  • Life situation related to the ICD implantation : self-reported uncertainty and satisfaction in Swedish and US samples
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 1474-5151 .- 1873-1953. ; 1:4, s. 243-251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to describe changes in the life situation related to the ICD implantation of Swedish and US samples with regard to uncertainty and satisfaction. The life situation was measured by reference to the uncertainty caused by the condition and satisfaction with the life situation. Inferential statistics were used to analyse changes within and between the Swedish and US samples. Uncertainty showed a statistically significant difference between the Swedish and US samples before as well as after the ICD implantation. A higher level of uncertainty was indicated for the US sample prior to the ICD implantation and for the Swedish sample following the implantation. In the Swedish sample, satisfaction with life showed a statistically significant difference within the socio-economic domain, indicating a higher degree of satisfaction 3 months after implantation. Satisfaction within the domains of health and functioning, socio-economics and psychological-spiritual showed a statistically significant difference between the Swedish and US samples both before and after ICD implantation, indicating a higher degree of satisfaction in the US sample. The previous study shows that the ICD-patient's life situation is changed after the implantation and that it is necessary to provide the patient with information and education based on their own preconditions. The fact that US sample was investigated at a later stage after ICD implantation than the Swedish sample may have influenced the results of the study.

    • Catrine Brödje, Women's death by drowning. A literary motif at the turn of the century 1900 The picture of a dead woman was a common motif around the previous turn of the century. In the four literary texts that I am studying in this essay, a woman drowns. The texts are Georg Heym's poem "Die Tote im Wasser", Bertolt Brecht's ballad "Vom ertrunkenen Mädchen", Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening and Anna Lenah Elgström's short story "Det sjungande barnet". It is strange that women's death by drowning is a common motif in these four different texts published between 1899 and 1927 in Sweden, Germany and the United States. It may be a coincidence, but the common motif is there and therefore calls for a comparison.Brecht's, Heym's, Chopin's and Elgström's texts are read in the light of the changed gender order, which was a result of the discourse on modernity in the early 1900s, and thereby the different gendered views on the motif women's death by drowning are made visible. The essay will explore the possibility of letting female and male writers establish a dialogue, where both the female and the male voices are heard instead of stopping at the fact that the motif of women's death by drowning becomes solely a male monologue.

  • Rädsla för brott : en undersökning om Ljungbyungdomars rädsla för och erfarenheter av brott
  • 2002
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report presents results regarding fear of crime amongst young people in a small Swedish town, Ljungby. It also considers the experience of violence and other types of crime. A questionnaire was distributed to 320 students in upper secondary school during October 2001. The results from these questionnaires shows that female students more often than male students state that they are worried when they are to walk home alone at night. Nearly 70 % of the women in this study says that they often or sometimes are afraid when they walk home without company. About 90 % of the male students report that they hardly ever feel worried when they walk home alone at night. 41 % of the students state that they sometimes are afraid of crimes. The majority of these students are female. The women state that they are afraid of being raped whilst the men report being afraid of assault. 35 % of the students have been victims of crime. Most of these students report theft. 36 % of these young men and women have been threatened and 24 % of them have been assaulted. The majority in both cases is men. 55 % of the victimized students did not report the incident to the police. The two main accounts for not doing this are the two following; ”it was only a minor crime” and ”the police cannot do anything anyway”.

