    • During works of the reconstruction of the book collection from the Jesuit College in Poznań the researchers came across three volumes with characteristic Flemish Panel-Stamped decorated bindings, in which designs were stamped into the leather cover by a block, into which the image had been carved or incised. The bindings were made in Leuven, in bookbinding workshops that placed their monograms of the following letter combinations: "IP" (Jacob Pandelaert?) and "IB" (Jacob Bathen). Two of the volumes are now kept in the University Library in Uppsala, while one of them is held in Poznań University Library. These are bookbinding blocks that in total include 11 works. The present article presents the history of the three volumes. Following an analysis of the numerous marginal notes included in the volumes it was possible to establish that the first owner of the volumes had been the writer, humanist and reformer Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski (ca 1502-1572). Modrzewski had most probably purchased the volumes in Leuven in September 1549. Subsequently, the books were taken over by Stanisław Karnkowski (1520-1603), who donated them to Poznań-based Jesuits. This article contributes to the knowledge on the private book collection of Modrzewski. A particular attention should be given to the editions of the works by Piotr Ramus (Pierre de la Ramée) and Joachim Perion, specifically collected for a purpose by Modrzewski.

  • 2015
  • In: Teksty drugie. - 0867-0633. ; :2, s. 353-380
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Despite the recent consolidation of “critical studies on men” or “masculinity studies”, critics have pointed to a theoretical deficit. Berggren discusses how critical studies on men could benefit from engaging with contemporary post-structuralist feminist theory and feminist phenomenological accounts of subjectivity. His argument proceeds through a reading of John Stoltenberg as a post-structuralist feminist and of Victor Seidler as a feminist phenomenologist. He suggests that the study of masculinity can benefit from both traditions. Drawing in particular on Sara Ahmed’s innovative combination of poststructuralism and phenomenology, Berggren suggests an understanding of masculinity as “sticky”.

    • Crime novels from Scandinavia are commercial successes all over the world. In Sweden, the dominance of the crime genre on the book market is even more significant. According to Swedish book trade magazine Svensk Bokhandel, twelve of the top twenty books in the bestseller charts of fiction in 2010, were domestic crime novels. This has started intensive debates, where crime novels are blamed for out-competing other genres. Domestic crime fiction has had a commanding position of the commercial side of Swedish publishing business in the 2000s, but this has not always been the case. When did this literary genre-takeover take place? How did it take place? How can it be explained? Even though some research concerning Scandinavian crime fiction has been carried out over the last couple of years, no one has mapped the book market phenomenon as such. This article aims to fill this gap by offering a neutral and extensive description on the role and position of crime fiction in Swedish publishing between 1977 and 2010.
