  • Particle physics at the European Spallation Source
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physics reports. - : Elsevier. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 1023, s. 1-84
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world’s brightest neutron source. As such, it has the potential for a particle physics program with a unique reach and which is complementary to that available at other facilities. This paper describes proposed particle physics activities for the ESS. These encompass the exploitation of both the neutrons and neutrinos produced at the ESS for high precision (sensitivity) measurements (searches).

  • Surface functionalized nanofibers for the removal of chromium(VI) from aqueous solutions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 1385-8947 .- 1873-3212. ; 245, s. 201-209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers functionalized with amine groups (PAN-NH2) were prepared using a simple one-step reaction route. The PAN-NH2 nanofibers were investigated for the removal of chromium(VI) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption and the kinetic characteristics were evaluated in batch process. The adsorption process showed pH dependence and the maximum Cr(VI) adsorption occurred at pH = 2. The Langmuir adsorption model described well the experimental adsorption data and estimated a maximum loading capacity of 156 mg/g, which is a markedly high value compared to other adsorbents reported. The kinetics studies indicated that the equilibrium was attained after 90 min and the experimental data followed a pseudo-second order model suggesting a chemisorption process as the rate limiting step. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) revealed that the adsorption of Cr(VI) species on PAN-NH2 was facilitated through both electrostatic attraction and surface complexation. High desorption efficiency (> 90%) of Cr(VI) was achieved using diluted base solutions that may allow the reuse of PAN-NH2 nanofibers.

  • Metamorphic Zonation by Out‐of‐Sequence Thrusting at Back‐Stepping Subduction Zones : Sequential Accretion of the Caledonian Internides, Central Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Tectonics. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0278-7407 .- 1944-9194. ; 37:10, s. 3545-3576
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exhumation of the high‐grade metamorphic Seve Nappe Complex and its emplacement between lower‐grade nappes has been related to wedge extrusion in the central Scandinavian Caledonides. To test this hypothesis, the kinematic evolution of the Caledonian nappe pile is studied by systematic structural mapping in central and northern Jämtland, Sweden. Structural data, combined with petrological and quartz microstructure observations, document pervasive top‐to‐the‐ESE, foreland‐directed shearing under progressively decreasing metamorphic grade across the entire nappe pile. Mylonitic foliation, foliation‐parallel boudinage, and abundant top‐to‐the‐ESE and rare, scattered top‐to‐the‐WNW shear‐sense indicators imply foreland‐directed general shear. This deformation regime caused exhumation by concurrent thrusting and vertical ductile thinning. We propose a specific succession of in‐ and out‐of‐sequence thrusts that generated the metamorphic zonation. Our model envisions in‐sequence propagation of thrusts during exhumation of the Seve Nappe Complex, related to subduction of Baltica beneath a volcanic arc within Iapetus. Concurrently, Iapetus subducted beneath Laurentia farther to the west. When Iapetus was closed, Baltica subduction stepped westward and continued beneath Laurentia. The back stepping of subduction at the onset of continental collision caused out‐of‐sequence propagation of the orogenic wedge. Thrusting cut downsection across the existing tectonostratigraphy, emplacing units of lower metamorphic grade above the high‐grade Seve Nappe Complex. This imbrication generated the present metamorphic zonation of the Caledonian nappe pile during sustained convergence between Laurentia and Baltica.

  • A design for an electromagnetic filter for precision energy measurements at the tritium endpoint
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0146-6410 .- 1873-2224. ; 106, s. 120-131
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a detailed description of the electromagnetic filter for the PTOLEMY project to directly detect the Cosmic Neutrino Background (CNB). Starting with an initial estimate for the orbital magnetic moment, the higher-order drift process of E x B is configured to balance the gradient-B drift motion of the electron in such a way as to guide the trajectory into the standing voltage potential along the mid-plane of the filter. As a function of drift distance along the length of the filter, the filter zooms in with exponentially increasing precision on the transverse velocity component of the electron kinetic energy. This yields a linear dimension for the total filter length that is exceptionally compact compared to previous techniques for electromagnetic filtering. The parallel velocity component of the electron kinetic energy oscillates in an electrostatic harmonic trap as the electron drifts along the length of the filter. An analysis of the phase-space volume conservation validates the expected behavior of the filter from the adiabatic invariance of the orbital magnetic moment and energy conservation following Liouville's theorem for Hamiltonian systems.

