    • The Swedish king Gustav III (1746-92) and his subject, the naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828), can both, in different respects, be characterized as cosmopolitans. Gustav III, born in Stockholm of German parents – his mother was the sister of Frederick the Great – belonged to an aristocratic European elite for which French was the common language and Enlightenment culture was a given reference. As a sovereign, though, he had to assert the interests of his realm on the international arena. He waged war against his first cousin Catherine II, born a German princess. His main achievement, in retrospect, is the creation of cultural institutions which successfully fused Swedish patriotism and European, chiefly French cosmopolitanism: the Royal Opera in Stockholm and the Swedish Academy. – The Linnaean naturalist Thunberg was born in a modest Swedish home, but his studies in medicine and botany in Uppsala and Paris enabled him to travel in Dutch service to secluded Japan via Southern Africa and Java. He brought back unique African and Asian collections to Europe, which helped him secure the Linnaean chair at Uppsala University. As a professor there, he kept a vast correspondence network over several continents. During his voyage, his achievements in Dutch territories in Africa and Asia were conditioned by his acceptance of the colonial infrastructure. In independent Japan, meanwhile, he was able to set up a system of mutual exchanges with members of Japanese intellectual elites.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To enhance his image in Sweden and abroad, the Swedish king Gustav III (1746-1792) launched a ‘medallic history’ - a history in medals - of his reign. His project was modelled on the ‘histoire métallique’ of the French king Louis XIV, but the relationships between the Swedish and the French project have not been studied earlier. Like that of Louis XIV, the Swedish venture included both actual medals in gold and silver, and a luxurious folio book of engravings of the medals. The typographical layout of the book derived from its French model, and Gustav III, like the ‘Sun King’, aimed at a top quality product using the latest technological innovations. As regards the ideological message of the medals, the Swedish project, like the French one, glorified the ruling dynasty, but it conveyed the image of a modern, enlightened reformer in the spirit of the French ‘Philosophes’ of the 18th century. Whereas Louis XIV’s ‘histoire métallique’, for example, hailed the triumph of Catholicism over Protestant ‘heresy’, Gustav III’s project hailed the introduction of religious toleration, though also stressing that the Swedish king was a faithful Protestant. Gigantic sums were invested into the Swedish medallic history, but financial difficulties proved insuperable: only part of the medals were coined, and the book was not published in Gustav III’s lifetime. Sweden in the late 18th century was no longer a great European power as it had been in the days of Louis XIV.

  • Ingår i: La Révolution francaise, Cahiers de l'Institut d'histoire de la Révolution francaise, http://journals.openedition.org/lrf/1863. - Paris : Institut d'histoire de la Révolution francaise. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish botanist and physician Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) was the only European scientist who visited and published his observations of Japan in the eighteenth century. His works were translated into several European languages. The first part of this article is devoted to the diffusion of his scientific monographs in Latin (including the Flora Japonica, 1784) and that of his articles, published either in Latin or vernacular languages. The second part is devoted to the European translations of his travel account, concentrating on the French versions. A series of manuscript letters to Thunberg from his publisher in Paris during the French Revolution, the bookseller Benoît Dandré (or d’André), makes it possible to follow in detail the genesis of the French 1796 edition. The third part briefly presents a Japanese adaptation of Thunberg’s Flora Japonica, Itō Keisuke’s Taisei Honzō Meiso (1829), which made the Swedish botanist famous in Japan.
