  • Origen’s References to Heracleon : A Quotation-Analytical Study of the Earliest Known Commentary on the Gospel of John
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study of Origen’s references to the second-century author Heracleon addresses two problems in previous research: Scholars have regularly presumed that every statement Origen attributes to Heracleon is equivalent to a verbatim quotation, and that Heracleon’s beliefs conform to those described in heresiological sources. The study develops a method of quotation analysis that uses variations in Origen’s attribution formulas to categorize the almost two hundred references as “verbatim quotations,” “summaries,” “explanatory paraphrases,” or “mere assertions.” The more trustworthy references are used to reconstruct Heracleon’s interpretations within a context given by the literature to which he refers himself, including the Gospel of John, a Synoptic gospel tradition similar to the Gospel of Matthew, a collection of Pauline epistles, and the Preaching of Peter. The views exhibited in Heracleon’s comments are compared to those used by Origen to categorize his exegetical opponents. The study identifies over fifty quotations from Heracleon and seventy summaries of his interpretations, and concludes that the views of the heterodox and “those who bring in the natures” are more likely to be inferred by Origen than expressed by Heracleon.

  • Försoningens mellanrum : en analys av Daphne Hampsons och Rita Nakashima Brocks teologiska tolkningar
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall purpose of this thesis is to illuminate and critically evaluate Christian theology of atonement and redemption, in order to contribute to contemporary theology of atonement and redemption. The purpose is reached through an analysis of the work of two contemporary feminist theologians; Daphne Hampson and Rita Nakashima Brock. Hampson has formulated a sharp post-Christian position. Brock has distinguished herself through her critique of the Christian concept of atonement and through her contributions to reconciliation and redemption. Both Daphne Hampson and Rita Nakashima Brock argue that Christian atonement-theology, primarily the so called objective model, is hurtful to children and victims of abuse and violence. They both argue that theological language is not innocent. At the same time, they illustrate broken relationships, sufferings, and problems they want to change, give theological interpretations of how that change is to take place and present methodologies on how to reach reconciliation between human beings and God as well as between human beings. In two steps I undertake a critical analysis of content and presuppositions in Daphne Hampson’s and Rita Nakashima Brock’s theologies of atonement and redemption. In the first step, I describe Hampson’s and Brock’s critique of Christian atonement-theology. I analyze their theological critique and theological construction in a model "from-transition-to". My critical analysis focuses especially on internal consistency. In the second part, the analysis of presuppositions, I explain basic principles upon which they shape their theology. The analysis is made up by the analytical concepts; theoretical arguments of knowledge, understandings of faith, and the position of the subject. I also analyze other essential concepts out of which gender is one.In the last chapter I present my own constructive contribution, structured by content and presuppositions. I argue that theology is both a critical and constructive discipline. In the content-response I discuss images of God, the tragic, the cross, and the hope. In the presuppositions-response I discuss the concept "space-in-between". In conclusion I propose that theology of atonement/redemption is shaped between post and Christian. I argue that space-in-between-perspectives are necessarily experimental and critical, a space on the border where marginalized voices are to be included.

  • Predikantskap och församling : Sex fallstudier av en ecklesial baspraktik inom svensk frikyrklighet fram till 1960-talet
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to discuss the ecclesial character of preacherchip, and to present a deeper understanding of it as a fundamental expression of being church. The underlying hypothesis is that different kinds of preachership are creating different kinds of ecclesial communities. And vice versa: Various kinds of ecclesial communities are creating different kinds of preachership . The discussion is related to six ecclesiological case studies of preachership within the Free Church traditions in Sweden. The preachers are F. O. Nilsson (1809–1881), the founder of the first Baptist congregation in Sweden; P. P. Waldenström (1838–1917), theologian and the leader of the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden; Nelly Hall (1848–1916), travelling preacher and missionary in the Holiness Movement in Sweden; Hj. Danielson (1881–1954), Baptist minister in Stockholm and one of the first preachers on the radio; L. Pethrus (1884–1974), minster in Filadelfiakyrkan in Stockholm and the leader of the Swedish Pentecostal Movement; C. G. Hjelm (1903–1965), travelling Pentecostal Baptist minister and a popular preacher on casette tapes. Different elements in the act of preaching – sermon, listener, preacher and situation – are revealed and analysed in the case studies. At the end of each case study the various elements are comprehended in an ecclesial practice, here named preachership (cf. leader – leadership, episkopos – episkopé). This concept of preachership transcends traditional understandings of ministries in the churches. Preachership as a result of the analysis is used to discover operative ecclesiologies in the communites, formed and integrated by preachership. The thesis shows that there has been an unprecedented multitude of ecclesiologies within the Free Church traditions in Sweden. The Church has a fundamental communicative charachter, and in one sense the Church arises from listening. The sign and instrument for this is an ecclesial practice – preachership.