  • Tracing the sources of legitimacy : the impact of deliberation in participatory natural resource management
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Policy sciences. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0032-2687 .- 1573-0891. ; 48:4, s. 443-461
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is widely assumed that stakeholder participation has great potential to improve the perceived legitimacy of natural resource management (NRM) and that the deliberative-democratic qualities of participatory procedures are central to the prospects of success. However, attempts to measure the actual effects of deliberation on the perceived legitimacy of participatory NRM are rare. This article examines the links between deliberation and legitimacy in participatory NRM empirically by tracing the determinants of stakeholders' level of policy support and their views about procedural fairness. The study uses statistical methods to analyse survey data from a state-led initiative to develop new plans for ecosystem-based coastal and marine management through a participatory approach in five coastal areas in Sweden. We find that the perceived quality of deliberation had a positive impact on these aspects of legitimacy. However, both policy support and perceived procedural fairness were mainly driven by instrumental-substantive considerations rather than deliberative-democratic qualities of the process.

  • The ESSnuSB Design Study: Overview and Future Prospects
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Universe. - : MDPI. - 2218-1997. ; 9:8
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ESSnuSB is a design study for an experiment to measure the CP violation in the leptonic sector at the second neutrino oscillation maximum using a neutrino beam driven by the uniquely powerful ESS linear accelerator. The reduced impact of systematic errors on sensitivity at the second maximum allows for a very precise measurement of the CP violating parameter. This review describes the fundamental advantages of measurement at the second maximum, the necessary upgrades to the ESS linac in order to produce a neutrino beam, the near and far detector complexes, and the expected physics reach of the proposed ESSnuSB experiment, concluding with the near future developments aimed at the project realization.

  • Studies on the adsorption of chromium(VI) onto 3-Mercaptopropionic acid coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0021-9797 .- 1095-7103. ; 425, s. 36-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chromium (Cr) in the form of Cr(VI) is deemed toxic in water due to its mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. For the successful removal of Cr(VI), we demonstrate a novel adsorbent consisting of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) functionalized with 3-Mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed the functionalization of nanoparticles and presence of sulfonate groups. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the functionalized adsorbent recovered 45 mg of Cr(VI)/g of 3-MPA coated SPION at initial concentration of 50 mg/L aqueous solution at pH 1 with less than 1% of Fe dissolution from SPION. The results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that Cr(VI) chemisorbed onto the adsorbent. Hence, the XPS spectra did not indicate any reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) upon adsorption. The adsorption data were better fitted for the Freundlich model. Moreover, the Cr(VI) adsorption kinetics on functionalized SPION followed a pseudo-second order rate, revealing chemisorption as the dominant mechanism. The high Cr(VI) removal, rapid adsorption kinetics and stability of adsorbent indicate that 3-MPA coated SPION could be an efficient adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI). (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. • Determination of the small amount of proteins interacting with TiO2 nanotubes by AFM-measurement
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Biomaterials. - : Elsevier. - 0142-9612 .- 1878-5905. ; 192, s. 368-376
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Detecting the small amounts of proteins interacting effectively with the solid film electrodes surface still remains a challenge. To address this, in this work, a new approach was proposed by the combination of the adhesion forces and the molecular interaction measured with AFM. Cytochrome c (Cyt C) interacting effectively with TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) was chosen as a probe. The amounts of Cyt C molecules interacting effectively on TNAs surface (CTNA) range from 5.5×10-12 to 7.0×10-12 mol/cm2 (68.2-86.8 ng/cm2) and they are comparable with the values obtained by the electrochemistry method in the literature, in evidence of the accuracy of this AFM-based approach. The reliability of the proposed approach was further verified by conducting Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) measurements and estimating the enhancement factor (EF). This interaction-based AFM approach can be used to accurately obtain the small amounts of adsorbed substances on the solid film electrodes surface in the applications such as biosensors, biocatalysis, and drug delivery, etc.

  • Ecological and functional consequences of coastal ocean acidification : Perspectives from the Baltic-Skagerrak System
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ambio. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 48:8, s. 831-854
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ocean temperatures are rising; species are shifting poleward, and pH is falling (ocean acidification, OA). We summarise current understanding of OA in the brackish Baltic-Skagerrak System, focussing on the direct, indirect and interactive effects of OA with other anthropogenic drivers on marine biogeochemistry, organisms and ecosystems. Substantial recent advances reveal a pattern of stronger responses (positive or negative) of species than ecosystems, more positive responses at lower trophic levels and strong indirect interactions in food-webs. Common emergent themes were as follows: OA drives planktonic systems toward the microbial loop, reducing energy transfer to zooplankton and fish; and nutrient/food availability ameliorates negative impacts of OA. We identify several key areas for further research, notably the need for OA-relevant biogeochemical and ecosystem models, and understanding the ecological and evolutionary capacity of Baltic-Skagerrak ecosystems to respond to OA and other anthropogenic drivers.
