    • The geochemical and isotopic characteristics of metamorphosed Svecofennian maficdykes from the Dannemora area in the NE part of the Bergslagen region in central Sweden wereinvestigated and compared to mafic intrusive rocks in their vicinity. The dykes, with an inferred ageof c. 1860–1870 Ma, are calc-alkaline, sub-alkaline and basaltic in composition and have a mixedsubduction and within-plate geochemical affinity. They are the result of mixing of at least three mantlesource components with similar basaltic major element composition, but different concentrations ofincompatible trace elements. Magma M1 is strongly enriched both in Rare Earth Elements (REE)and High-Field-Strength Elements (HFSE); magma M2 is highly enriched in Large-Ion LithophileElements (LILE, except Sr) with only moderate enrichment in HFSE and REE (particularly low inHeavy Rare Earth Elements); and magma M3 is enriched in Sr and has a flat REE profile. MagmaM3 also has a somewhat more positive (depleted) initial εNd value of +1.8, compared to +0.4 to +0.5 for magmas M1 and M2. The magma evolution was controlled by a mixture of fractionation (mainlyaffecting the compatible elements) and mixing, best seen in the incompatible element concentrationsand the Nd isotope data. The basaltic overall composition indicates little or no wholesale contaminationby upper continental crust, but the dykes have undergone later metasomatic changes mainly affectingthe alkali elements.

  • Partial Genetic Turnover in Neandertals : Continuity in the East and Population Replacement in the West

    • Remarkably little is known about the population-level processes leading up to the extinction of the neandertal. To examine this, we use mitochondrial DNA sequences from 13 neandertal individuals, including a novel sequence from northern Spain, to examine neandertal demographic history. Our analyses indicate that recent western European neandertals (< 48 kyr) constitute a tightly defined group with low mitochondrial genetic variation in comparison with both eastern and older (> 48 kyr) European neandertals. Using control region sequences, Bayesian demographic simulations provide higher support for a model of population fragmentation followed by separate demographic trajectories in subpopulations over a null model of a single stable population. The most parsimonious explanation for these results is that of a population turnover in western Europe during early Marine Isotope Stage 3, predating the arrival of anatomically modern humans in the region.

  • Extended phylogeny and a revised generic classification of the Pannariaceae (Peltigerales, Ascomycota)

    • We estimated phylogeny in the lichen-forming ascomycete family Pannariaceae. We specifically modelled spatial (across-site) heterogeneity in nucleotide frequencies, as models not incorporating this heterogeneity were found to be inadequate for our data. Model adequacy was measured here as the ability of the model to reconstruct nucleotide diversity per site in the original sequence data. A potential non-orthologue in the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) of Degelia plumbea was observed. We propose a revised generic classification for the Pannariaceae, accepting 30 genera, based on our phylogeny, previously published phylogenies, as well as available morphological and chemical data. Four genera are established as new: Austroparmeliella (for the 'Parmeliella' lacerata group), Nebularia (for the 'Parmeliella' incrassata group), Nevesia (for 'Fuscopannaria' sampaiana), and Pectenia (for the 'Degelia' plumbea group). Two genera are reduced to synonymy, Moelleropsis (included in Fuscopannaria) and Santessoniella (non-monophyletic; type included in Psoroma). Lepidocollema, described as monotypic, is expanded to include 23 species, most of which have been treated in the 'Parmeliella' mariana group. Homothecium and Leightoniella, previously treated in the Collemataceae, are here referred to the Pannariaceae. We propose 41 new species-level combinations in the newly described and re-circumscribed genera mentioned above, as well as in Leciophysma and Psoroma.

  • Zero Prevalence of Influenza A Virus in Two Raptor Species by Standard Screening

    • Disease can have sever impact on animal populations, especially in rare species. Baseline data for atypical host species are missing for a range of infectious diseases, although such hosts are potentially more affected than the normal vectors and reservoir species. If highly pathogenic avian influenza strikes rare birds of prey, this may have crucial impact on the predator species itself, but also on the food web in which it interacts. Here we present the first large-scale screening of raptors that regularly consume birds belonging to the natural reservoir of influenza A viruses. Influenza A virus prevalence was studied in two rare raptors, the white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaetus albicilla) and the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus). Nestlings were screened for active (181 white-tailed sea eagles and 168 peregrine falcons) and past (123 white-tailed sea eagles and 6 peregrine falcons) infection in 2006-2007, and an additional 20 succumbed adult white-tailed sea eagles were sampled in 2003-2006. Neither high- nor low-pathogenic influnza infections were found in our sample, but this does not rule out that the former may have major impact on rare raptors and their food webs.

  • On the potential roles of ticks and migrating birds in the ecology of West Nile virus

    • BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes are the primary vectors of West Nile virus (WNV). Ticks have, however, been suggested to be potential reservoirs of WNV. In order to investigate their role in the spread of the virus, ticks, which had been collected from birds migrating northwards from Africa to Europe, were analyzed for the potential presence of WNV-RNA.METHODS: On the Mediterranean islands Capri and Antikythira a total of 14,824 birds were captured and investigated from which 747 ticks were collected.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Most of the identified ticks (93%) were nymphs and larvae of Hyalomma marginatum sensu lato, most of which were or appear to be Hyalomma rufipes. Of these ticks 729 were individually screened for WNV-RNA. None of the ticks was found to be WNV positive. Thus, there was no evidence that Hyalomma marginatum s.l. ticks play a role in the spread of WNV from Africa to Europe.

