  • Consumers on the Internet : ethical and legal aspects of commercialization of personalized nutrition
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Genes & Nutrition. - : Springer. - 1555-8932 .- 1865-3499. ; 8:4, s. 349-355
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Consumers often have a positive attitude to the option of receiving personalized nutrition advice based upon genetic testing, since the prospect of enhancing or maintaining one’s health can be perceived as empowering. Current direct-to-consumer services over the Internet, however, suffer from a questionable level of truthfulness and consumer protection, in addition to an imbalance between far-reaching promises and contrasting disclaimers. Psychological and behavioral studies indicate that consumer acceptance of a new technology is primarily explained by the end user’s rational and emotional interpretation as well as moral beliefs. Results from such studies indicate that personalized nutrition must create true value for the consumer. Also, the freedom to choose is crucial for consumer acceptance. From an ethical point of view, consumer protection is crucial, and caution must be exercised when putting nutrigenomic-based tests and advice services on the market. Current Internet offerings appear to reveal a need to further guaranty legal certainty by ensuring privacy, consumer protection and safety. Personalized nutrition services are on the borderline between nutrition and medicine. Current regulation of this area is incomplete and undergoing development. This situation entails the necessity for carefully assessing and developing existing rules that safeguard fundamental rights and data protection while taking into account the sensitivity of data, the risks posed by each step in their processing, and sufficient guarantees for consumers against potential misuse.

  • Import flows: extraregional linkages stimulating renewal of regional sectors?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Environment & Planning A. - : SAGE Publications. - 0308-518X .- 1472-3409. ; 45:12, s. 2999-3017
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examine the role of regional import flows for renewal of regional industries. The hypothesis is that imports stimulate renewal of local industries by being vehicles for technology diffusion and means by which local firms can exploit advantages of global specialisation. We find robust and positive relationships between high-quality imports and renewal of regional exports, where the latter are measured by the introduction of novel export products of local firms. Connectedness to international markets via import networks appears to be a stimulus for the renewal of regional exports.

  • Pratiques d’engagements collaboratifs : Le rôle de la bibliothèque dans un quartier urbain multiethnique en Suède
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Revue Education & Formation (Mons). - Mons, Belgique : Université de Mons. - 2032-8184. ; :e-300, s. 97-107:e-300, s. 97-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Teachers' interpretation of Bildung in practice: examples from higher education in Sweden and Denmark
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education. - : Association for Learning Development in Higher Education. - 1759-667X. ; :5, s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While higher education is expected to prepare students so they can reflect and act in relation with a changing world, many structural forces instead favour procedural learning. There are fundamental contradictions between the aim of independent thinking and using standardised assessment, as well as between reasoning/speaking as an emancipatory force, and teaching as explanation. Other contradictions exist between holistic and fragmented learning. An important dimension of these contradictions is how we determine who can become a speaker. What are the terms for negotiating meaning? In this article, ways in which university teachers interpret Bildung are investigated through qualitative interviews. Three teachers were asked how they implement their aims in practice. The three cases are presented as an illustration of practices that may enhance in-depth reflection, holistic understanding and personal development. The teachers’ perceptions of student learning and other outcomes of a Bildung approach are discussed. In particular, the article stresses the importance of a space for negotiation and giving students the opportunity to become speakers.

  • Studying Norms and Social Change in a Digital Age: Identifying and Understanding a Multidimensional Gap Problem
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Social and Legal Norms: Towards a Socio-legal Understanding of Normativity. - London : Routledge. - 9781409453437 - 9780367601225 - 9781315609416 ; , s. 309-330
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fact that the debate concerning copyright in a digital society has been both intense and filled with polemic conflicts ever since the late 1990s makes it clear that it is a most complicated issue to solve, or even grasp. Basically, both the legal and societal discussion and development are explicitly dependent on a greater understanding of the on-going processes surrounding copyright. This presents a well-suited point of departure for research such as the one conducted within the Cybernorms research group – both in terms of providing valuable insights into the field of sociology of law when it comes to understanding how to relate to the framework provided by digitalization in general and the Internet in particular, and in terms of providing more accurate knowledge and toolsets to legislators in related fields.

  • Educational Homogamy and Gender-Specific Earnings: Sweden, 1990-2009
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Demography. - : Springer Verlag (Germany). - 0070-3370 .- 1533-7790. ; 50:4, s. 1197-1216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several studies have shown strong educational homogamy in most Western societies, although the trends over time differ across countries. In this article, we study the connection between educational assortative mating and gender-specific earnings in a sample containing the entire Swedish population born 1960-1974; we follow this sample from 1990 to 2009. Our empirical strategy exploits a longitudinal design, using distributed fixed-effects models capturing the impact of partner education on postmarital earnings, relating it to the income development before union formation. We find that being partnered with someone with more education (hypergamy) is associated with higher earnings, while partnering someone with less education (hypogamy) is associated with lower earnings. However, most of these differences in earnings emerge prior to the time of marriage, implying that the effect is explained by marital selection processes rather than by partner education affecting earnings. The exception is hypogamy among the highly educated, for which there are strong indications that in comparison with homogamy and hypergamy, earnings grow slower after union formation.
