  • AGATA - Advanced GAmma Tracking Array
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 0167-5087 .- 1872-9576. ; 668, s. 26-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation γ-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of γ-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a γ ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of γ-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector- response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. The paper reviews all the achievements made in the AGATA project including all the necessary infrastructure to operate and support the spectrometer. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • A single early postnatal estradiol injection affects morphology and gene expression of the ovary and parametrial adipose tissue in adult female rats.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The Journal of steroid biochemistry and molecular biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-1220 .- 0960-0760. ; 122:1-3, s. 82-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Events during early life can affect reproductive and metabolic functions in adulthood. We evaluated the programming effects of a single early postnatal estradiol injection (within 3h after birth) in female rats. We assessed ovarian and parametrial adipose tissue morphology, evaluated gene expression related to follicular development and adipose tissue metabolism, and developed a non-invasive volumetric estimation of parametrial adipose tissue by magnetic resonance imaging. Estradiol reduced ovarian weight, increased antral follicle size and number of atretic antral follicles, and decreased theca interna thickness in atretic antral follicles. Adult estradiol-injected rats also had malformed vaginal openings and lacked corpora lutea, confirming anovulation. Estradiol markedly reduced parametrial adipose tissue mass. Adipocyte size was unchanged, suggesting reduced adipocyte number. Parametrial adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase activity was increased. In ovaries, estradiol increased mRNA expression of adiponectin, complement component 3, estrogen receptor alpha, and glucose transporter 3 and 4; in parametrial adipose tissue, expression of complement component 3 was increased, expression of estrogen receptor alpha was decreased, and expression of leptin, lipoprotein lipase, and hormone-sensitive lipase was unaffected. These findings suggest that early postnatal estradiol exposure of female rats result in long-lasting effects on the ovary and parametrial adipose tissue at adult age.

  • Nonideal Mixed Micelles of Fluorinated and Hydrogenous Surfactants in Aqueous Solution. NMR and SANS Studies of Anionic and Nonionic Systems
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5827 .- 0743-7463. ; 26:8, s. 5355-5363
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contrast variation SANS and F-19 chemical shifts were measured for three mixed equimolar micelle systems: sodium perfluorooctanoate (SPED) and sodiumdecylsulfate (SDeS) in 200 mM NaCl, lithium perlluorononanate LiPFN) and lithium dodecylsulfate (Li DS) in 200 mM LiCl, and a nonionic system C8F17C2H4(OC2H4)(9) and C12H25(OC2H4)(8) in water, all at 25 C. The chemical shift measurements allow the calculation of the average fraction of nearest neighbors of each kind around the reporter group (the trifluoromethyl group). A preference for like neighbors were found in all systems, smallest in the SDeS/SPFO system and largest in the nonionic system, but in all cases substantially smaller than expected at critical conditions. From the SANS measurements the width of the micelle composition distribution was obtained. For the ionic systems similar values were obtained, showing a broadening compared to ideal mixtures, but not broad enough for demixing or clearly bimodal distributions. In the nonionic system the width was estimated as sigma = 0.18 and 0.22 using two different evaluation methods. These values suggest that the system is close to critical conditions. The lower value refers to a direct modeling of the system, assuming an ellipsoidal shape and a Gaussian composition distribution. The modeling showed the nonionic mixed micelles to be prolate ellipsoids with axial ratio 2.2 and an aggregation number larger than 100. whereas the two ionic systems fitted best to oblate shapes (axial ratios 0.8 and 0.65 for SDeS/SPFO and LiDS/LiPFN. respectively) and aggregation numbers of 60 for both.

  • A variant near the interleukin-6 gene is associated with fat mass in Caucasian men
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Obesity. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0307-0565 .- 1476-5497. ; 34:6, s. 1011-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CONTEXT: Regulation of fat mass appears to be associated with immune functions. Studies of knockout mice show that endogenous interleukin (IL)-6 can suppress mature-onset obesity. OBJECTIVE: To systematically investigate associations of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) near the IL-6 (IL6) and IL-6 receptor (IL6R) genes with body fat mass, in support for our hypothesis that variants of these genes can be associated with obesity. DESIGN AND STUDY SUBJECTS: The Gothenburg Osteoporosis and Obesity Determinants (GOOD) study is a population-based cross-sectional study of 18- to 20-year-old men (n=1049), from the Gothenburg area (Sweden). Major findings were confirmed in two additional cohorts consisting of elderly men from the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Sweden (n=2851) and MrOS US (n=5611) multicenter population-based studies. MAIN OUTCOME: The genotype distributions and their association with fat mass in different compartments, measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. RESULTS: Out of 18 evaluated tag SNPs near the IL6 and IL6R genes, a recently identified SNP rs10242595 G/A (minor allele frequency=29%) 3' of the IL6 gene was negatively associated with the primary outcome total body fat mass (effect size -0.11 standard deviation (s.d.) units per A allele, P=0.02). This negative association with fat mass was also confirmed in the combined MrOS Sweden and MrOS US cohorts (effect size -0.05 s.d. units per A allele, P=0.002). When all three cohorts were combined (n=8927, Caucasian subjects), rs10242595(*)A showed a negative association with total body fat mass (effect size -0.05 s.d. units per A allele, P<0.0002). Furthermore, the rs10242595(*)A was associated with low body mass index (effect size -0.03, P<0.001) and smaller regional fat masses. None of the other SNPs investigated in the GOOD study were reproducibly associated with body fat. CONCLUSIONS: The IL6 gene polymorphism rs10242595(*)A is associated with decreased fat mass in three combined cohorts of 8927 Caucasian men.

