  • The sources of the urban wage premium by worker skills: Spatial sorting or agglomeration economies?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Papers in Regional Science. - : Wiley. - 1056-8190 .- 1435-5957. ; 93:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We estimate the respective importance of spatial sorting and agglomeration economies in explaining the urban wage premium for workers with different sets of skills. Sorting is the main source of the wage premium. Agglomeration economies are in general small, but are larger for workers with skills associated with non-routine job tasks. They also appear to involve human capital accumulation, as evidenced by the change in the wage of workers moving away from denser regions. For workers with routine jobs, agglomeration economies are virtually non-existent. Our results provide further evidence of spatial density bringing about productivity advantages primarily in contexts when problem-solving and interaction with others are important.

  • Experiencing moose and landscape while driving : a simulator and questionnaire study
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Psychology. - : Elsevier. - 0272-4944 .- 1522-9610. ; 41, s. 91-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Animal vehicle collisions (AVC's) have large economic, medical and ecological consequences but have rarely been studied with respect to driver behaviour. The aim of this study was to investigate different AVC-relevant landscape settings (vegetation cover), with and without game fencing and in combination with encountering moose. Twenty-five participants took part in an advanced driving simulator experiment. The results show that neither the presence of a game fence nor vegetation was found to affect driving speed, speed variability, lateral position or visual scanning in general. When a moose appeared at the side of the road, the drivers reacted by slowing down earlier and reducing their speed more when no game fence was present. Furthermore, the speed reduction when a moose was present was significantly larger when the vegetation was sparse. Game fencing made drivers feel at ease whereas dense vegetation was experienced as more stressful.

  • The role of the school library : Reflections from Sweden
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Intercultural Education. - London : Informa UK Limited. - 1467-5986 .- 1469-8439. ; 25:6, s. 497-507
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Libraries are critical learning spaces and may play a significant role in intercultural education initiatives, particularly in Sweden where the national curriculum ascribes central functions to libraries for learning activities. Unfortunately, the ways in which teachers and librarians may collaborate to leverage mutual resources is not fully understood. This article uses Pirjo Lahdenperä’s model of intercultural education development to consider the case of a small school library in a highly diverse urban neighbourhood. Although public libraries in Scandinavia can support intercultural educational values by addressing individual needs and complementing curriculum-based teaching, the development of new teaching practices requires additional guidance as well as institutional support.

  • Corporate community responsibility as an outcome of individual embeddedness
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Social Responsibility Journal. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1747-1117 .- 1758-857X. ; 10:2, s. 297-315
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this article is to improve our understanding of the nature of social responsibility in actual practices and, specifically, the influence of individuals on these processes. Design/methodology/approach: An abductive approach is applied (Alvesson and Sköldberg 1994), i.e. theory is developed by moving between theory and four empirical cases. The storeis highlight the importance of the individual and closeness to local stakeholders and the presence of overlapping rationales.Findings: The individuals’ simultaneous roles – as owners, managers, and community members – influence how they are held or see themselves as accountable and how they account for the firms’ engagement in the community. The activities are conducted in the name of the firm but originate from private as well as business-oriented concerns. Our conclusions encourage an extension of the CSR construct to approach it as an entangled phenomenon resulting from the firm and the individual embeddedness in internal and external cultures.Originality/value: This study brings the individual managers and owner-managers into focus and how their interplay with the surrounding context can create additional dimensions of accountability, which impact on the decisions taken in regard to CSR. A micro-perspective is applied. Corporate community responsibility, particularly in smaller and rural communities, contributes to recognize and understand how individuals influence, and are influenced by CSR.

  • Increased carotid plaque burden in men with the fibrillin-1 2/3 genotype
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology. - : Wiley. - 1440-1681 .- 0305-1870. ; 41:9, s. 637-642
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fibrillin-1 (FBN1) is an important constituent of the vascular wall and earlier studies have indicated an effect of the FBN1 2/3 genotype on blood pressure as well as aortic stiffness in men. The aim of the present study was to determine whether the FBN1 2/3 genotype was associated with the presence of carotid plaque and incident cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in middle-aged subjects. The FBN1 genotype was characterized in 5765 subjects (2424 men, 3341 women; age 45-69years) recruited from the Malmo Diet and Cancer Study Cardiovascular Cohort, Sweden. Plaque occurrence and intima-media thickness (IMT) of the carotid artery were assessed by ultrasound. The incidence of first cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction and stroke) and cause-specific mortality were monitored over a mean follow-up period of 13.2years. The most common FBN1 genotypes were 2/2, 2/3 and 2/4, which accounted for 92.2% (n=5317) of subjects. There were no differences between the three genotypes regarding age, blood pressure, glucose, lipids, smoking habits, common carotid artery diameter and intima-media thickness in men and women. The presence of plaque in the carotid artery was higher in men with the 2/3 genotype compared with the 2/2 and 2/4 genotypes (55% vs 46% and 50%, respectively; P=0.007). No similar differences were observed in women. No significant relationship was observed between FBN1 genotypes and the incidence of cardiovascular disease or all-cause mortality. The increased prevalence of plaque in the carotid artery of middle-aged men with the FBN1 2/3 genotype indicates pathological arterial wall remodelling with a more pronounced atherosclerotic burden.

