factors influencing acceptance of virtual learning environments among academic staff and students in blended learning environments. Two research questions guided the study: (1) How do organizational and individual factors influence the acceptance of virtual learning environments among academic staff and students? (2) What are the implications for practice in order to create good prerequisites for acceptance of virtual learning environments? The study was performed as a comparative, explanatory case study at three universities providing master education of public health in Sweden, Norway and Lithuania. The findings of the case study showed that the contextual factor of culture was powerful in influencing acceptance of virtual learning environments, positively as well as negatively. High degrees of performance expectancy, results demonstrability and social influence affected acceptance of virtual learning environments positively. The degree of social influence was hypothesized to be transferred by the contextual factor of culture. The organizational culture of universities, expressed as shared values of what is good quality teaching and learning, were found to partly oppose values inherent in the virtual learning environment. Implications for practice are put forward, emphasizing culture as an important factor to consider in the implementation of virtual learning environments.

  • Rolling cargo management using a deep reinforcement learning approach
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Logistics. - : MDPI. - 2305-6290. ; 5:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Loading and unloading rolling cargo in roll-on/roll-off are important and very recurrent operations in maritime logistics. In this paper, we apply state-of-the-art deep reinforcement learning algorithms to automate these operations in a complex and real environment. The objective is to teach an autonomous tug master to manage rolling cargo and perform loading and unloading operations while avoiding collisions with static and dynamic obstacles along the way. The artificial intelligence agent, representing the tug master, is trained and evaluated in a challenging environment based on the Unity3D learning framework, called the ML-Agents, and using proximal policy optimization. The agent is equipped with sensors for obstacle detection and is provided with real-time feedback from the environment thanks to its own reward function, allowing it to dynamically adapt its policies and navigation strategy. The performance evaluation shows that by choosing appropriate hyperparameters, the agents can successfully learn all required operations including lane-following, obstacle avoidance, and rolling cargo placement. This study also demonstrates the potential of intelligent autonomous systems to improve the performance and service quality of maritime transport.