  • Av denna världen? : Emil Gustafson, moderniteten och den evangelikala väckelsen
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between evangelicalism and modernity with the Swedish holiness preacher Emil Gustafson (1862–1900) as a case. This is achieved by comparing Gustafson’s spirituality with Charles Taylor’s characterization of modernity. The investigation identifies five central themes in Gustafson’s spirituality: conversion, calling, suffering, sanctification, and spiritual experience. With regard to these themes paral-lels with modernity are noted. For example, the analysis shows that modern individualism influenced Gustafson’s view of conversion, and that instrumental rationality informed his evaluations of his own work as a preacher. But there are also instances where he distanced himself from modernity. He did not embrace a modern optimistic anthropology, or the view of suffering as purely negative. It is concluded that Gustafson is neither anti-modern, nor identical to Taylor’s depiction of modernity. He represents one kind of modernity. One that is theocentric rather than anthropo-centric. In order to uphold this theocentric character Gustafson’s opposition to the basic struc-ture of modernity had to be grounded in social practices. For instance, his negative anthropol-ogy was grounded in the revival-meeting where outsiders were called to repent and rely on God rather than themselves. Based on the results from this study it is suggested that evangelicalism should be inter-preted as neither in conflict with modernity, nor in continuity with it, but rather as a kind of modernity. There are multiple modernities, and evangelicalism is one of them.

  • Liberation of the Ecclesia : The Unfinished Project of Liturgical Theology
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation is a critical study of the paradigm of Liturgical Theology. Focus in this systematic inquiry has been on the Russian school with the focal point in the works of Alexander Schmemann, who was active in the late 20th century. The main question of the thesis concerns the relation between theory and practice in Liturgical Theology.                      It is claimed that the relation between theory and practice corresponds to the relation between ritual action and communicative action. The former concerns the identity founded on the unavoidable alterity immanent in life, but also transcending life through a holistic encounter with life, which enables us to express a holistic attitude to life and the entire world. The latter concerns the equally unavoidable rationalization of life which gives rise to a continuous atomization of life through science and the process of acquiring facts and data.                      The thesis makes use of different theories for the reaching of an explanatory theory in connection to theory and practice. Foremost the Theory of Communicative Action in the works of Jürgen Habermas and the re-interpretation of disclosure by Nikolas Kompridis is used. It is claimed tthat ritual action is connected to a primary disclosure attached to otherness with the intention of revealing the identity of the Ecclesia. Without identity, we are left with a never-ending debate and a continuous atomization where every answer exponentially provokes more questions. Communicative action then is connected with a secondary co-disclosure with the intention for the reaching of mutual understanding, making subjects accountable and responsible. Without communicative action we are bound on a long walk into the never ending sea of being. The missionary imperative in the Ecclesia is dependent on the co-existence of ritual action and communicative action.

  • Lokal kyrklig identitet : En studie av implicit ecklesiologi med exemplet Svenska kyrkan i Flemingsberg
  • 2009
(Summary: Local Church Identity – a Study of Implicit Ecclesiology with the Example of the Church of Sweden in Flemingsberg) The focus of this thesis is the concrete identity of the church. The study has been conducted within the church of Sweden in a parish in a southern Stockholm suburb. The aim of the thesis is to gain knowledge of how the identity of the Church of Sweden is manifested at a local level in a suburban context and to develop an ecclesiological approach for conducting such a study. The overall ecclesiological approach of the study is defined as a theologically reflective and abductive. The church is understood as a concrete historical and social agent in the light of God’s presence and therefore both theology and social theory is needed in studying its identity. The approach is abductive in the sense that the study process can be seen as a continuing dialogue between the theoretical reflections and the establishment of empirical material. The study is conducted within an ecclesiological framework, and the concept implicit ecclesiology is central. Implicit ecclesiology is defined as an understanding of what it is to be church that is illuminated by applying a theoretical perspective on expressions of the concrete church. In the thesis the implicit ecclesiology is illuminated by using a theological understanding of the identity of the church and theories on organizational identity. To analyze the material from the ecclesiological field-study in the parish a theoretical model for analysis is developed. The purpose of the model is to make it possible to analyze and describe what kind of social body that is manifested in the material. An approach that draws on Niklas Luhmanns’ theory of organizations as social systems is used. Out of that theory two main concepts are defined: self-descriptions and identity-structures. The concepts of practice, identity-space, strategy and tactics are also added to the model to reveal concrete expressions of the social body and telos it is striving towards. The analysis of the material gives a rather complex picture of the social body and the ecclesiology implicit in its manifestations. The analysis of the self-descriptions used by the local church show that, to a large extent, a rather narrow social body is described, consisting mainly of employees and the local church council. Three identity-structures are also revealed that in a significant way form the social body: one around the employees, one in relation to worship and a third in relation to the geographical borders of the parish. Implicit in the result of the analysis is an understanding of Christ as being present in the world where a fundamental relational pattern of the incarnation liberates people to a community with one another and with God. The analysis shows how this, by the church, is understood to be embodied in a special way in the liturgy of the worship. Without this embodiment of the relational pattern of the incarnation in the social body of the church, Christ would not be present in the world. There is, then, an implicit understanding of the concrete church as being an instrument for God’s presence in the world through Christ.

