- The objective of this study is to portray the illness-related threats experienced by parents of children after the diagnosis of central nervous system (CNS) tumor. Parents were asked to rate the extent to which they experienced a set of specific fears related to their child's brain tumor and its treatment. Outcomes for parents of CNS tumor patients (n = 82) were compared with those of reference parents of patients treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (n = 208). The fears about an illness recurrence and the late effects of treatment were most prominent among parents of CNS tumor patients. For 7 out of 11 kinds of fear, parents of CNS tumor patients expressed a stronger fear than the reference group. More than a quarter of the parents of children treated for CNS tumors feared a complete decline of the child. Parents of CNS tumor patients experience relatively heightened cancer related fears in several domains. The fear of devastating consequences felt by one fourth of parents signals the need of individualized psychological support and information at diagnosis and follow-up to facilitate parental coping with the posttreatment situation.

- In 2007 the Swedish government decided to put resources in a project that offered active teachers to develop disciplinary and pedagogical competence through doctoral studies. Among ten others the Royal College of Music in Stockholm succeeded with their application and got the chance to educate 10 music teachers from the compulsory school towards a “half” PhD exam, that is called a Licentiate exam in Sweden. The teachers come from all of Sweden and are registered at one of five participating higher music education institutions. At the same time they work for 20 % in their ordinary schools. The common education is organized as courses and in virtual meeting rooms of different kinds. The motive for that is that the teachers are participating in several communities of practice at the same time, aiming to develop as researching practicing teachers in a broad way. In a developing research project the growing of the teachers – eg identity development and professional learning - is followed, guided by the following questions: What becomes the task for higher education when the teachers are taking part in a PhD education at the same time as they work, and are expected to go back to their ordinary work in schools? How can a research school be organized in as a developing learning system where individual experiences have possibility to be shared by others? What are the possibilities for good learning and identity development, and which are the challenges? How can learning trajectories between the research school, the research communities and the everyday practice seen as communities of practice, be encouraged? What authentic questions are engaging the teachers and how do they develop in the social interplay? The methods used are teachers’ continually encouraged written reflections and documented group discussions.

A mobile application for early labour support -feasibility pilot study

- Background: Use of mobile applications (apps) Use of mobile applications (apps) are increasing during pregnancy but few of these are evidence-based or evaluated in research.Aim: To examine the feasibility, including perceived usefulness and usability, and the preliminary effects of an app based on the Confident birth method.Methods: A mixed-method approach, including 48 women, was used to evaluate acceptability, usability and to test study design and procedures. iPhone-users (n = 24) tested the app during pregnancy while the remaining (n = 24) formed a control group. Background characteristics and outcome measurements were collected from all women at baseline. Women in the app group received two follow-up phone calls from a midwife concerning usefulness and ease of use of the app. A follow-up questionnaire after birth were used to measure preliminary effects of the intervention as well as system usability of the app.Results: Women using the app found the app exercises simple, understandable, and useful. System usability score showed a mean score of 85.3 indicating excellent system usability. Notes from phone calls resulted in four categories: positive feedback about the app, negative feedback about the app, partners involvement, and knowledge. Preliminary effects of labour experience showed no significant differences between the two groups, in terms of early labour or childbirth experience.Conclusion: The app tested in this feasibility study, was perceived as useful and appreciated by women. Areas for improvement of the app were identified. The result shows promise for further efficacy testing in a forthcoming randomised controlled trial.

A Preliminary Model for Assessing University Sustainability from the Student Perspective

- This paper assesses university sustainability from the perspective of the interested student. A set of questions for a university website analysis is proposed and preliminary results for Swedish universities are presented. The university website analysis intends to emulate a student looking for a university working with sustainable development. University ranking is compared with the results from the sustainability assessment. Results from the study are based on university website analysis of 18 Swedish universities out of a total of 30. Universities are grouped in high ranked, low ranked and benchmark universities. For the majority of the studied universities it was possible to extract the information needed for a sustainability assessment from the website, which indicates that further development of the method is of interest. The average level of performance in the assessment was found to be less than 50% of the maximum of the proposed scale. With Sweden generally being a leading nation in sustainable development the results are below of what could be expected. Ranking, based on the Swedish ranking system does not seem to predict university sustainability performance. The indication is that Gothenburg University, while having further improvement potential, could be considered a benchmark in the Swedish context.

- PurposeSustainability can be assessed in the dimensions Profit, Planet and People. A problem with the approach is that these dimensions cannot be added. Another problem is that performance seldom is related to global system boundaries. The purpose of this paper is to study the “what” of sustainability by linking this to global boundaries and proposing “how” the authors could manage change toward sustainability.Design/methodology/approachSustainability definitions are reviewed to identify main stakeholders. People value defined as utility is compared to Planet harm as carbon emissions and People harm as prices of products. This approach is examined in business studying the global processes of housing, transporting, providing food and cement manufacturing.FindingsThe relative indicators with focus on People utility compare to Planet and People harm seem to be relevant for measuring the level of sustainability. The Crippled Bottom Line of People value/Planet harm and People value/Planet harm is proposed as the “what” to measure and the change process of “understanding-defining-measuring-communicating-leading change” is proposed as the “how” to change.Research limitations/implicationsThe research is based on identifying the main stakeholders based on sustainability definitions and from that point mostly on deductive reasoning.Practical implicationsThe practical implications are that organizations could define sustainability indicators with objectives that are linked to global limits.Social implicationsAdvocating the use of price as a social indicator could have social implications.Originality/valueThe paper contributes to the discussion of how to link global limits to organizational measurements and targets.

- Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore what options the adult learner has for continued learning and what role universities are playing in providing net-based education. Current options for lifelong learning and improvement opportunities in the educational process are described based on an assessment inspired by principles of lean management. Design/methodology/approach – Sweden is chosen as an example. The current level of net-based university education and the demand for it is assessed using official Swedish data. Lean management principles are used as a starting point to define parameters for interest for the adult learner. These parameters are then converted into a five-level scale for assessing current performance with focus on university courses. The authors also study how Swedish County Councils manage their employee education and carry out a check of courses offered by massive open online course providers. Findings – Lean management principles in combination with customer focus seem to present relevant parameters for assessing distance education. Preliminary results indicate that lean lifelong learning has a considerable improvement potential. The main reasons for this potential seem to be more of a bureaucratic and political nature, whereas technology and resources appear to be less of an issue. Practical implications – The results have implications for both universities and organisations. The pressure on universities to become more customer-focussed, while at the same time, cost-effectiveness is likely to increase. Originality/value – Using the customer perspective for educational services and applying lean principles to education.

- The multitude of challenges related to sustainable development require, not only a shift in mind-set but also high competence in most sectors of employment. But how could we know if a university education is going to provide necessary competence in sustainable development? A model being developed to measure university sustainability is the Assessment Instrument of Sustainability in Higher Education (AISHE). Using the logic of self-assessment and based on the Triple Bottom Line this model deals with operations, education, research, interaction with society and core values with a so called identity module. The model makes an operationalization of sustainable development and its structure should be usable for constructing a quick assessment system similar to those of many business excellence models. Finding out the level of university sustainability is clearly not very easy for presumptive students. Furthermore, we can assume that since being sustainable is politically correct there is a risk of “sustainability washing” of information provided. Current university ranking systems do not seem to correspond well with how universities are working with sustainable development. The research question is if the AISHE-model could be converted into a credible quick assessment tool by relying on information provided by the university web-site. For this to work the university needs to have a culture that promotes transparency. With the rapid development of information technology it could be expected that more and more countries will have the conditions for using web-sites for providing the necessary information. Swedish university web-sites are used for testing the model. Sweden has a high level of transparency and is therefore thought to form a suitable example. This paper deals with conceptual development of the assessment model. Further studies will be carried out to validate the model. Results indicate that a structured web-site analysis can be used to quantify information that is organised according to chosen parts of the AISHE-model. The first results indicate that Swedish universities still have a long way to go in becoming sustainable.

Early Labour App: Developing a practice-based mobile health application for digital early labour support

- Background: Pregnant women in early labour have felt excluded from professional care, and their partners have been restricted from being involved in the birthing process. Expectant parents must be better prepared to deal with fear and stress during early labour. There is a need for evidence-based information and digital applications that can empower couples during childbirth.Objective: To develop and identify requirements for a practice-based mobile health (mHealth) application for Digital Early Labour Support.Methods: This research started with creating an expert group composed of a multidisciplinary team capable of informing the app development process on evidence-based practices. In consultation with the expert group, the app was built using an agile development approach (i.e., Scrum) within a continuous software engineering setting (i.e., CI/CD, DevOps), also including user and security tests.Results: During the development of the Early Labour App, two main types of challenges emerged: (1) user challenges, related to understanding the users’ needs and experience with the app, and (2) team challenges, related to the software development team in particular, and the necessary skills for translating an early labour intervention into a digital solution. This study reaffirms the importance of midwife support via blended care and the opportunity of complementing it with an app. The Early Labour App was easy to use, the women needed little to no help, and the partner's preparation was facilitated. The combination of the app together with blended care opens up awareness, thoughts and feelings about the method and provides good preparation for the birth.Conclusion: We propose the creation of the Early Labour App, a mHealth app for early labour support. The preliminary tests conducted for the Early Labour App show that the app is mature, allowing it to be used in the project's Randomised Control Trial, which is already ongoing.

- Background: Interventions simultaneously targeting multiple risk factors and mechanisms are most likely to be effective in preventing cognitive impairment. This was indicated in the Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER) testing a multidomain lifestyle intervention among at-risk individuals. The importance of medical food at the early symptomatic disease stage, prodromal Alzheimer’s disease (AD), was emphasized in the LipiDiDiet trial. The feasibility and effects of multimodal interventions in prodromal AD are unclear. Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility of an adapted FINGER-based multimodal lifestyle intervention, with or without medical food, among individuals with prodromal AD. Methods: MIND-ADmini is a multinational proof-of-concept 6-month randomized controlled trial (RCT), with four trial sites (Sweden, Finland, Germany, France). The trial targeted individuals with prodromal AD defined using the International Working Group-1 criteria, and with vascular or lifestyle-related risk factors. The parallel-group RCT includes three arms: 1) multimodal lifestyle intervention (nutritional guidance, exercise, cognitive training, vascular/metabolic risk management and social stimulation); 2) multimodal lifestyle intervention+medical food (Fortasyn Connect); and 3) regular health advice/ care (control group). Primary outcomes are feasibility and adherence. Secondary outcomes are adherence to the individual intervention domains and healthy lifestyle changes. Results: Screening began on 28 September 2017 and was completed on 21 May 2019. Altogether 93 participants were randomized and enrolled. The intervention proceeded as planned. Conclusions: For the first time, this pilot trial tests the feasibility and adherence to a multimodal lifestyle intervention, alone or combined with medical food, among individuals with prodromal AD. It can serve as a model for combination therapy trials (non-pharma, nutrition-based and/or pharmacological interventions).
