  • Producing and consuming knowledge in social work practice : Research and development activities in a Swedish context.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Evidence and policy. - : Policy Press. - 1744-2648 .- 1744-2656. ; 5:2, s. 127-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to describe how experince-based knowledge can be made visible by giving some examples of how this has been done in Swedish social welfare services, in collaborations between social services agencies and research and development (R&D) units. These examples will be linked to theories and discussed in relation to different research utilisation models. By using one of these models, it is argued that R&D activities can broaden the concept of evidence-based practice and help brigde the gap between research and practice.

  • Physical activity, energy expenditure and their correlates in two cohorts of Swedish subjects between adolescence and early adulthood
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0954-3007 .- 1476-5640. ; 59, s. 1324-1334
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To assess physical activity and energy expenditure and to identify their correlates during adolescence and early adulthood. DESIGN: In a cohort study, total energy expenditure (TEE) and physical activity level (PAL) were assessed at 15 and 21 y from a 7-day activity diary and predicted BMR. The influences on TEE and PAL of body size, gender, sexual maturity, physical activity habits, sitting time, region, social conditions, employment, food habits, smoking and alcohol intake were examined in multivariate analyses.Subjects:71 male and 89 female subjects, living in two socioeconomically different regions of Sweden, a university region and an industrial region. SETTING: The university city of Uppsala and the industrial town of Trollhättan. RESULTS: At both 15 and 21 y, PAL and TEE were high, with gender, sitting time and physical activity habits as main correlates. At age 21 y, employment and the mother's educational level also appeared as significant correlates. The relations between the main variables and their correlates were more complex than at age 15 y, and the sitting time was reduced and the activity habits were changed. CONCLUSIONS: A reduction of daily sitting appears to be a major reason why high levels of physical activity and energy expenditure were maintained from 15 to 21 y of age in spite of changed and less frequent activity habits during this interval.

  • Perceived loneliness and social support in patients with chronic heart failure
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1474-5151 .- 1873-1953. ; 8:4, s. 251-258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-reported conditions have become increasingly important in patient care, and perceived loneliness and social relationships in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) are not sufficiently investigated. Aim: The aim was to investigate perceived loneliness and social support in patients with CHF. Further, to investigate whether loneliness and social support might be associated with gender, age, healthcare utilization and mortality. Methods: One hundred and forty nine patients with CHF, hospitalised at least once during a 4-month period in 2006, completed a self-reported questionnaire including measurements about loneliness and social support. Healthcare utilization was assessed prospectively by frequency of readmissions and number of days hospitalised during 1 year. Results: Loneliness was reported by 29 (20%) participants. They were more often women (p < 0.001) and younger (p = 0.024). Patients who perceived loneliness had fewer social contacts (p = 0.033), reported lower occurrence of emotional contacts (p = 0.004), were less satisfied with social contacts and close relationships (p < 0.001). Those reporting loneliness had more days hospitalised (p = 0.044), and more readmissions to hospital (p = 0.027), despite not having more severe CHF. Conclusion: Loneliness is a health-related risk indicator in that patients with CHF who perceived loneliness have more healthcare utilization than those who do not report loneliness despite not having more severe CHF. © 2009 Elsevier B.V.
