  • Variants of the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist gene are associated with fat mass in men

    • Context: Immune functions seem to have connections to variations in body fat mass. Studies of knockout mice indicate that endogenous interleukin (IL)-1 can suppress mature-onset obesity. Objective: To systematically investigate our hypotheses that single- nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and/or haplotypes variants in the IL-1 gene system are associated with fat mass. Subjects: The Gothenburg osteoporosis and obesity determinants (GOOD) study is a population-based cross-sectional study of 18-20 year-old men (n = 1068), from Gothenburg, Sweden. Major findings were confirmed in elderly men (n = 3014) from the Swedish part of the osteoporotic fractures in men (MrOS) multicenter population-based study. Main Outcome Measure: The genotype distributions and their association with body fat mass in different compartments, measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Results: Out of 15 investigated SNPs in the IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL1RN) gene, a recently identified 30 untranslated region C4T (rs4252041, minor allele frequency 4%) SNP was associated with the primary outcome total fat mass (P = 0.003) and regional fat masses, but not with lean body mass or serum IL-1 receptor 1 (IL1RN) levels. This SNP was also associated with body fat when correcting the earlier reported IL1RN_2018 T4C (rs419598) SNP (in linkage disequilibrium with a well-studied variable number tandem repeat of 86 bp). The association between rs4252041 SNP and body fat was confirmed in the older MrOS population (P = 0.03). The rs4252041 SNP was part of three haplotypes consisting of five adjacent SNPs that were identified by a sliding window approach. These haplotypes had a highly significant global association with total body fat (P < 0.001). None of the other investigated members of the IL-1 gene family displayed any SNPs that have not been described previously to be significantly associated with body fat. Conclusions: The IL1RN gene, shown to enhance obesity by suppressing IL-1 effects in experimental animals, have no previously described gene polymorphisms and haplotypes that are associated with fat, but not lean mass in two populations of men.     • We use resonance Raman scattering (incident photon energies between 1.8 and 4.13 eV), LDA+U calculations, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and oblique IR reflectivity to characterize the strong electron-phonon interactions in the disordered perovskite LaFe0.5Cr0.5O3. When the photon energy coincides with a Cr to Fe Mott-Hubbard transfer gap around 2.4 eV the electron-phonon interaction is manifested by a Franck-Condon effect with exceptional first-and higher order scattering of a local oxygen breathing mode. At higher incident energies we observe a superposition of Franck-Condon scattering and Frohlich interaction induced infrared active longitudinal optical two-phonon scattering activated mainly by O to Fe charge transfer. Our results establish LaFe0.5Cr0.5O3 as a model compound for research on electron-phonon interactions in strongly correlated complex systems and show that Franck-Condon scattering in complex solids is not limited to Jahn-Teller active compounds.

    • We use temperature-dependent inelastic light scattering to study the origin of the strong multiphonon scattering of a local oxygen breathing mode present in the mixed B-site orthorhombic (space group Pnma) perovskite LaFe0.5Cr0.5O3 but absent in isostructural LaFeO3 and LaCrO3. It is seen that the multiphonon scattering is critically sensitive to the presence of both Fe and Cr ions on the B site. These results support our interpretation that the multiphonon scattering is activated by local electron-phonon interactions according to the Franck-Condon picture following an Fe-Cr charge transfer. Further, O-18 substitution is performed on the x=0, 0.04, and 0.5 compounds and clearly shows that all modes appearing above the first-order phonon-scattering region in these compounds originate from higher-order oxygen stretching vibrations. In particular this is the case for the strong second-order scattering dominating the scattering response in LaFeO3. Accordingly we propose that these modes are generated by infrared-active longitudinal optical (IR LO) two-phonon and combination scattering activated by Frohlich interaction. For x=0.02 and 0.04 the characteristic IR LO two-phonon and Franck-Condon multiphonon-scattering profiles mix. We also study the influence of isovalent cation substitution and Sr doping in AFe(0.5)Cr(0.5)O(3) (A=La, Nd, and Gd) and La1-ySryFe0.5Cr0.5O3-delta (y=0, 0.16, and 0.5) on the strong electron-phonon coupling present in LaFe0.5Cr0.5O3. The Franck-Condon effect in LaFe0.5Cr0.5O3, is not significantly affected by isovalent A-site substitution, despite the increasing orthorhombic distortion associated with decreasing A-site ionic radii. On the contrary, aliovalent Sr doping causes a rapid decrease in the Franck-Condon scattering. This shows that the strong electron-phonon coupling in these compounds is highly sensitive to local lattice and electronic decoherence but insensitive to global lattice distortions. Finally, a preliminary assignment of the A(g) and B-2g phonon modes in AFe(0.5)Cr(0.5)O(3) (A=La, Nd, and Gd) is made based on the present observations and published results for LaCrO3 and AMnO(3). The modes associated with oxygen octahedral tilt and bending vibrations are heavily influenced by the magnitude of the orthorhombic distortion.