  • Epitope-specific recognition of type II collagen by rheumatoid arthritis antibodies is shared with recognition by antibodies that are arthritogenic in collagen-induced arthritis in the mouse
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Arthritis & Rheumatology. - : Wiley. - 2326-5191 .- 2326-5205. ; 46:9, s. 2339-2348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To analyze the fine specificity of IgG autoantibodies in sera from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients for type II collagen (CII) epitopes that are arthritogenic in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA), a relevant murine model of RA. METHODS: For enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analysis of conformation-dependent autoantibody binding, recombinant chimeric collagens that harbor the respective CII epitopes as an insertion within the frame of a constant type X collagen triple helix were constructed. In addition, synthetic peptides mimicking the native collagen structures were applied for the first time in the ELISA assessment of humoral CII autoimmunity. RESULTS: The pathogenicity of IgG responses to certain CII determinants in CIA was demonstrated by arthritis development in BALB/c mice upon the combined transfer of 2 mouse monoclonal antibodies specific for precisely mapped conformational CII epitopes (amino acid residues 359-369 [C1(III)] and 551-564 [J1]), whereas antibodies to another epitope (F4) were not arthritogenic. To test whether human autoimmune responses are similarly directed to these conserved CII determinants, serum IgG was analyzed. The prevalence of sera with increased IgG binding to the C1(III) epitope was significantly higher in RA compared with sera from healthy donors or from patients with other rheumatic conditions, e.g., osteoarthritis (OA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), or relapsing polychondritis (RP), whereas levels of antibodies specific for the nonarthritogenic F4 epitope were associated with OA rather than RA. CONCLUSION: Autoimmunity to CII, although detectable in different rheumatic conditions, differs in fine specificity between distinct disease entities. In RA, in contrast to degenerative joint disease, RP, and SLE, autoantibody responses are directed to an evolutionary conserved CII structure that is also targeted by pathogenic autoimmune responses in murine models of arthritis.

  • Managing Complexity and Uncertainty in a Multiproject Environment
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2002 5th International Conference of the International Research Network on Organizing By Projects, Rotterdam. - Rotterdam : Erasmus University.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In complex product development, corporations are running product development in many different projects. The number of more or less interdependent projects creates a web-like multiproject situation. It is characterized by the multitude of relations and dependencies that exist among projects, comprising tasks, people, knowledge, technologies, products, and components. In this paper we present a tentative framework, built on the assumption that complexity creates uncertainty that management has to handle. In multiproject situation the sources of complexity are: functionality of the product, people performing management and engineering work, chosen technology to fulfill functional demands, and shared resources in projects. The dimensions of uncertainty in multiproject situation that management has to handle are: the design of the process to transform functionality and technology to complete product design, organizing people in dual organizational settings basic as well as temporary projects, designing the product architecture based on functionality, technology and project interdependencies. This paper will shed some light on these problems and investigate how a participatory approach based on the Dependence Structure Matrix (DSM) as a process enabling tool can be used to manage complex multiproject situations. The results show that even a single project needs to be understood in the light of the situational and organizational complexity that is the actual outcome of project-based product development work. The analysis shows Who, What, Where, When, and Why coordination and integration need to take place in a complex multiproject situation on different levels of the organization. The process of communication among people creates a mutual understanding of the situational visibility and of why communication is essential in problem solving.

  • Extensive physiological integration in Carex arenaria and Carex disticha in relation to potassium and water availability
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: New Phytologist. - Chichester : Wiley. - 1469-8137 .- 0028-646X. ; 156:3, s. 469-477
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Physiological integration between ramets is beneficial when acquiring heterogeneously distributed resources, and is hypothesized to occur when the benefits of resource sharing outweigh the costs. Our aim was to investigate if resource availability affected physiological integration in Carex arenaria and Carex disticha. Ramet systems were grown in high potassium and high water (K+ W+), high K and low water (K+ W-), or low K and high water (K- W+) for 1 month. Thereafter, water and K transport were traced with erythrosin and rubidium, respectively. Carex arenaria and C. disticha transported erythrosin over seven ramet generations and rubidium throughout the whole ramet system, but C. arenaria exported 20% more rubidium from the labelled shoot than C. disticha. A detailed analysis of subset of plants suggested that C. disticha in low K abundance shared more rubidium than in high K abundance, and that C. arenaria ramets in both K+ W- and K- W+ shared more resources than K+ W+ ramets. We demonstrated long-distance resource transport for K and water in C. arenaria and C. disticha. The distance of integration was not affected by resource availability in C. arenaria or C. disticha, but local concentrations of K showed marked and contrasting responses to nutrient and water treatment in both species.
