  • Maximizing value yield in wood industry through flexible sawing and product grading based on wane and log shape
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Computers and Electronics in Agriculture. - : Elsevier. - 0168-1699 .- 1872-7107. ; 216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The optimization of sawing processes in the wood industry is critical for maximizing efficiency and profitability. The introduction of computerized tomography scanners provides sawmill operators with three-dimensional internal models of logs, which can be used to assess value and yield more accurately. We present a methodology for solving the sawing optimization problem employing a flexible sawing scheme that allows greater flexibility in cutting logs into products while considering product quality classes influenced by wane defects. The methodology has two phases: preprocessing and optimization. In the preprocessing phase, two alternative algorithms are given that generate and evaluate the potential sawing positions of products by considering the 3D surface of the log, product size requirements, and product quality classes. In the optimization phase, a maximum set-packing problem is solved for the preprocessed data using mixed-integer programming (MIP), aiming to obtain a feasible cut pattern that maximizes value yield. This is implemented in a system named FlexSaw, which takes advantage of parallel computation during the preprocessing phase and utilizes a MIP solver during the optimization phase. The proposed sawing methods are evaluated on the Swedish Pine Stem Bank. Additionally, FlexSaw is compared with an existing tool that utilizes cant sawing. Results demonstrate the superiority of flexible sawing. While the practical feasibility of implementing a flexible way of sawing logs is constrained by the limitations of current sawmill machinery, the potential increase in yield promotes the exploration of alternative machinery in the wood industry.

  • Quantification of goods purchases and waste generation at the level of individual households
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Industrial Ecology. - : Blackwell Publishing. - 1088-1980 .- 1530-9290. ; 18:2, s. 227-241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quantifying differences in resource use and waste generation between individual households and exploring the reasons for the variations observed implies the need for disaggregated data on household activities and related physical flows. The collection of disaggregated data for water use, gas use, electricity use, and mobility has been reported in the literature and is normally achieved through sensors and computational algorithms. This study focuses on collecting disaggregated data for goods consumption and related waste generation at the level of individual households. To this end, two data collection approaches were devised and evaluated: (1) triangulating shopping receipt analysis and waste component analysis and (2) tracking goods consumption and waste generation using a smartphone. A case study on two households demonstrated that it is possible to collect quantitative data on goods consumption and related waste generation on a per unit basis for individual households. The study suggested that the type of data collected can be relevant in a number of different research contexts: eco-feedback; user-centered research; living-lab research; and life cycle impacts of household consumption. The approaches presented in this study are most applicable in the context of user-centered or living-lab research. For the other contexts, alternative data sources (e.g., retailers and producers) may be better suited to data collection on larger samples, though at a lesser level of detail, compared with the two data collection approaches devised and evaluated in this study.

  • Machining of additively manufactured alloy 718 in as-built and heat-treated condition: surface integrity and cutting tool wear
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. - : Springer Nature. - 0268-3768 .- 1433-3015. ; 130:3-4, s. 1823-1842
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Additive manufacturing (AM) using powder bed fusion is becoming a mature technology that offers great possibilities and design freedom for manufacturing of near net shape components. However, for many gas turbine and aerospace applications, machining is still required, which motivates further research on the machinability and work piece integrity of additive-manufactured superalloys. In this work, turning tests have been performed on components made with both Powder Bed Fusion for Laser Beam (PBF-LB) and Electron Beam (PBF-EB) in as-built and heat-treated conditions. The two AM processes and the respective heat-treatments have generated different microstructural features that have a great impact on both the tool wear and the work piece surface integrity. The results show that the PBF-EB components have relatively lower geometrical accuracy, a rough surface topography, a coarse microstructure with hard precipitates and low residual stresses after printing. Turning of the PBF-EB material results in high cutting tool wear, which induces moderate tensile surface stresses that are balanced by deep compressive stresses and a superficial deformed surface that is greater for the heat-treated material. In comparison, the PBF-LB components have a higher geometrical accuracy, a relatively smooth topography and a fine microstructure, but with high tensile stresses after printing. Machining of PBF-LB material resulted in higher tool wear for the heat-treated material, increase of 49%, and significantly higher tensile surface stresses followed by shallower compressive stresses below the surface compared to the PBF-EB materials, but with no superficially deformed surface. It is further observed an 87% higher tool wear for PBF-EB in as-built condition and 43% in the heat-treated condition compared to the PBF-LB material. These results show that the selection of cutting tools and cutting settings are critical, which requires the development of suitable machining parameters that are designed for the microstructure of the material.

