  • Agents secrets : Le public dans la construction interactive de la représentation théâtrale
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present study focusses on the theatre audience, and on its’ role in the maintenance of the theatrical situation. Using video-recorded performances of relatively naturalistic, modern dramas, the study examines the behaviour of the audience in relation to the unfolding of stage events. Such behaviour is described through close inspection of the sounds the audience produces, consisting primarily of coughing, throat-clearing, and laughter. The study contributes to the growing body of research surrounding ethnomethodological conversation analysis (CA). CA methods are used to analyse not only an audience’s overt reactions to stage events, but also the actions occurring outside these relatively short-lived phenomena in the context of a theatre performance. It is demonstrated that members of the audience refrain from making « vocal noise » during the verbal interaction of actors, and some of the resources used to achieve this end are described. These include the interpretation of the emerging dialogue, of the relative positioning of actors and of the actors’ use of gesture. Members of the audience are observed making vocal noise around possible completions in the sequence of ongoing stage actions, a placing which seems to make it maximally unobtrusive. Furthermore, the audience’s laughter is described. It is argued that members of the audience negociate collective moments of laughter with each other and with the actors. In doing so, the audience displays a sensitive awareness of the other members of the audience and the performers on stage. It is finally suggested that vocal noise on one hand and laughter on the other are differently placed in relation to an emerging action. This relative placing seems to indicate their producers’ different orientations to these actions, according to which vocal noise is to be hidden and laughter to be taken as an overt reaction.

  • Dans les marges de la science : Esquisse d’un projet comparatiste sur le rôle de l’auteur à partir de quelques textes de Strindberg, Zola et Joyce
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Trans. - : Presses de la Sorbonne Nouvelle. - 1778-3887. ; :15:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article deals with the transformation of the role of the author in works by Strindberg, Zola and Joyce. In their works, fiction and literature in a broad sense (role of author, critic and literary text) are related to and compared with science and scientific methods. Even though the scientific backgrounds presented by the authors differ from each other, some common discursive hierarchies and strategies emerge in the comparison of the texts. Above all, the authors try to create a space, a margin, within the scientific vision of the world where the subjectivity of the author and the literary text still has a role to play. Especially three texts have been studied: The Study of Languages (1898/99?) by Joyce, Sensations Détraquées (1893) by Strindberg and Le Roman experimental (1880) by Zola. An important point of the article is how the elaboration of the role of the author in relation to the scientist and scientific practices is a recurrent theme in many different works by these authors. The goal of the article has only been to outline this cluster of problems in view of a more elaborate future study.

  • L'écriture de l'enfance et l'enfance de l'écriture: Nathalie Sarraute et l'autobiographie
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Samlaren. - Uppsala : Svenska Litteratursällskapet. - 0348-6133 .- 2002-3871. ; 133, s. 287-303
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • "The Writing of Childhood and the Childhood of Writing: Nathalie Sarraute and Autobiography"This article deals with the autobiographical childhood narrative Enfance (1983) written by Nathalie Sarraute (1900–1999). More specifically, it attempts to analyze the two directions Sarraute criticism took when assessing this particular work in relation to the reading of it as the story of becoming a writer. On the one hand, the narrative was seen as the beginning of something new in Sarraute's writing, on the other as a sophisticated continuation of her exploration of tropisms. Some critics contend that the writing performed by the childhood "I" of the narrative should be seen as the first steps towards becoming a writer, while others aim to show how the child's experiences of writing function as counter examples of how to write according to Sarraute, and thus could not be seen as representing a vocational story. The aim of this article is to show that Sarraute's childhood narrative is the story of un-learning how to write traditionally and an intricate reflection on the function and conception of autobiographical writing.
