  • Utmaningen med utmaningsdriven utbildning
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Högre Utbildning. - Lund : Cappelen Damm Akademisk. - 2000-7558.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Does Deliberative Education Increase Civic Competence? : Results from a Field Experiment
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Experimental Political Science. - : Cambridge University Press. - 2052-2630 .- 2052-2649. ; 7:3, s. 199-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How should education be structured to most effectively increase civic outcomes such as political knowledge and democratic values? We present results from a field experiment in which we compare the effects of deliberative education and traditional teacher-centered education. The study is the largest field experiment on deliberative education to date and involved more than 1,200 students in 59 classrooms. We test the effects on four forms of civic competence: political knowledge, political interest, democratic values, and political discussion. In contrast to previous research, we find little evidence that deliberative education significantly increases civic competence.

  • How pedagogical relations in early years settings are reconfigured by interactive touchscreens
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Educational Technology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0007-1013 .- 1467-8535. ; 53:1, s. 58-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While interactive touchscreens are currently entering into educational practice, little is known about what this means for learning in early childhood and, in particular, how touchscreens shape action and communication. In this paper, we examine the interactions of 2-year-olds and their teachers in a multilingual preschool in Sweden. We analyse the communicative environment between the children, teachers and shared touchscreens and books in the context of reading. A mixed-methods analysis was used, taking a concept of action that includes both verbal, non-verbal utterances and digital touch. The analysis shows a reconfiguration to the interactional dynamic where children perform comparable amounts of actions in sessions with the touchscreen and book reading but less talk during the touchscreen sessions. However, while talking less, children display other types of communicative actions. We analyse the changing interactional dynamic that follows, its implications to learning and early childhood pedagogical practice and how interaction can be reconceptualised as cycles of communication and action in which educational scaffolding unfolds. Practitioner notes What is already known about this topic Touchscreens are a significant part of children's lives and educational curricula. There is considerable uncertainty on how touchscreens can be incorporated into early childhood education. Little is known about how educational social interaction changes with touchscreens such as iPads. What this paper adds A mixed methods multimodal analysis of the changing actions and dynamics of iPads as compared with bookreading. Children's patterns of communication change towards less talk and more bodily communication, while teachers’ actions remain somewhat similar. Touch actions change the dynamics of interaction, can alter the pedagogical situation and bring a reconceptualisation towards a cyclical and embodied view of interaction. Implications for practice and/or policy New patterns of action may require a recalibration of educational practices. Teachers need to attend to new sets of touch actions that children use to communicate and act with as displays of knowledge. The use of touch screens should be seen as complementary to established practices of language and literacy training (such as book reading) rather than replacing them.

  • Touch and translanguaging in a multilingual early childhood education setting
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Multimodality & Society. - : Sage Publications. - 2634-9795 .- 2634-9809. ; 2:3, s. 300-322
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many children grow up in multilingual communities characterised by linguistic heterogeneity and semiotic and cultural complexity. Translanguaging theory has provided a perspective attuned to communication and education in multilingual settings. However, translanguaging pedagogies have not yet had a broad uptake in early educational settings. The recent interest in embodiment within translanguaging studies and the study of touch combinedly provide a potential perspective for early childhood education. This study examines the role of touch in a multilingual preschool featuring 2-year-olds. The results point to two key functions for touch. One is that touch creates a shared experiential ground where languages can be learned. The other function is that touch allows children to sensorially explore and learn multicultural experiences from the diverse cultural and linguistic systems available. Based on the results, the role of touch in early childhood translanguaging is discussed as a way forward for translanguaging pedagogies for creating both equitable and diverse educational opportunities for children in multicultural and multilingual communities.

  • White ignorance, race and feminist politics in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Ethnic and Racial Studies. - UK : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0141-9870 .- 1466-4356. ; 43:16, s. 249-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the Swedish government’s policy document on a feministpolicy to reduce and prevent men’s violence against women. Permeated byracial ignorance and politics of difference this document systematically andconsistently excludes and ignores racial and ethnic power structures and theirconsequences in migrant minorities’ daily lives and experience. The articleraises questions about why some knowledge is silenced or abandoned whilesome is embraced and encouraged. Within a wider intersectional framework, and through critical race theory and ignorance studies, it investigates theknowledge produced in the government document and the way itreproduces, maintains, and normalizes racial otherness and social exclusion.

  • The media welfare state : A citizen perspective
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Communication. - : SAGE Publications. - 0267-3231 .- 1460-3705. ; 37:3, s. 330-349
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last decades the Nordic media model has been challenged by neoliberal policy and welfare retrenchment. This study asks about the extent to which the values, functions and institutions of the “media welfare state” are supported by the adult Swedish citizenry, despite political mobilization against it. Drawing on a national survey (n = 2003) this study shows that the media welfare state is generally well-supported by the population. Using exploratory statistical analysis, we identify a media welfare state of mind. While widespread in the population, this attitudinal constellation is more common in older segments of the population, in the working-class, and by those who frequently use and trust public service media. The main conclusion is that support for the media welfare state primarily can be explained by political attitudes, where left-leaning and GAL-oriented individuals are more positive than people holding right-wing and TAN-attitudes.

  • Click-guides and Panic buttons : Designed possibilities for youth agency and user empowerment in online youth counselling services
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Childhood. - Sage publications : SAGE Publications. - 0907-5682 .- 1461-7013. ; 24:2, s. 260-278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines how possibilities for agency are designed into online youth counselling services, as well as how such possibilities are addressed by young prospective users during the design of the services. The data are drawn both from the design of a national website for youth clinics in Sweden and from a design project developing e-services for local youth clinics in a Swedish municipality. The agency of young users is here treated as a key concern for understanding how user empowerment is accomplished through the design of websites and e-services. Using combined research materials (i.e. two websites and focus group meetings), this study demonstrates how design features may both facilitate and restrict young people’s involvement and control over sensitive and private issues. In addition, we demonstrate how the designed possibilities for empowerment may allow young users to critically approach and effectively use such services.

  • Bortträngning pågår : Renovering som kulturellt trauma
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - : Sociologisk Forskning, Swedish Sociological Association. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 55:2-3, s. 415-439
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Displacement in the making. Renoviction as cultural traumaBased on interviews with tenants in an area facing eviction following forced renovation, this study presents an analysis of the reactions and forms of resistance that arise among residents in the early phase of a renovation process. The concepts of cultural trauma, resistance and action repertoires are used in the analysis to understand the processes that residents in renovation areas have to face and how their collective self-image and strategies for action change during these. We argue that the exceptionally high trust in Sweden, based on the Swedish welfare state and housing policy, results in traumatic experiences among tenants when facing forced renovation. In this study, we respond to questions about how traumatic experiences are expressed, what causes are identified by the tenants, and what forms of resistance emerge among tenants who face costly renovations. We hereby demonstrate how the experienced cultural trauma can be transformed into individual and collective resistance actions.

  • Border Management and Migration Controls in Sweden : Country Report
  • 2019
  • Rapport (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From a comparative European perspective, Sweden is generally known as a country pursuing relatively liberal asylum policies. One distinguishing feature of Swedish immigration policy has been the principle that persons who are given asylum are immediately granted permanent residence (although the law allows exemptions from this under certain circumstances). This report gives an overview of the Swedish legal and policy framework of border management and migration control – how it relates to EU regulations and policies; what key actors are involved in the implementation and what the key issues and challenges are in relation to this field.