  • Labelling of Annotated Condition Monitoring Data Through Technical Language Processing
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Conference of the PHM Society 2023. - : The Prognostics and Health Management Society.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose a novel approach to facilitate supervised fault diagnosis on unlabelled but annotated industry datasets using human-centric technical language processing and weak supervision. Fault diagnosis through Condition Monitoring (CM) is vital for high safety and resource efficiency in the green transition and digital transformation of the process industry. Learning-based Intelligent Fault Diagnosis (IFD) methods are required to automate maintenance decisions and improve decision support for analysts. A major challenge is the lack of labelled industry datasets, limiting supervised IFD research to lab datasets. However, features learned from lab environments generalise poorly to field environments due to different signal distributions, artificial induction or acceleration of lab faults, and lab set-up properties such as average frequency profiles affecting learned features. In this study, we investigate how the unstructured free text fault annotations and maintenance work orders that are present in many industrial CM systems can be used for IFD through technical language processing, based on recent advances in natural language supervision. We introduce two distinct pipelines, one based on contrastive pre-training on large datasets, and one based on a small-data human-centric approach with unsupervised clustering methods. Finally, we showcase one example of the small-data fault classification implementation on a CM industry dataset with a SentenceBERT language model, kMeans clustering, and conventional signal processing methods. Fault class imbalance and time-shift uncertainty is overcome with weak supervision through aggregates of features, and human-centric clustering is used to integrate technical knowledge with the annotation-based fault classes. We show that our model can separate cable and sensor fault recordings from bearing-related fault recordings with an F1-score of 93. To our knowledge, this is the first system to classify faults in field industry CM data based only on associated unstructured fault annotations.

  • Processing of Condition Monitoring Annotations with BERT and Technical Language Substitution: A Case Study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 7th European Conference of the Prognostics and Health Management Society 2022. - : PHM Society. - 9781936263363 ; , s. 306-314
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Annotations in condition monitoring systems contain information regarding asset history and fault characteristics in the form of unstructured text that could, if unlocked, be used for intelligent fault diagnosis. However, processing these annotations with pre-trained natural language models such as BERT is problematic due to out-of-vocabulary (OOV) technical terms, resulting in inaccurate language embeddings. Here we investigate the effect of OOV technical terms on BERT and SentenceBERT embeddings by substituting technical terms with natural language descriptions. The embeddings were computed for each annotation in a pre-processed corpus, with and without substitution. The K-Means clustering score was calculated on sentence embeddings, and a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network was trained on word embeddings with the objective to recreate the output from a keyword-based annotation classifier. The K-Means score for SentenceBERT annotation embeddings improved by 40% at seven clusters by technical language substitution, and the labelling capacityof the BERT-LSTM model was improved from 88.3 to 94.2%. These results indicate that the substitution of OOV technical terms can improve the representation accuracy of the embeddings of the pre-trained BERT and SentenceBERT models, and that pre-trained language models can be used to process technical language.

  • Electro-responsivity of ionic liquid boundary layers in a polar solvent revealed by neutron reflectance
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 148:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using neutron reflectivity, the electro-responsive structuring of the non-halogenated ionic liquid (IL) trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium-bis(mandelato)borate, [P6,6,6,14][BMB], has been studied at a gold electrode surface in a polar solvent. For a 20% w/w IL mixture, contrast matched to the gold surface, distinct Kiessig fringes were observed for all potentials studied, indicative of a boundary layer of different composition to that of the bulk IL-solvent mixture. With applied potential, the amplitudes of the fringes from the gold-boundary layer interface varied systematically. These changes are attributable to the differing ratios of cations and anions in the boundary layer, leading to a greater or diminished contrast with the gold electrode, depending on the individual ion scattering length densities. Such electro-responsive changes were also evident in the reflectivities measured for the pure IL and a less concentrated (5% w/w) IL-solvent mixture at the same applied potentials, but gave rise to less pronounced changes. These measurements, therefore, demonstrate the enhanced sensitivity achieved by contrast matching the bulk solution and that the structure of the IL boundary layers formed in mixtures is strongly influenced by the bulk concentration. Together these results represent an important step in characterising IL boundary layers in IL-solvent mixtures and provide clear evidence of electro-responsive structuring of IL ions in their solutions with applied potential.

  • A psychometric evaluation of the Swedish translation of the Perceived Stress Scale: a Rasch analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BMC Psychiatry. - : Springer Nature. - 1471-244X. ; 23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Stress reflects physical and psychological reactions to imposing demands and is often measured using self-reports. A widely-used instrument is the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), intended to capture more general aspects of stress. A Swedish translation of the PSS is available but has not previously been examined using modern test theory approaches. The aim of the current study is to apply Rasch analysis to further the understanding of the PSS’ measurement properties, and, in turn, improve its utility in different settings. Methods: Data from 793 university students was used to investigate the dimensionality of different version of the PSS (14, 10, and 4 items) as well as potential response patterns among the participants. Results: The current study demonstrates that the PSS-14 has two separate factors, divided between negatively worded items (perceived stress) and positively worded items (perceived [lack of] control), although with only the negative subscale exhibiting good reliability. Response patterns were analyzed using Differential Item Functioning, which did not find an influence of gender on any of the items, but for age regarding the positive subscale (items 6 and 9). The PSS-10 also demonstrated adequate reliability for the negative subscale, but the PSS-4 was not deemed suitable as a unidimensional scale. Conclusions: Based on the results, none of the versions of the PSS should be used by sum-scoring all of the items. Only the negative items from the PSS-14 or PSS-10 can be used as unidimensional scales to measure general aspects of stress. As for different response patterns, gender may nevertheless be important to consider, as prior research has found differences on several items. Meanwhile, content validity is discussed, questioning the relevance of anger and being upset when measuring more general aspects of stress. Finally, a table to convert the PSS-7 (i.e., negative items) ordinal sum scores to interval level scores is provided.
