- Contributing to the “Covid-19 and the Social Sciences” essay series, Oscar Abedi, Maria Eriksson Baaz, David Mwambari, Swati Parashar, Anju Oseema Maria Toppo, and James Vincent outline various paths toward reducing field research’s potential for exploitation, especially that of Global South collaborators. The pandemic has highlighted inequalities and immobility that differently affect facilitating researchers and contracting researchers. In response, the authors identify key issues that institutions, publishers, and individual researchers must reflect on in order to counteract these imbalances—and take advantage of an opportunity to fundamentally transform field research into collaborative knowledge production.

Does Election Salience Affect Immigrant Voter Turnout?

- Faced with rising levels of cross-border migration, many democratic countries have extended local voting rights to non-naturalized immigrants in recent decades. However, the low turnout of enfranchised immigrants in these elections has come as a disappointment to the advocates of such reforms. In this study, we examine whether the low turnout can be explained by the low salience of local elections. Based on a regression discontinuity design and using high-quality Swedish registry data, we find this to be the case. According to our results, the average likelihood of voting increases by 10-20 percentage points once immigrants become eligible to vote in national elections. We demonstrate too that this effect is not driven by the acquisition of citizenship per se, and that the individual characteristics of immigrants cannot explain their overall lower rate of voter turnout.

- When the climate apocalypse comes I’ll make it: 16 year old Hampus Andersson’s survival month living off the lands and waters in the forests of Norrbotten, Sweden. There is a lot of talk of crisis and apocalypse, due to war, to climate change. Young people worried about their future go on school strike and manifest, around the world. But, when the climate or any other crisis happens, how are these young (and adult) protesters prepared to fend for themselves? How long can you survive without electricity and water in the tap, with access to food in the supermarket? Thinking about all of this, 16 year old Hampus Andersson decided to try to live off the lands and waters for a full month, on his own. If there is such a crisis, would he make it on his own? From mid July to mid August 2019, the experiment went on. He made sure to learn from more experienced and older reindeer herders and others with experience from the forests. Hampus is not completely unaware on how to get access to food in the forest. His father is a Sámi reindeer herder, and his mother’s family are an agriculture family. But until this day he had never done such an experiment. How would he find food, water, shelter? What would be the hardest? Some things that he had never even thought about turned out to be harder than expected. During the stay Hampus documented his everyday life with photos and short films, and posted on his Facebook page and Instagram. This is a film made from those photos and videos, along with an interview by film maker Petri Storlöpare, Slowfilm AB. Hampus speaks of his experiences, thoughts and ideas on how to continue this experiment. Will he try the same in the Arctic winter, with temperatures down to minus 40 Celsius? The film project is supported by Dálkke: Indigenous Climate Change Studies, led by Dr. May-Britt Öhman, Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies on Racism, CEMFOR, Uppsala University.

Approximate multiplication of nearly sparse matrices with decay in a fully recursive distributed task-based parallel framework

- Abstract.In this paper we consider parallel implementations of approximate multiplication oflarge matrices with exponential decay of elements. Such matrices arise in computations related to electronic structure calculations and some other fields of computational science. Commonly, sparsity is introduced by dropping out small entries (truncation) of input matrices. Another approach, the sparse approximate multiplication algorithm [M. Challacombe and N. Bock, arXiv preprint1011.3534, 2010] performs truncation of sub-matrix products. We consider these two methods and their combination, i.e. truncation of both input matrices and sub-matrix products. Implementations done using the Chunks and Tasks programming model and library [E. H. Rubensson and E. Rudberg,Parallel Comput., 40:328343, 2014] are presented and discussed. We show that the absolute error in the Frobenius norm behaves as and for all three methods, where is the matrix size and is the truncation threshold. We compare the methods on a model problem and show that the combined method outperforms the original two. The methods are also applied to matrices coming from large chemical systems with atoms. We showthat the combination of the two methods achieves better weak scaling by reducing the amount of communication by a factor of .