  • The influence of particle size and structure in hydrated lime on the properties of the lime putty and lime mortar
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International journal of architectural heritage. - Philadelphia : Taylor & Francis. - 1558-3058 .- 1558-3066. ; 4:2, s. 86-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this work, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of lime slaked in different ways and analysis of thin section of lime putty and mortar specimens by light microscopy was combined with practical tests and field studies to evaluate the impact of the slaking technique on the properties of the lime putty as well as the structure of the fresh and carbonated mortar. The lime slaking methods studied were wet slaking and earth slaking, giving lime putties with very different consistency and workability. The aim of this work was to use microscopy techniques to explain these differences in properties and to investigate if it is possible to use these analytical methods to recognize the lime-slaking technique used in a historical lime mortar. The results obtained by SEM show significant differences in structure between the lime putties. The earth-slaked lime consists of relatively large particles that are packed in a porous system compared with the wet-slaked lime with very small particles closely packed in a dense structure. After storing, the wet-slaked lime gives a putty that has a dense and clearly defined stratified structure, whereas the earth-slaked lime is porous and has no stratification.

  • Computational precision of traffic equilibria sensitivities in automatic network design and road pricing
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research Part B: Methodological. - : Elsevier BV. - 0191-2615 .- 1879-2367. ; 57, s. 485-500
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent studies demonstrate the importance of computational precision of user equilibrium traffic assignment solutions for scenario comparisons. When traffic assignment is hierarchically embedded in a model for network design and/or road pricing, not only the precision of the solution itself becomes more important, but also the precision of its derivatives with respect to the design parameters should be considered. The main purpose of this paper is to present a method for precise computations of equilibrium derivatives. Numerical experiments are used for two evaluations: (1) precision of computed equilibrium derivatives for a medium-size network (Anaheim); and (2) the impact of precise derivatives on capacity-expansion solution quality for a small network (Sioux Falls).

  • On the stability of single-walled carbon nanotubes and their binding strengths
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Theoretical Chemistry Accounts. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-881X .- 1432-2234. ; 131:9, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied the relative stability of hydrogen-terminated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) segments, and open-ended SWNT fragments of varying diameter and chirality that are present at the interface of the catalytic metal particles during growth. We have found that hydrogen-terminated SWNTs differ by < 1 eV in stability among different chiralities, which presents a challenge for selective and property-controlled growth. In addition, both zigzag and armchair tubes can be the most stable chirality of hydrogen-terminated SWNTs, which is a fundamental obstacle for property-controlled growth utilizing thermodynamic stability. In contrast, the most armchair-like open-ended SWNTs segments are always the most stable ones, followed in sequence by chiral index up to the least stable zigzag segments. We explain the ordering by triple bond stabilization of the carbon dangling bonds at the open ends, which is a fragment stabilization effect that is only manifested when all bonds between two layers are broken. We show convincingly that the bond strength difference between zigzag and armchair tubes is not present when individual bonds are broken or formed. © Springer-Verlag 2012.

  • A phylogenetic comparative method for studying multivariate adaptation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Theoretical Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-5193 .- 1095-8541. ; 314, s. 204-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phylogenetic comparative methods have been limited in the way they model adaptation. Although some progress has been made, there are still no methods that can fully account for coadaptation between traits. Based on Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (OU) models of adaptive evolution, we present a method, with R implementation, in which multiple traits evolve both in response to each other and, as in previous OU models, to fixed or randomly evolving predictor variables. We present the interpretation of the model parameters in terms of evolutionary and optimal regressions enabling the study of allometric and adaptive relationships between traits. To illustrate the method we reanalyze a data set of antler and body-size evolution in deer (Cervidae).