    • Globular fossils showing palintomic cell cleavage in the Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation, China, are widely regarded as embryos of early metazoans, although metazoan synapomorphies, tissue differentiation, and associated juveniles or adults are lacking. We demonstrate using synchrotron-based x-ray tomographic microscopy that the fossils have features incompatible with multicellular metazoan embryos. The developmental pattern is comparable with nonmetazoan holozoans, including germination stages that preclude postcleavage embryology characteristic of metazoans. We conclude that these fossils are neither animals nor embryos. They belong outside crown-group Metazoa, within total-group Holozoa (the sister clade to Fungi that includes Metazoa, Choanoflagellata, and Mesomycetozoea) or perhaps on even more distant branches in the eukaryote tree. They represent an evolutionary grade in which palintomic cleavage served the function of producing propagules for dispersion.

    • The avian family Paridae (tits and chickadees) contains c. 55 species distributed in the Palearctic, Nearctic, Afrotropics and Indomalaya. The group includes some of the most well-known and extensively studied avian species, and the evolutionary history, in particular the post-glacial colonization of the northern latitudes, has been comparably well-studied for several species. Yet a comprehensive phylogeny of the whole clade is lacking. Here, we present the first complete species phylogeny for the group based on sequence data front two nuclear introns and one mitochondrial gene for 67 taxa of parids. Our results strongly support the inclusion of the Fire-capped Tit (Cephalopyrus flammiceps), currently placed in the Remizidae, as the most basal member of the Paridae. The Yellow-browed Tit (Sylviparus modestus) and the Sultan Tit (Melanochlora sultanea) constitute the next two sequential branches whereas the remaining tits fall into two large clades, one of which contains the seed hoarding and nest excavating species. The indicated clades within these two groups are largely congruent with recent classifications, but with several unforeseen relationships, such as non-monophyly of the Sombre Tit (Poecile lugubris) and the Marsh Tit (Poecile palustris), as well as non-monophyly of both the African gray and the African black tits. Further, our results support a close relationship between the White-fronted Tit (Parus semilarvatus) and the varied Tit (Poecile varius) as well as a close relationship between the White-naped Tit (Parus nuchalis) and the Yellow-cheeked and Black-bred tits (Parus spilonotus and P. xanthogenys). Finally, Hume's Ground-tit (Pseudopodoces humilis) is found to be closely related to the Green-backed Tit (Parus monticolus) and the Great Tit (Parus major). We propose a new classification that is in accordance with this phylogeny.

  • Petrogenesis and geotectonic setting of early Svecofennian arc cumulates in the Roslagen area, east-central Sweden

    • Several intrusions of ultrabasic to basic composition occur in the Roslagen area of east-central Sweden in close spatial and temporal association with the surrounding 1.90-1.87Ga old early orogenic Svecofennian granitoids. An imprecise Sm-Nd WR errorchron yields an age of 1895±71Ma. In spite of the penetrative deformation in the granitoids, the basic-ultrabasic rocks mostly appear undeformed and largely preserve magmatic textures with plagioclase, olivine (in some rock types), orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene, and amphibole as major constituents. The plagioclase is typically very anorthitic (ca. An 90). The Roslagen intrusions range in composition from primitive to evolved (Mg# 80 to 49) but contain only 40-50wt% SiO 2. Many samples are highly elevated in Al 2O 3 (up to 30wt%), CaO (up to 16wt%) and Sr (up to 800ppm), with strongly positive Eu and Sr anomalies, in line with being plagioclase cumulates. Although masked by cumulus effects, the relative trace element contents indicate a volcanic arc signature. The initial Nd isotope composition is homogeneously 'mildly depleted', with ε Nd of +0.3 to +1.1, and the initial Sr isotope composition 'mildly enriched', with ε Sr of +8 to +15. Non-cumulus rocks with small Eu and Sr anomalies can be used to deduce the composition of the parental magma. This LILE- and LREE-enriched and HFSE-depleted high-alumina basalt magma, with Mg# of ca. 50-60 and Ca# of ca. 80, most likely formed by partial melting of mantle material, enriched by fluids in a subduction environment, at 1.9Ga. The cumulate rocks apparently crystallized from a somewhat more evolved water-rich magma with Mg# of ca. 40. Crystallization was followed by the development of late-magmatic to post-magmatic coronas between olivine and plagioclase in the presence of H 2O-rich fluids. The subduction-related setting would make these intrusions Palaeoproterozoic counterparts of Alaskan-type ultramafic intrusions, but they differ from those in being plagioclase enriched, possibly reflecting different levels of exposure.

    • An assemblage of mineralized skeletal fossils containing molluscs, hyoliths, chancelloriids, protoconodonts, lobopods, paleoscolecids, bradoriids, echinoderms and hexactinellid sponges is described from the middle Cambrian part of the Kuonamka Formation, exposed along the Malaya Kuonamka and Bol’shaya Kuonamka rivers, northern Siberian Platform. The sampled succession is attributed to the Kuonamkites and lower Tomagnostus fissus–Paradoxides sacheri biozones of the Amgan Stage of Siberia, correlated with Series 3, Stage 5—lower Drumian Stage of the IUGS chronostratigraphical scheme for the Cambrian. This work complements descriptions of molluscs from the same samples published by Gubanov et al. (2004) with additional material. It contains forms in common with coeval faunas from Australia, China, Western Gondwana, Avalonia, Laurentia and Baltica, increasing potential for global biostratigraphic correlation and understanding of palaeogeographic connections.
