    • Rather than dealing exclusively with the Gottesbild (including, for instance, a discussion of anthropomorphic portrayals of YHWH) or the Menschenbild (including a discussion of, for instance, syntheticor theomorphic aspects of biblical anthropology), this study focuses on the relation between human supplicants and YHWH, as expressed in the Psalms. My point of departure is the observation that this relation typically is depicted asanalogous to a relation between two (human) persons with body and soul (or: mind). More precisely, I examine and compare the use of a certain type of vocabulary in the Psalms: lexemes denoting differentbody parts, as well as words denoting various aspects of a person’s inner qualities (“mind”, “soul”, “heart”, etc).

  • Cult and Temple in the Minor Prophets
  • 2021
  • In: The Oxford Handbook of the Minor Prophets. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 9780190673208 ; , s. 117-129
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article explores cult-related topics in the Twelve from several different angles. In the first part, the books within this anthology are treated separately. The analysis aims at assessing each writing’s perspective on temples and priests, as well as on various forms of cultic practice, with a particular emphasis on sacrificial worship. It is shown that some books attest to a temple-centered worldview, whereas others evince little or no interest in cultic matters. The concluding part discusses patterns and tendencies within the Twelve as a whole, based on the preceding analysis of individual books. New approaches to the study of cult-related passages in the prophetic literature are outlined. It is argued that the traditional (pro-)cultic // anti-cultic dichotomy needs to be replaced by other types of categorizations.

  • Has God Left the Building? : Prophetic Perspectives on Divine (In)accessibility
  • 2021
  • In: La Maison de Dieu / Das Haus Gottes. - Tübingen : Mohr Siebeck. - 9783161610080 - 9783161610806 ; , s. 47-58
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In the Hebrew Bible/ Old Testament, the temple is often referred to as the deity’s “house”. This vocabulary evokes the notion that the deity is present or available in his sanctuary/dwelling, analogously to a human being in his/her home. Hence, worshipers are encouraged to seek God precisely there, in the temple. At the same time, however, several biblical texts problematize or relativize the idea that YHWH was permanently accessible in (or, as it were, tied or confined to) his temple. This article explores the theme of divine (in)accessibility in some prophetic texts, with a special focus on Hosea 5:15 and Amos 4:4-5. It includes a survey of previous scholarship.
