  • Kris i bostadsfrågan : för en solidarisk bostadspolitik
  • 2023
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract

  • What lies beneath the surface? : A case study of citizens' moral reasoning with regard to biodiversity
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Environmental Values. - : White Horse Press. - 0963-2719 .- 1752-7015. ; 20:2, s. 217-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on a Swedish case where a biological insecticide has been used to fight mosquitoes in order to reduce the nuisance to humans. The case concerns conflicting values regarding environmental protection. People's quality of life in the summers is placed in opposition to long-term risks to biodiversity. On the surface, the affected lay-population is one-sidedly positive about the intervention. However, interviews with citizens revealed a more complex picture, where the majority also touched upon value conflicts. At the same time, different psychological mechanisms for handling these dilemmas hindered more critical and doubtful views from being included in societal deliberations concerning the intervention. By way of conclusion, we argue that it is important to create deliberative arrangements that acknowledge the emotional and contradictory side of human nature and that encourage people to dare to voice standpoints that may be seen as uncomfortable or inconsistent.

  • Discourses and practices of the ‘New Normal’ Towards an interdisciplinary research agenda on crisis and the normalization of anti- and post‑democratic action
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Language and Politics. - Amsterdam : John Benjamins Publishing Company. - 1569-2159 .- 1569-9862. ; 22:4, s. 415-437
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This position paper argues for an interdisciplinary agenda relating crises to on-going processes of normalization of anti- and post-democratic action. We call for exploring theoretically and empirically the ‘new normal’ logic introduced into public imagination on the back of various crises, including the recent ‘Refugee Crisis’ in Europe, COVID-19 pandemic, or the still ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Gathering researchers of populism, extremism, discrimination, and other formats of anti- and post-democratic action, we propose investigating how, why, and under which conditions, discourses and practices underlying normalization processes re-emerge to challenge the liberal democratic order. We argue exploring the multiple variants of ‘the new normal’ related to crises, historically and more recently. We are interested in how and why these open pathways for politics of exclusion, inequality, xenophobia and other patterns of anti- and post-democratic action while deepening polarization and radicalization of society as well as propelling far-right politics and ideologies.

  • Hope and Technology : Other-Oriented Hope Related to Eye Gaze Technology for Children with Severe Disabilities
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - : MDPI AG. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 16:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introducing advanced assistive technology such as eye gaze controlled computers can improve a person's quality of life and awaken hope for a child's future inclusion and opportunities in society. This article explores the meanings of parents' and teachers' other-oriented hope related to eye gaze technology for children with severe disabilities. A secondary analysis of six parents' and five teachers' interview transcripts was conducted in accordance with a phenomenological-hermeneutic research method. The eye gaze controlled computer creates new imaginations of a brighter future for the child, but also becomes a source for motivation and action in the present. The other-oriented hope occurs not just in the future; it is already there in the present and opens up new alternatives and possibilities to overcome the difficulties the child is encountering today. Both the present situation and the hope for the future influence each other, and both affect the motivation for using the technology. This emphasises the importance of clinicians giving people opportunities to express how they see the future and how technology could realise this hope.

  • Recontextualisation of neoliberalism and the increasingly conceptual nature of discourse : challenges for critical discourse studies
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Discourse & Society. - London, United Kingdom : Sage Publications. - 0957-9265 .- 1460-3624. ; 27:3, s. 308-321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article highlights that by focusing on concepts, many contemporary discourses increasingly turn towards (re/definitions of) various abstract ideas while moving their focus away from representations of doers as well benefactors of social and politico-economic processes. Focusing on the process of such an increasingly conceptual nature of discourse as one of the key displays of contemporary neoliberal logic in public and regulatory discourse, the article argues that the concept-driven logic – evident in policies, but also in media and political genres – necessitates new theoretical (and analytical) tools in critical discourse studies (CDS). It is suggested that, on the one hand, incorporation of ideas from within conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) into CDS is necessary. On the other hand, it is also argued that an in-depth rethinking of the ways in which CDS approaches recontextualisation as a concept is equally crucial. As is argued, both insights might help tackling the conceptual dynamics in/of discourses by tracing the conceptual logic of discourse and identifying ideological ontologies of contemporary public and regulatory discourses. They also help scrutinise discourses in which social practice is often regulated and where the image of non-agentic ‘invisible’ social change allows for legitimisation of the oftennegative social and politico-economic dynamics.

  • Human Rights Education as Democratic Education The Teaching Traditions of Children's Human Rights in Swedish Early Childhood Education and School
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Children's Rights. - Pa Leiden : Brill Academic Publishers. - 0927-5568 .- 1571-8182. ; 27:4, s. 694-718
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the teaching traditions of children's human rights in four levels of education in Swedish early childhood education and school by drawing on a three-year long didactic (Didaktik) research project on the teaching and learning of human rights. The purpose of the article is threefold. First, the aims, content and methods used in the teaching of the four levels are compiled. Second, the main characteristics of the observed teaching are analysed. Third, the question of why rights are taught is examined using Roberts' concept of curriculum emphases (1982). The article identifies the aims, content and methods used within each level of education and the main characteristics of the teaching of human rights and shows that the teaching of human rights often consists of the content themes interaction and the life conditions of others. When further analysed, the main conclusion is that the teaching tradition of human rights is strongly rooted in the fundamental and democratic values on which Swedish education is based (Education Act, 2010) - a democratic curriculum emphasis.

  • Challenges in the Guardianship of Unaccompanied Minors Seeking Asylum
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Children's Rights. - : Brill. - 0927-5568 .- 1571-8182. ; 26:3, s. 489-509
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we explore the research literature relating to the guardianship of unaccompanied minors seeking asylum. In particular, we seek to find out what type of dilemmas have been identified by research concerning the guardianship of unaccompanied minors, and the focus that the literature has therefore taken. A comprehensive search of identified databases was conducted. Ultimately, 38 publications were selected for analysis. The review was qualitative and inductive. The results of the review suggest that research has identified and focused on challenges in the form of diverging policy such as gaps and inconsistencies in guardianship institutions, as well as challenges in balancing different objectives concerning the guardianship role, such as conflicting interest in the guardianship assignment or between different actors involved in protecting the child’s interest. The conclusion is that different configurations of guardianship institutions, as well as the identified challenges for practice, appear to be related to the welfare state model. Therefore, future research concerning guardianship for unaccompanied minors needs to move beyond legal sources and policy documents by focusing on empirically informed research on the relationship between child care/protection, principles of assessing the best interest of the child and the welfare state systems.
