- Torsten Petterssons forskning utmärks av en mångfald och ett djup med få motstycken i nutida svenskspråkig litteraturvetenskap. Under de senaste 40 åren har han rört sig obehindrat mellan litteratur på en rad olika språk och från flertalet epoker. Till den vetenskapliga gärningen ska också läggas Torstens skönlitterära författarskap som omfattar dikter, noveller och kriminalromaner.Med denna festskrift, som utges i samband med att Torsten fyller 60 år, vill vi hylla honom och hans insats inom litteraturvetenskapen. Bidragen tar fasta på Torstens förmåga att överskrida gränser mellan discipliner, teman och metoder, och är skrivna av svenska och internationella forskare från en rad olika forskningsområden. Texterna behandlar ämnen som tolkningsteori och empirisk läsforskning, svensk, finlandssvensk, engelskspråkig och tysk litteratur, teologi och livsåskådning samt Torstens egen insats både som forskare och som skönlitterär författare.

- This essay argues that the marginal aesthetic phenomenon of arabesque and ornament played a central role in Goethe’s aesthetic thinking since the classical age. As a point of transition, the arabesque establishes a functional link between the world and the work, which enables the leap from the world into art and which promotes the experience of art in a higher sense. The aesthetic economy of the arabesque, which through saving forms the backdrop against which the lavishness of the work of art appears, points to an implicit idea of aesthetic heteronomy in Goethe’s theory of art, a heteronomy that shows the true physical, social, and historical context of the work.

- This paper provides an introduction to the problem of aesthetics in Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s oeuvre. Considering his aesthetic writing as a problem-historical process rather than as a comprehensive aesthetic theory or as an unsystematic collection of theoretical judgements, I would like to suggest a new way of analysing Goethe’s conception of the aesthetic. Although he never presented a program, he continuously addressed the same set of questions: What is representation? How is nature transformed into art? How do we represent images with words? What are the limits of the work? These questions, which all pertain to issues of representation, are never given a definite answer but remain open throughout Goethe’s work. In this paper I highlight four areas in which these questions are investigated: 1) the ambivalent interpretation of the concept of mimesis; 2) the problem of symbolic representation; 3) descriptions of works of art; 4) the arabesque and other forms of non-significant representations. Goethe’s discussion of these problems suggests that a classical, representational episteme coexists and, at the same time, is at odds with a modern, organic episteme.
