  • Fatty Acid Ratios in Freshwater Fish, Zooplankton and Zoobenthos - Are There Specific Optima?
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Lipids in Aquatic Ecosystems. - New York : Springer-Verlag New York. - 9780387886077 - 9780387893662 ; , s. 147-178
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Two groups of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), termed omega-3 and omega-6 in food (or here as n-3 and n-6 PUFA, respectively), are essential for all vertebrates and probably also for nearly all invertebrates. The absolute concentrations of the different PUFA are important, as is an appropriate balance between the two. The optimal ratio of n-3/n-6 is not known for most organisms but is anticipated to be more or less species-specific (Sargent et al. 1995). The three most important PUFA in vertebrates are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4n-6). Both EPA and ARA are precursors for biologically active eicosanoids that are vital components of cell membranes and play many dynamic roles in mediating and controlling a wide array of cellular activities (Crawford et al. 1989; Harrison 1990; Henderson et al. 1996; see Chap. 9). Since n-3 and n-6 PUFA cannot be synthesized de novo by most metazoans, they must be included in the diet, either as EPA, DHA and ARA, or as their precursors, such as α-linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3n-3, precursor of EPA and DHA) and linoleic acid (LIN, 18:2n-6, precursor of ARA) (Bell et al. 1986; Sargent et al. 1995). Both ALA and LIN are produced in the thylacoid membranes of algae and plants with chlorophyll (Sargent at al. 1987).

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agglomoration multigrid is used in many finite-volume codes for aerodynamic computations in order to reduce solution times. We show that an existing agglomeration multigrid solver developed for equations discretized with a vertex-centered, edge-based finite-volume scheme can be extended to accelerate convergence also for a vertex-centered discontinuous Galerkin method. Preliminary results for a subsonic as well as a transonic test case for the Euler equations in two space dimensions show a significant convergence acceleration for the discontinuous Galerkin equations using the agglomoration multigrid strategy.

  • Incorporating a Galerkin method into the existing vertex-centered edge-based finite volume solver edge
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: ADIGMA - a European initiative on the development of adaptive higher-order variational methods for aerospace applications. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642037061 - 9783642037078 ; , s. 39-52, s. 39-52
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method can be viewed as a generalization to higher orders of the finite volume method. At lowest order, the standard DG method reduces to the cell-centered finite volume method. We introduce for the Euler equations an alternative DG formulation that reduces to the vertex-centered version of the finite volume method at lowest order. The method has been successfully implemented for the Euler equations in two space dimensions, allowing a local polynomial order up to p=3 and supporting curved elements at the airfoil boundary. The implementation has been done as an extension within the existing edge-based vertex-centered finite-volume code Edge.

  • Modeling Intracellular Signaling Underlying Striatal Function in Health and Disease
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Computational Neuroscience. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 9780123978974 ; 123, s. 277-304
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Striatum, which is the input nucleus of the basal ganglia, integrates cortical and thalamic glutamatergic inputs with dopaminergic afferents from the substantia nigra pars cornpacta. The combination of dopamine and glutamate strongly modulates molecular and cellular properties of striatal neurons and the strength of corticostriatal synapses. These actions are performed via intracellular signaling networks, containing several intertwined feedback loops. Understanding the role of dopamine and other neuromodulators requires the development of quantitative dynamical models for describing the intracellular signaling, in order to provide precise unambiguous descriptions and quantitative predictions. Building such models requires integration of data from multiple data sources containing information regarding the molecular interactions, the strength of these interactions, and the subcellular localization of the molecules. Due to the uncertainty, variability, and sparseness of these data, parameter estimation techniques are critical for inferring or constraining the unknown parameters, and sensitivity analysis evaluates which parameters are most critical for a given observed macroscopic behavior. Here, we briefly review the modeling approaches and tools that have been used to investigate biochemical signaling in the striatum, along with some of the models built around striatum. We also suggest a future direction for the development of such models from the, now becoming abundant, high-throughput data.

  • Connective segmentation generalized to arbitrary complete lattices.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Mathematical Morphology and Its Applications to Image and Signal Processing. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Berlin: Springer. ; , s. 61-72
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Summary: We begin by defining the setup and the framework of connective segmentation. Then we start from a theorem based on connective criteria, established for the power set of an arbitrary set. As the power set is an example of a complete lattice, we formulate and prove an analogue of the theorem for general complete lattices. Secondly, we consider partial partitions and partial connections. We recall the definitions, and quote a result that gives a characterization of (partial) connections. As a continuation of the work in the first part, we generalize this characterization to complete lattices as well. Finally we link these two approaches by means of a commutative diagram, in two manners.
