  • A Proposal for a Next Generation European Neutron Source
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: VI European Conference On Neutron Scattering (ECNS2015). - : IOP Publishing. ; 746:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We argue that it is not too early to begin the planning process for a next generation neutron source for Europe, even as the European Spallation Source is being constructed. We put forward three main arguments. Firstly, nowadays the period between the first scientific concept of a new facility being proposed and its actual realisation is approaching half a century. We show evidence for this. Secondly, there is a straightforward development of the short pulse/long pulse spallation concepts that will deliver gains in neutron brightness of more than a factor 30 over what the ESS will soon deliver and provide the optimum balance between resolution and intensity. We describe our concept, which is a spallation source where the proton pulse length is matched to the moderating time of slow neutrons. Thirdly, when we look at our colleagues in astronomy and high energy physics, we see that they have a totally different, more global and more ambitious approach to the coming generations of large facilities. We argue that it is time for the neutron community not simply to rest upon its laurels and take what is given but to be proactive..

  • Harness mobility : Managing the off-task property
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: DESRIST 2010: The 5th International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology 2010, in St Gallen, Switzerland. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer. ; 6105, s. 258-269, s. 258-269
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Technological advancements in mobile computing and wireless networks open up to new applications and new user-groups in the mobile workforce. However, a considerable part of the mobile workforce, such as e.g. drivers or healthcare staff, is chiefly performing other tasks than interacting with their computers. As a result, they are not able to pay attention to computer interaction, making them mainly off computer tasks. The aim of the paper is to develop a design theory to manage off-task situations in mobile computing. Interviews were performed with developers of an information system comprising mobile devices for drivers. From the interviews, a design of an artifact and a design theory based on a strategy to automate routine administration task using place awareness is presented. The eight components of IS design theory by Gregor and Jones is applied as a theoretical framework.

  • Can preschoolers profit from a teachable agent based play-and-learn game in mathematics?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Artificial Intelligence in Education. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642391118 - 9783642391125 ; LNCS, vol 7926, s. 289-298
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A large number of studies carried out on pupils aged 8-14 have shown that teachable agent (TA) based games are beneficial for learning. The present pioneering study aimed to initiate research looking at whether TA based games can be used as far down as preschool age. Around the age of four, theory of mind (ToM) is under development and it is not unlikely that a fully developed ToM is necessary to benefit from a TA’s socially engaging characteristics. 10 preschool children participated in an experiment of playing a mathematics game. The participants playing a TA-version of the game engaged socially with the TA and were not disturbed by his presence. Thus, this study unveils exciting possibilities for further research of the hypothesised educational benefits in store for preschoolers with regard to play-and-learn games employing TAs.

  • Pupillary Correlates of Emotion and Cognition : A Computational Model
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 9th International IEEE/EMBS Conference On Neural Engineering (NER). - : IEEE. - 9781538679210 ; , s. 903-907
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In addition to controlling the influx of light to the retina, the pupil also reacts as a result of cognitive and emotional processing. This makes it possible to use pupil dilation as an index for cognitive effort and emotional arousal. We show how an extended version of a computational model of pupil dilation can account for pupillary contagion effects where the pupil of an observer dilates upon seeing another person with dilated pupils. We also show how the model can reproduce the effects of cognitive effort in a math exercise. Furthermore, we investigate how the model can account for different explanations for the abnormal pupil response seen in individuals with or at risk for autism spectrum disorder. The reported computer simulations illustrate the usefulness of system-level models of the brain in addressing complex cognitive and emotional phenomena.

  • A social node model for realising information dissemination strategies in delay tolerant networks
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 15th ACM international conference on Modeling, analysis and simulation of wireless and mobile systems. - New york : ACM Press. ; , s. 79-88, s. 78-79
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) as an emerging content dissemination platform, mobile nodes opportunistically exchange content as they meet, with the intent of disseminating content among nodes that share common interests. During a meeting, nodes can exchange both content of direct interest to themselves as well as content that is of interest to a larger set of nodes that may be encountered in the future. The utility of DTN is governed by the content exchange opportunity (the amount of content that can be exchanged during a meeting) as well as the selection of content to be exchanged in order to maximise the interest nodes will have in information they are exposed to. Considering that there is a cost associated with the content exchange (e.g. battery usage, buffer occupancy or consumed transmission opportunity) the aim for nodes participating in content dissemination should be to maximise their payoff. In this paper, we contribute a generic framework for describing the characteristics of content exchange among participating nodes in a network. We incorporate a distributed information popularity measurement and the pairwise interaction of nodes modelled as a bargaining problem. The outcome of this process is the fair split up of dwelling time as a network resource and the selection of which content objects to exchange in order to maximise the nodes’ payoff. The framework is generally intended to be used as a capstone for investigation of content dissemination properties and various content exchange strategies in a DTN, a topic addressed in this paper and experiments conducted to validate the function and correctness of the proposed framework.

  • Strategies for quality assurance of intensity modulated radiation therapy
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: 8TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON 3D RADIATION DOSIMETRY (IC3DDOSE). - : Institute of Physics (IOP). ; 573, s. 012015-012015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In late 2011 The Swedish Society of Radiation Physics formed a working group to concentrate on the Quality Assurance of modern radiation therapy techniques. The given task was to identify and summarise the different QA strategies in Sweden and also the international recommendations. This was used to formulate recommendations for practical guidelines within Sweden. In this paper a brief summery of the group's work is presented. All the Swedish radiation therapy centres do a pre treatment verification measurement as QA for every new IMRT and VMAT plan. Physicists do it and they believe it to be time consuming. A general standpoint from all the centres was that new guidelines and legislation is needed to allow QA that does not require a measurement. Based on various international publications and recommendations the working group has presented two strategies, one where all new plans are checked through measurement and one where no measurement is needed. The measurement-based strategy is basically the same as the one used today with an extended machine QA part. The other presented strategy is process oriented where all the different parts of the treatment chain are checked separately. The final report can be found in Swedish on http://www.radiofysik.org.

  • Evaluation and optimization of a Swedish Net ZEB - Using load matching and grid interaction indicators
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the First Building Simulation and Optimization Conference, Loughborough, UK, September 10-11, 2012.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Net Zero Energy Buildings, Net ZEBs, is one of many necessary measures for climate change mitigation as they may reduce the energy consumption in the building sector. The Net ZEB interacts with a grid infrastructure. It is therefore important to consider the interaction with the grid in the design phase. This paper reports an evaluation of a proposed design of a Net ZEB in the south of Sweden evaluating load matching and grid interaction using simulated data sets with hourly resolution. The aim was to find a design with as high load matching and as low grid interaction as possible. The results show difficulties of achieving a high load matching between the building load and on-site generation, due to the Nordic climate and the relatively low loads during daytime, when the availability of solar energy is high. The building is likely to accomplish the goal of a Net ZEB balance. If higher flexibility is sought, a larger energy storage should be considered.