  • Low wall stress in the popliteal artery: Other mechanisms responsible for the predilection of aneurysmal dilatation?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Vascular Medicine. - : SAGE Publications (UK and US). - 1477-0377 .- 1358-863X. ; 19:2, s. 131-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The popliteal artery (PA) is, after aorta, the most common site for aneurysm formation. Why the PA is more susceptible than other peripheral muscular arteries is unknown. We hypothesized that the wall composition, which in turn affects wall properties, as well as the circumferential wall stress (WS) imposed on the arterial wall, might differ compared to other muscular arteries. The aim was to study the WS of the PA in healthy subjects with the adjacent, muscular, common femoral artery (CFA) as a comparison. Ninety-four healthy subjects were included in this study (45 males, aged 10-78 years and 49 females, aged 10-83 years). The diameter and intima-media thickness (IMT) in the PA and CFA were investigated with ultrasound. Together with blood pressure the WS was defined according to the law of Laplace adjusted for IMT. The diameter increased with age in both PA and CFA (p<0.001), with males having a larger diameter than females (p<0.001). IMT increased with age in both PA and CFA (p<0.001), with higher IMT values in males only in PA (p<0.001). The calculated WS was unchanged with age in both arteries, but lower in PA than in CFA in both sexes (p<0.001). In conclusion, this study shows that the PA and CFA WS is maintained during aging, probably due to a compensatory remodelling response with an increase in arterial wall thickness. However, the stress imposed on the PA wall is quite low, indicating that mechanisms other than WS contribute to the process of pathological arterial dilatation in the PA.

  • Psychometric evaluation of the Danish version of Satisfaction with Daily Occupations (SDO).
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1651-2014 .- 1103-8128. ; 21:3, s. 166-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Aims: The Satisfaction with Daily Occupations (SDO) scale assesses satisfaction within the domains of work, leisure, domestic tasks, and self-care. The aim was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Danish version of the SDO when used with asylum seekers. Methods: The participants were 93 Danes without known ill health and 43 asylum seekers. They completed the SDO and rated their perceived health, activity level, and general satisfaction with daily occupations. Translation into Danish and back-translation into Swedish was made by professional interpreters. Results: Internal consistency was α = 0.75 for the Danish sample and α = 0.79 for the asylum seekers. The SDO distinguished between asylum seekers and the Danish sample, suggesting criterion validity. Concurrent validity, analysed against general satisfaction with daily occupations, was indicated for both samples. Discriminant validity was indicated against self-rated health for both samples and against activity level for the Danish sample. There was, however, a correlation of 0.65 between the SDO satisfaction score and activity level for the asylum seekers. Conclusion: The SDO exhibited satisfactory internal consistency and criterion and concurrent validity. The findings regarding discriminant validity were somewhat inconclusive. The Danish SDO may be regarded as psychometrically sound but further psychometric testing is needed.

  • 'A Fool for Christ' : Sense-Making and Negotiation of Identity in the Life Story of a Christian Soldier
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Comprehending Christian Zionism : Perspectives in Comparison - Perspectives in Comparison. - Minneapolis : Fortress Press. - 9781451472264 - 9781451489644 ; , s. 33-59
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter presents a narrative analysis of the life story of a Swedish Pentecostal who decided to join the Israeli Defense Forces out of his conviction that God wanted him to protect the chosen people. His story is treated as an example of lived Christian Zionism; as one of many manifestations that contemporary Christian affection for Israel can take. The analysis focuses on the central narrative pattern of calling-test of faith-confirmation, 'Jacob's' sense-making of his life choices, and the negotiation of his identity in relation to larger religious and cultural narratives.
