  • High growth Firms, Internationalization and Job Creation in Sweden
  • 1999
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Principal TopicHigh growth firms have shown to be an important factor for creating jobs in the economy at large. It has therefore been an increasing interest in this phenomenon from media, politics and academia. In spite of a large research effort, the knowledge about this phenomenon is still limited because there are few common results regarding the factors of importance for the creation of high growth firms. Some researcher claim that the entrepreneurs’ characteristics and the firms network and microenvironment are important whereas other claim that institutions in society in large are the most important factors. The purpose of this study is to deeper investigate the characteristics of high growth firms and to explore the factors that can explain the development of those firms. As earlier studies about high growth firms in Sweden has shown a strong connection between growth and internationalization, the firms international development will be highlighted.MethodIn an earlier study seven different types of firms were identified based on secondary data. In this second study, deep case studies will be conducted to get a deeper understanding of why these firms grow. Here the elite of the elite of the different types, super growers, will be further investigated. Super growers achieve higher growth in sales, organic employment and total employment than other groups in absolute and relative terms. Super growers were over-represented in young and growing industries, such as the business system industry. Three Swedish companies in that industry are chosen as case companies. Historical and a real time information will be collected. Secondary data and personal interviews will be used. The different cases will be confronted with each other and different theoretical approaches will be confronted with the cases in order to generate new knowledge about high growth firms.ImplicationsThis research intends to have implication for academia, practitioners and policy makers. For academia this explorative research intends to identify which factors that are important to understand the phenomenon of high growth firms. Practitioners and policymakers can learn from these findings and if the intention is to create high growth and job creation, concentrate on actions that will favor that development.

  • Logical Modalities and Multi-Stage Programming
  • 1999
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multi-stage programming is a method for improving the performance of programs through the introduction of controlled program specialization. This paper makes a case for multi-stage programming with open code and closed values. We argue that a simple language exploiting interactions between two logical modalities is well suited for multi-stage programming, and report the results from our study of categorical models for multi-stage languages.

  • Protocol for wireless real-time systems
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 11th Euromicro Conference on Real-Time Systems, 1999. - Los Alamitos, CA : IEEE Computer Society. - 0769502407 ; , s. 168-174
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A protocol and a communication mechanism intended for time and safety critical applications using a radio channel for information transport are considered jointly. The protocol is based on a scheme of retransmissions done on demand within a given time window. Each retransmission is coded with a varying number of redundant symbols. The set of blocks used for retransmission is controlled by two quality-of-service parameters: deadline for the transmission and the probability that the correct decoded message will reach the recipient before this deadline. Analysis of a protocol model indicates that it is possible to transmit time critical information in a mobile wireless system with very low error probabilities in an industrial environment.

  • Localization in changing environments by matching laser range scans
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: 1999 Third European Workshop on Advanced Mobile Robots (Eurobot'99).. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0780356721 ; , s. 169-176
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a novel scan matching algorithm, IDC-S, Iterative Dual Correspondence-Sector, that matches range scans. The algorithm is based on the known Iterative Dual Correspondence, IDC, algorithm which has shown good performance in real environments. The improvement is that IDC-S is able to deal with relatively large changes in the environment. It divides the scan in several sectors, detects and removes those sectors that are changed and matches the scans only using unchanged sectors. IDC-S and other variants of IDC are extensively simulated and evaluated. The simulations show that IDC-S is very robust and can locate in many different kind of environments. We also show that it is possible to effectively combine the existing IDC algorithms with IDC-S, thus obtaining an algorithm that performs very well both in rectilinear as well as nonrectilinear environments, even when changed as much as 65%. © 1999 IEEE.

  • From fever to flu : The rhetoric of reporting Asia in a Swedish business magazine
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: AI & Society. - London : Springer London. - 0951-5666 .- 1435-5655. ; 13:3, s. 235-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper some aspects of the stereotyping of China and Japan are explored by using a sample of articles from a Swedish business magazine. The main objective is to show how stereotypes are adapted to capture new developments in economy and technology. During the years of high hopes for the largest Asian economies, stereotypes proved to be far from timeless and unchanging. Also a large number of metaphors were used to express perceived similarities between East and West, further undermining tradi-tional Western understanding of Asia as inert and eternally different. The recent decline of Japan put an end to this, creating a return to a vocabulary of cultural characterisations and explanations.

  • Genres in Action: Negotiating Genres in Practice
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Thirty-second Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). - Los Alamitos, Calif. : IEEE Computer Society. - 0769500013 ; 5
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present the initial findings of a genre based case study at a large Swedish company, with a record of early use of internal email (1982). The design of the particular email system was closely mapped to the organizational hierarchy. One of our informants kept one week of incoming email messages. We then asked questions about each message and how it related to the work of the informant, and to the organization. Based on the messages and the interviews we clustered the messages in different genres. Most literature of genres of organizational communication has focused on the genres themselves, e.g. email messages constituting different instances of genres. We found however that many messages, rather than being instances of genres, were part of informal conversations. In these conversations, however, it was common to discuss and negotiate which genres where appropriate to use in different situations.

  • Cancer patients' experiences of nurses' behaviour and health promotion activities : a critical incident analysis
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cancer Care. - Oxford : Blackwell Publishing. - 0961-5423 .- 1365-2354. ; 8:4, s. 204-212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patients with head and neck cancer report several disease- and health-related problems before, during and a long time after completed treatment. Nurses have an important role in educating/supporting these patients about/through the disease and treatment so that they can attain well-being. This study describes the cancer patients' experiences of nurses' behaviour in terms of critical incidents after nurses had given them care to promote health. The study had a qualitative, descriptive design and the method used was the critical incident technique. Twenty-one informants from the Nordic countries diagnosed with head and neck cancer were strategically selected. It was explained to the informants what a critical incident implies before the interviews took place; this was defined as a major event of great importance, an incident, which the informants still remember, due to its great importance for the outcome of their health and well-being. The nurses' behaviour was examined, and critical incidents were involved in 208 cases-150 positive and 58 negative ones-the number of incidents varying between three and 20 per informant. The nurses' health promotion activities or lack of such activities based on the patients' disease, treatment and symptoms, consisted of informing and instructing the patients as well as enabling their participation. Personal consideration and the nurses' cognisance, knowledge, competence, solicitude, demeanour and statements of understanding were found to be important. Continuous health promotion nursing interventions were of considerable value for the majority of this group of cancer patients. Oncology nurses could reconfirm and update the care of head and neck cancer patients by including health promotion activities in individual care plans. By more frequent use of health promotion models, such as the empowerment model, the nurses could identify and focus on those individuals who needed to alter their Life-style as well as tailor their approach towards these patient by setting goals for well-being and a healthy life-style.