  • Jesus and Purity Halakhah : Was Jesus Indifferent to Impurity?
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • At the end of the Second Temple period, ritual purity came to play an increasing role in Jewish society. Purity laws were interpreted and expanded, and sources of impurity were generally avoided by many. Signs of that development are discussed in this study and put forward as arguments for an expansionist trend, gaining in influence and support from the common people. Jesus’ attitude to impurity is traced against this historical background. The (in)famous history of historical Jesus-research necessitates a conscious choice of method. The traditional focus on sayings material and criteria of authenticity is modified; narrative traditions with implicit purity issues are appealed to, and extra-canonical traditions are included. The main areas examined are the most important "fathers" of impurity: "leprosy" (skin diseases), genital discharges and corpse-contamination. Jesus is found to have acted in ways easily understood as indifference to these types of impurity. His behaviour is shown on several points to clash with current purity halakhah and dominant expansionist ideals. In an attempt to interpret his actions within the Jewish context and culture of the Second Temple period, three explanatory models are provided. Jesus’ attitude is seen as part of a moral trajectory in Judaism. It is understood as a response to a regional, Galilean dilemma. It is viewed in a power perspective as an expression of Jesus’ eschatological struggle against demonic evil. The result is that Jesus may be understood as operating within the purity paradigm of his time, yet pushing it to the breaking point, at least in the eyes of some. Such a reconstruction makes subsequent developments intelligible, in which various Christian currents drew conflicting conclusions. The function and effect of purity laws change with time, however. While they are irrelevant to most modern people, those looking to Jesus’ behaviour for some sort of guidance may find contemporary analogies.

  • Vilsenhetens epidemiologi : en religionspsykologisk studie i existentiell folkhälsa
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The existential dimension has gained importance in health studies in the last decades (Moreira-Almeida & Koenig, 2006; DeMarinis, 2008). Little Swedish research exists in this area. A pilot study was conducted in a suburban Stockholm, Church of Sweden parish. Research question was: “How does the existential dimension of health, understood as the ability to create and maintain a functional meaning-makings system, affect the person’s self-rated health and quality of life?” Theoretical framework included: health research focusing the existential dimension; public health through psychology of religion; and, object-relations theory. The mixed-methods format included semi-structured interviews, and surveys: 1) on meaning-making, and 2) Swedish pilot translation of WHOQOL-SRPB (self-rated health and quality of life including spirituality, religiousness and personal beliefs). Central results showed a positive relation between the existential health dimension and: overall ratings of physical, mental, social, and environmental health (p = .008); the overall existential health dimension and mental health (p = .008); and, social health (p = .046) and, the combined health items “How do you feel?” and “How satisfied are you with your health?” (p = .001). These results find support in WHO’s health perspective, and are linked to DeMarinis’ health dimensions and Winnicott’s understanding of potential space. Health dimensions: physical, mental, social, ecological and existential, are closely interlinked. The existential dimension is important through interaction with the others, and through its function as an autonomous health dimension. The study underlines the need for – and offers a culturally-tested method and model to explore existential needs in this secularized context.

  • On the Ethics of External States in Peacebuilding : A Critical Study of Justification
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Even the most obvious actions require justification. The need for justification of peacebuilding involvements is always present. This thesis argues that justification is particularly needed when there is a prevalent power asymmetry between an external state and a host community. The dissertation addresses how the attempts of states to justify their engagement in peacebuilding should be evaluated in the light of justification theory. The study’s research questions are addressed by developing a theoretical framework based on justification theory that is combined with empirical case studies. As a result, the starting-point for this dissertation is both descriptive and normative. It builds upon and develops the theory of justification offered by Rainer Forst, by testing Forst’s formal criteria of reciprocity and generality on two case studies, the Republic of South Africa and the Russian Federation. The thesis attempts to scrutinize the role played by the justifications made by external states engaged in peacebuilding. The focus on how Russia and South Africa view, act, and try to justify their peacebuilding efforts, serves to further nuance our theoretical understanding of the justification of external states in peacebuilding processes. The study is exploring which justification strategies are being used and how. By combining ethical analysis with empirical research and by building on an analysis of the case studies, the study presents two typologies of the attempts at justification which Russia and South Africa make in their foreign policy discourse. In order to accomplish this, the thesis uses different methods, including case studies, expert interviews, and document analysis. This study is written within the critical discipline of social ethics. By making a critical analysis of the official Russian and South African foreign policy discourses on peace engagements, this dissertation aims to contribute to existing literature both empirically and theoretically. The analysis shows that Forst’s formal criteria are useful, but not sufficient, to analyse states’ justificatory attempts. The study aims to contribute both to our understanding of Russian and South African engagements in peacebuilding processes abroad, as well as justification of peacebuilding and the role of ethics and morality in foreign policy generally.
