- We describe a method to detect knots and faults in wood logs based on microwave measurements and the depolarising properties of wood. The depolarisation is an effect of the anisotropy in the dielectric properties of wood, which is caused by the fibre structure. The measurements are made in the frequency domain where a discrete reflec-tion spectrum is sampled. By transforming the frequency spectrum into the time domain the spatial distribution of the reflections appear. The wave is transmitted in a pure linear polarisation, tilted to 45° For each discrete frequency all available information is measured for the reflected wave and therefore it is possible to calculate the complex polarisation ratio and the state of polarisation which are the quantities containing the most visible information. The measurements are one dimensional and by combining measurements from different directions we create tomographic slice images of the inner structure of a log. Our measurements has showed the possibility to follow the extension of knots in a log using only a iso-surface visualisation. The used equipment is working at low intensity and is therefore virtually harm-less to human beings, furthermore it is portable and can be operated by one single person.

- Transient isotachophoresic (ITP) focusing was used for the on-line analysis of peptides by capillary zone electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (CZE-MS), allowing injection volumes of up to 0.9 microL. A sheath liquid electrospray interface was used with a single quadrupole mass analyzer. First, the technique was applied to the qualitative analysis of a tryptic digest of cytochrome c, resulting in low-background, high-quality spectra. Second, the linear range was investigated by selected ion monitoring (SIM) for a peptidomimetic direct thrombin inhibitor melagatran (Mr 429.5) and two endogenous peptides, substance P (Mr 1348) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (alpha-CGRP; Mr 3806).

- OBJECTIVE: To explore the prevalence of fibromyalgia and chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain in a general population using the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology from 1990.DESIGN: Structured interview and clinical examination, including tender-point count and pain threshold measured with a dolorimeter, of subjects with suspected chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain.SETTING: The general population in south-west Sweden 1995-1996.SUBJECTS: 303 individuals with suspected chronic widespread pain were identified in a previously defined cohort containing 2425 men and women aged 20-74 years. 202 individuals were invited and 147 agreed to participate.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Tenderpoint count, pain threshold and prevalence of chronic widespread pain and fibromyalgia.RESULTS: The prevalence of fibromyalgia was estimated to 1.3% (95% CI 0.8-1.7; n = 2425) and that of all chronic widespread pain to 4.2% (95% CI 3.4-5.0; n = 2425). The mean pain threshold measured with a dolorimeter was lower in subjects with chronic widespread pain (p < 0.01) and correlated with the number of tender points (r = -0.59, p < 0.01) but could not be used to distinguish the subjects with fibromyalgia.CONCLUSION: Compared to other studies, fibromyalgia and chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain seemed to be relatively rare conditions in the south-west of Sweden.

- Sport participation or regular physical activity is often seen as a factor, which leads to better health and well being. Sport also has a social function, as most of the activities are performed together with other people. However, while club sports in Sweden have a stimulating effect on young men, there is a risk that they do not provide enough scope for young women. In particular, early specialization and a high level of seriousness do not suit all young sportswomen. The purpose of this study was to develop a theoretical understanding of the ways in which sport has influenced young women’s lifestyles in terms of their attitudes to physical activity in adult life. The data were collected using strategic interviews and analyzed using the grounded theory method. Based upon the results, young women’s physically active lifestyles varied depending on how they valued their sport in combination with how they handled their sport. Sport was regarded as having a positive effect on health and well-being. This led to the young women studied intending to pursue a physically active lifestyle also in adult life. They enjoyed participating in sport, but not particularly sport with a high level of seriousness or a high level of vigor, which is what characterizes most club sports today.

- This paper presents a description of & reflections about an action research process in a local authority. The focus of the project is on the introduction of a new approach to the rehabilitation of staff. The new approach requires collaboration between departments, which is a great stumbling block in the bureaucratic structure & culture of the organization. The project describes & discusses how, through a gradual joint focusing on the rehabilitation of individuals, the departments concerned became aware of the fact that they were also engaged in a process of rehabilitating the organization. Various aspects of the importance of the relationship between the researcher & the organization are brought to the fore. 1 Appendix, 23 References.

- (From the cover) This book focuses on the enigmatic relationship between men and women, and in particular on the subordination of women by men in the work place. The main points of departure are that subordination is a relational phenomenon and should therefore be approached in a relational context and that the dynamics of relational behaviour primarily evolve through dialogue. The project facilitated and encouraged women and men to engage in more than 100 discussions about their daily relationships, carried out in the context of an intra- and inter-organizational action research project involving 3 organizations: a nuclear power plant, a school district and a postal district in a province of Sweden. The object was to allow for better mutual understanding and respect from an Irigarayan view where a substrate allows men and women to regard each other in their subjectivity without 'reducing the other to the same'. The reflective and analytical nature of this study shows the dynamics of the discussions and their effects on the interpersonal and organizational level.
