  • Localizing Self on the Internet; Designing for Genius Loci in a Global Context
  • 2002
  • In: Social Thinking. - : MIT Press. - 0262042045
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The chapter begins with a sketchy overview of what I see as the major shift during the past century in mainstream social theorizing, and a comparison of this to recent and on-going developments of IT and software practice. These themes are then brought together in a brief personal narrative of experiences from four research and development projects I have been involved in during the past four years. 'Genius loci', interpreted here as 'the spirit of the place', is a metaphor borrowed from architectural discourse and Greek mythology. It is used in this context as an analytical tool for re-conceptualizing the relationship of the user to the development, design and use of public information systems accessible via the Internet. The use of this metaphor, and of the concept of 'strong subjectivity', is a way of exploring if it is possible to objectify and instrumentalize the actions, rather than the actors, in the on-going discourse around human-machine interaction.

  • Mobila tjänster : ett annat sätt att se. Organisationer som pågående aktiviteter och underhåll av relationer
  • 2002
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • As technology is developed and evolves over time in use, research areas focusing on technology, and technology in use, must develop their metaphors, models and figures of thought. Ethnomethodology, the study of how people organize their everyday lives, is a sociological approach that has come to play an important role in research on human-computer interaction (HCI) and computer supported cooperative work (CSCW)in recent years. In this presentation, some examples are given of how detailed studies of people's actions and interactions can be used to problematize current models and figures of thought concerning organizations and the organization of work. What would happen if we focus on relationships and activities, instead of formal representations of hierarchical decision structures? If we see organizations as constantly on-going activities and cultivating of relationships? How might effective computer support be designed for such an organization? The concept of 'accountability', which is central in ethnomethodology, ís used here to discuss new figures of thought and metaphorical models as a basis for developing mobile services.

  • A New Design Method for Broadband Microphone Arrays for Speech Input in Automobiles
  • 2002
  • In: IEEE Signal Processing Letters. - : IEEE. - 1070-9908 .- 1558-2361. ; 9:7, s. 222-224
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A new design method for broadband microphone arrays is presented. Using sequences of calibration signals, the method is able to design finite-impulse response (FIR) filters with specific performance. The method can control and adjust the speech distortion, noise suppression, and echo cancellation directly. It turns out that a significantly shorter filter length can be applied to achieve better overall performance than the least-squares method or the signal-to-noise plus interference method.

  • Mobile services : students as need-finders
  • 2002
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents a way of identifying new and useful mobile services by letting students act as need-finders and developers of services based on their own needs and ideas. It describes the background and outcomes of a course in mobile services given at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) in spring 2002.

  • Waiting Time Quantiles for the Gaussian Voice Traffic Model
  • 2002
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Traffic models with a rate varying according to a Gaussian distribution are commonly used to evaluate statistical multiplexing in telecommunication systems. The superposition of a large number of homogeneous Markovian On-Off sources asymptotically approaches an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process (OUP) which represents a Gaussian process with exponential autocorrelation function. The workload analysis for a multiplexer with OUP input leads to a simple and clearly structured dependence of waiting time quantiles on system and quality of service parameters. Semi-Markovian fitting procedures as well as the fluid flow method provide independent analysis ap-proaches at an assured accuracy level. The comparison of the corresponding waiting time quantiles shows the suitability of assuming traffic to be Gaussian already for a moderate number of traffic sources.

  • Om beroende av motoriserade transporter för vardagens inköp : tillgänglighet till handel i Karlshamn och Ronneby 1980-1998.
  • 2002
  • Licentiate thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This graduate thesis analyses how the accessibility to shopping changed from 1980 through 1998 in two Swedish population centres, Karlshamn and Ronneby. The study focuses on how the distances to shopping changed over time, if the resident, due to the distances, were dependent on motorised transport for everyday shopping and if the accessibility to shopping differed between the two population centres. The type of stores studied were grocery stores, clothing stores, home equipment stores, speciality stores and petrol stations. The accessibility measures used were two home-based place accessibility measures, one simple distance measure, and one cumulative-opportunity measure. The analyses were carried out using ArcView Network Analyst and the Shortest Network Path (SNP). The thesis concludes that the residents in both Karlshamn and Ronneby from 1980 through 1998 were dependant largely on motorised transport for their everyday shopping. The accessibility was generally better in Karlshamn than in Ronneby. Municipal policy for establishing stores is likely one of several factors behind the differences between the two population centres. How the accessibility was changed over time was due to the type of store, the population centre and the number of stores that was expected to be within reach. The changes in distances during the period was mainly explained by retail changes and not by changes in the resident housing.

  • A framework for systemic coordination in open computational systems
  • 2002
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The material presented in this paper is focused on the characteristics of open computational systems and, in particular, the issue of coordinating behavior in such systems, i.e. systemic coordination. Firstly, we introduce a conceptual framework for characterizing systemic coordination at different levels abstraction. Secondly, challenges and opportunities of this framework is outlined as a matter of exploiting a Service-oriented layered architecture for communicating entities (SOLACE) in combination with a particular coordination model (TuCSoN). In the context of systems engineering, we consider SOLACE and TuCSoN to be examples of the basic tools required for support of systemic coordination, i.e., the continuous process of construction and observation of open computational systems and their evolving interaction space. Finally, we outline the impact of these tools on empirical aspects of systemic coordination.

  • A methodological perspective on engineering of agent societies
  • 2002
  • In: Engineering societies in the agents' world, Lecture notes in artificial intelligence. - : Springer verlag. ; , s. 10-24
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We propose a new methodological approach for engineering of agent societies. This is needed due to the emergence of the Embedded Internet. We argue that such communication platforms call for a methodology that focuses on the concept of open computational systems, grounded in general system theory, and natural systems from an engineering perspective. In doing so, it stands clear that forthcoming research in this problem domain initially have to focus on cognitive primitives, rather than domain specific interaction protocols, in construction of agent societies.

  • Methodological principles in construction and observation of open computational systems.
  • 2002
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Research and development of information systems for defense and warfare have changed most dramatically during the last decade; from weapons of mass destruction to sustainable systems of services. The involved information systems can be comprised by a wide range of complex, interacting, and proactive services. Consequently, construction and observation of complex multiagent systems is an important issue to pursue. We argue that methodological principles of the involved systems most appropriately can be dealt with in terms of open computational systems. In this paper we therefore introduce the general characteristics of open computational systems and briefly outline a practical case of such systems in a network-centric warfare setting, in order to identify particular issues of the proposed approach and related tools.
