- The arrival of the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq since 2014, alongside the devastating civil war in Syria, was accompanied by the high- scale destruction of the cultural heritage. All of the participants in the armed conflict have played a destructive role in this region. The aspect I will discuss in this paper is Daesh or the Islamic State, and how they are manipulating the world to destroy the heritage using religious labels; they have demolished monuments, art works, mosaics and large statues in the name of God, because this heritage represents polytheism, while at the same time selling archaeological items on the black market helps them to finance their state’s terrorist activities. The example of Palmyra provides relevant data to reveal the real reasons behind the destruction and adds more voices to the international calls to stop trafficking in items coming out of the conflict area.

- El 29 de abril de 2003, ocurrió la peor inundación catastrófica en la historia de la ciudad argentina de Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz. Al poco tiempo, el desastre se convirtió en una cuestión política, ya que se habían realizado graves acusaciones contra las autoridades y tomadores de decisiones con respecto a la negligencia, la corrupción y la falta de preparación para desastres. Surgió un movimiento de protesta demandando tanto la asignación de responsabilidades, como la compensación económica por las pérdidas sufridas por las víctimas. Este artículo analiza el papel de la memoria material y el olvido en el escenario del posdesastre, y más específicamente cómo los diferentes actores sociales en Santa Fe usaron los lugares y los objetos en una contienda por construir un memo-paisaje del desastre. El análisis se basa en etnografía de trabajo de campo translocal y transtemporal realizado en Santa Fe entre 2004 y 2011, y aplica las teorías antropológicas y sociológicas de la memoria a fines de analizar estos procesos.

- El tema del presente número especial el de los eventos críticos, extraordinarios y disruptivos; de los sucesos y situaciones que interrumpen un determinado orden social, ya sean de índole ambiental, tecnológico, financiero, político o social, y que tienen un impacto grande en la sociedad involucrada. Nos proponemos aquí introducir al lector cómo se puede abordar este objeto de estudio desde la antropología social. El problema de los desastres y de las crisis no es de ahora, ni es exclusivo de América Latina. No obstante, en la región han aumentado dramáticamente los impactos de los desastres de origen hidrometeorológico y geológico en el último siglo (BID 2010; UNISDR y Corporación OSSO 2013) y muchos países tienen experiencia histórica y reciente de profundas crisis sociales, políticas y económicas. Son eventos complejos y con un alto impacto social, político y económico que representan un desafío muy grande para las sociedades para gestionar, mitigar y reducir. Como tales, los estudios científicos sobre la problemática son indispensables para comprender tanto causas como efectos y así desarrollar soluciones sostenibles.En este número especial se presentan cuatro artículos que presentan casos empíricos de América Latina, con énfasis en Argentina y Brasil, que demuestran cual puede ser el aporte antropológico para analizar los eventos críticos, antes, durante y después. El número no aspira dar una visión exhaustiva de la antropología de desastres y crisis en América Latina, sino dar cuenta de un campo de investigación en crecimiento en la región que ya está haciendo importantes contribuciones, tanto a los estudios multidisciplinarios de los eventos críticos, como a las políticas de reducción de riesgo y de gestión de crisis y desastres.

- The present article studies the role of education and science in the process of imagining the desired nation in the first two novels by César Duayen, namely, Stella (1905) and Mecha Iturbe (1906). To this end, the analysis focuses on the relations established between Education, Science and Nation as well as on the ways through which the narratives attribute themselves the authority to imagine the nation and realize this imagination in the diegetic world. Within this framework, the tension between the local and the global – or the national and the cosmopolitan – will play a central role, which is also discussed along the essay. Furthermore, it is argued that white as a colour as well as white bodies will be central elements for the conveyance of both the conflicts that the desired nation faces and the ideals that guide it.

- ABSTRACT || In La Anunciación (2007) by María Negroni, a survivor of the Dirty War in Argentina narrates her quest to reconstitute herself as a subject, in exile, thirty years later. Thus, the novel inserts itself in the series of narratives about the memories of the last dictatorship in Argentina. However, at the same time, departing from referentiality, the novel creates obstacles for a mimetic reading. This paper argues that this is achieved through the discussion about art that mainly focuses on the character of Emma, the painter, and on the pictorial tradition of the Annunciation. Nonetheless, this departure from referentiality is by no means complete as the narrative keeps a dialectical relationship with history and memory. Accordingly, this article suggests that the novel puts forward a utopian idea of art that enters in dialogue with the utopian ideals of the revolutionary movements of the 1970s. RESUMEN || En La Anunciación (2007) de María Negroni una sobreviviente de la Guerra Sucia en Argentina narra su intento de volver a constituirse como sujeto en el exilio, treinta años más tarde. A través de esta temática, se inserta en la narrativa argentina de la memoria de la última dictadura. Al mismo tiempo, la novela, desvinculándose de lo referencial, obstaculiza una lectura mimética. El presente trabajo argumenta que esto se logra a través de la discusión sobre el arte, discusión que, principalmente, se nuclea alrededor del personaje de la pintora, Emma, y de la tradición pictórica de la Anunciación. Pero esta desvinculación de ninguna manera es total, sino que se mantiene en una relación dialéctica con la Historia y con la memoria. De ahí, planteamos que, a través esa misma discusión sobre el arte, la narrativa propone una idea utópica de este, que entra en diálogo con las utopías de los movimientos revolucionarios de la década de 1970

- The literary work of María Negroni constantly creates dialogues between genres and media. Focusing on her long poem La jaula bajo el trapo (1991) and her novel La Anunciación (2007), this article aims to analyse how the texts, through the written representation of other media, activate the conative function of language, summoning the reader to take the position of a spectator; that is, to assume the role of the theatre audience when viewing a performance. This reader-audience role will in turn open the possibility of, by a combination of cognitive processes and sensorial perception, getting in touch with those aspects of experience and memory that are never put into words. Through the analysed examples, the article postulates that the texts in question invite to reflect not only on the limitations of language as regards describing experience, but also on the notion of subject and the idea of a unitary subjectivity.

- The article analyses 14 obituaries of men of science that appeared in the journal Boletín Geográfico Argentino between 1889 and 1910. It is argued that together they form a pantheon of memorable bodies that stands out in contrast to other bodies, namely those that, at the same time and by the same men, are being collected for the museums of natural history. The focus of the article lies on how the figure of the scientist is constructed through a series of recurrent themes, such as laboriosity, productivity and devotion to the nation. These, contrasted with other articles in the magazine, help us visualize the practices of power and of knowledge embedded in the genre. The discussion raises questions about the tensions between the private and the public as well as those between the individual and the community. The analysis shows that although the worthiness of a place in the pantheon of memorable men is closely linked to the exercise of violence in the name of a nation and in the name of science, this exercise is silenced at the moment of exhibiting death in the studied obituaries.
