  • Bibliometrics : Use and Abuse in the Review of Research Performance
  • 2014
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Over recent decades, the strong expansion of the number of researchers, the even stronger growth in the number of publication outlets, and managerial expansion have put heavy pressure on the peer-review system. Bibliometrics, which have been made possible by information technology, have increasingly become the yardstick for quality, a development which has been widely criticized by researchers. Biased meauring systems seemed to replace quality judgements, and the multiplication of evaluation work is even said to hamper scientific progress. In this volume, specialists from various disciplines criticize the mechanical use of uniquely metric assessment methods, which all have inherent systematic biases, and plead for the use of multidimensioned tools. This book is based on the presentations and discussions at a symposium that was arranged jointly by the Academia Europaea and the Wenner-Gren Foundations and held in Stockholm in late May 2013. • Corporate Governance in Action : Regulators, Market Actors and Scrutinizers
  • 2017. - 1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over time we have seen large corporations, in many cases with multinational operations, begin to play an increasingly significant role in modern society. This in turn has put the governance of these corporations into focus. Against the above background, Corporate Governance in Action helps provide a framework for examining corporate governance through a focus provided by external pressures on large corporations. It also brings together the approach of economics and finance with theories in organisation studies, such as aspects of resource dependency theory. This framework takes into consideration not only the market relations of modern corporations but also their dependence on regulators and different kind of scrutinizers. This thoughtful book is a complete research guide which provides a new understanding and applicable framework for advanced students, academics and researchers in the area of corporate governance and the related disciplines.

  • From Books to MOOCs? : Emerging Models of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
  • 2016
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Massive open online courses (MOOCs), which first appeared in the USA in 2008, have, of late, been hyped in the higher education space, and have evolved substantially world-wide in the last few years. In view of the fact that past applications of technological tools in education have not redeemed the high expectations for innovation, an interesting question is whether this latest development in the use of ICT will fundamentally change and improve higher education. A particularly important issue concerns how and to what degree it will have an impact on policies and practices of learning and teaching in higher education institutions. In this volume, researchers in the field of educational technology, MOOC developers and users critically analyse and discuss the current state-of-the-art from different perspectives. In addition, the volume presents views on possible future developments and influences of open and flexible digital learning and teaching. This book is based on the presentations and discussions at a symposium held in Stockholm in late May 2015, arranged jointly by the Academia Europaea and the Wenner-Gren Foundations

  • Internationalization in Higher Education and Research : Perspectives, Obstacles, Alternatives
  • 2024. - 1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This volume is the outcome of an Academia Europaea conference in Uppsala in the spring of 2022. After an introudction by the editor to the topic and the volume, Hans de Wit, Simon Marginson and Ellen Hazelkorn provide perspectives on internationalization. In a second part Ravit Mizrahi-Shtelman and Gili Drori, Marijk van der Wende, Mette Ginnerskov-Dahlberg and Karen Valentin, elaborate on obstacles to internationalization such as language, security concerns, barriers in labour markets and climate effects. In a following third part, Robert J. Coelen; Ashley Gunter, Markus Roos Breines, F. Melis Cin and Purvati Rahuram, and Christine T. Ennew discuss three alternative modes of internationalization: internationalization at home, distance education and branch campuses. A final chapter by the editor draws conclusions from the earlier chapters and provides some thoughts for the future.

  • Missions of Universities : Past, Present, Future
  • 2020. - 1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book provides an analysis of university missions over time and space. It starts out by presenting a governance framework focusing on the demands on universities set by regulators, market actors and scrutinizers. It examines organizational structures, population development, the fundamental tasks of universities, and internal governance structures. Next, the book offers a discussion of the idea and role of universities in society, exploring concepts such as autonomy and universality, and the university as a transformative institute. The next four chapters deal with the development of universities from medieval times, through the Renaissance, towards the research universities in the nineteenth century in Europe and the United States. The following five chapters analyse recent developments of increasing external demands manifested through evaluations, accreditations and rankings, which in turn have had effects on the organization of universities. Topics discussed include markets, managers, globalization, consumer models and competition. The book concludes by a discussion and analysis of the future challenges of universities.