  • Spin-glass transition in a La-doped Sr2MnWO6 double perovskite

    • Polycrystalline Sr2-xLaxMnWO6 (x=0.25 and 0.5) materials have been prepared by a traditional solid state sintering method and studied by neutron powder diffraction (NPD) and magnetization measurements. Rietveld analysis of the temperature dependent NPD data shows that the compounds crystallize in monoclinic symmetry (space group P2(1)/n). The unit cell volume decreases with increasing La3+ concentration at the A site. The crystal structure contains alternating MnO6 and WO6 octahedra, considerably tilted due to the relative small size of the cations that occupy the A sublattice of the perovskite. ac and dc magnetization measurements show a destruction of the low temperature antiferromagnetic phase by electron doping through substitution of Sr2+ for La3+. The electron doping creates a mixed tungsten valence (W6+/W5+) resulting in a low temperature spin-glass state.

  • The influence of craftsmanship on the inner structures of lime plasters

    • The use of traditional lime plaster in restoration of old buildings is motivated by bothtechnical and historic reasons. The plasterer deals daily with a multivariable problem wherethe variables are related in such a complex way that we are not even close to findingconverging solutions by traditional scientific methods. The decisions and actions of thecraftsman will have an influence on both the surface structure and the inner structure of thelime plaster. The present paper will focus on the time between application of mortar andworking on the surface to make a floated finish. In total, 32 lime plaster surfaces have beenanalysed. Half of them have been worked on after they have stiffened up and half of themhave been worked on while they are still fresh. The results clearly show that the time betweenapplication of mortar and working the surface is a critical parameter. If you wait until theright time, you receive a more homogeneous and compact material with an open surface anda higher frost resistance.

  • Traditional lime mortar and plaster : Reconstruction with emphasis on durability

    • Lime mortar and plaster have been investigated with the aim to improve the knowledge on how to make them as durable as before the cement technology was developed. The background was the durability problems experienced for newly produced lime plaster on the medieval churches on the island of Gotland, Sweden. In some cases the new lime plaster façades showed severe frost damages after only one winter. Although the lime was burnt and produced according to old local traditions, the lime mortar was still mixed and worked onaccording to methods developed for lime-cement mortar. This often led to a very porous lime plaster with a lime shell in the surface and such a plaster has been shown to be sensitive to frost expansion. Field studies were combined with laboratory studies of thin section specimens. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy have been important analytical methods showing the porosity and the structure of the binder and aggregate materials. The investigations have been carried out on both historic and on newly made reference mortar and plaster. The field studies were carried out mainly on Gotland, using local materials. The influence of the raw materials, i.e. lime, aggregate and blending ratio was investigated. The focus has been on the workability of the fresh mortars as well as the pore structure of the carbonated plaster. The craftsmanship, meaning mixing and application of mortar and working the plaster surface, was studied in order to clarify its final pore structure. The pore structure in a material determines many of its technical properties, such as moisture transportation, compressive strength, permeability and frost resistance. All these properties are closely connected to the durability of the mortar and plaster. The permeability of the plaster has an impact also on the durability of the covered construction materials. Behind low-permeable plasters made with hydraulic binder, examples of extensive damages of rotten wood and leached lime have been shown. The investigations have shown the importance of choosing a mortar adjusted to the building construction. They also showed the importance of choosing a blending ratio adjusted to the specific binder and sand used in order to get a mortar with a suitable pore structure and good durability. It has also shown the importance of knowing when and how to work on the plaster surface in order to obtain a homogenous material that is well receptive for lime wash and has a good frost resistance. The combination of all the investigations has led to a method for reconstructing historic mortar and plaster with good durability.

    • FLUKA is a multipurpose Monte Carto code describing transport and interaction with matter of a, large variety of particles over a wide energy range ill complex geometries. FLUKA is successfully applied ill several fields, including, but not only particle physics, cosmic-ray physics, dosimetry, radioprotection, hadron therapy. space radiation, accelerator design and neutronics. Here we briefly review recent model developments and provide examples of applications to hadron therapy, including calculation of physical and biological dose for comparison with analytical treatment planning engines as well as beta(+)-activation for therapy monitoring by means of positron emission tomography.

  • One-loop QCD spin chain and its spectrum

    • We study the renormalization of gauge invariant operators in large Nc QCD. We compute the complete matrix of anomalous dimensions to leading order in the 't Hooft coupling and study its eigenvalues. Thinking of the mixing matrix as the Hamiltonian of a generalized spin chain we find a large integrable sector consisting of purely gluonic operators constructed with self-dual field strengths and an arbitrary number of derivatives. This sector contains the true ground state of the spin chain and all the gapless excitations above it. The ground state is essentially the anti-ferromagnetic ground state of a XXX1 spin chain and the excitations carry either a chiral spin quantum number with relativistic dispersion relation or an anti-chiral one with non-relativistic dispersion relation.

    • The publicly available free computer program, SimChemistry, was used as an active learning tool in the chemical engineering curriculum at the University College of Borås, Sweden. The activity involved students writing their own simulation programs on topics in the area of molecular structure and interactions. Evaluation of the learning experience was done using interviews and by comparing learning outcomes with previous teachings of the topics. Overall, the outcome was interactively engaging group work, high quality construction of simulations, and a much better ability to explain molecular-level chemical concepts and their relations. An interesting perception that emerged during the interviews was that many of the students were unable to explicitly describe the improvement in learning that they had experienced. However, they did recognize that learning had occurred, and all firmly and positively recommended that the initiative be continued for subsequent courses.

    • In this paper we discuss visualizations in mathematics from a historical and didactical perspective. We consider historical debates from the 17th and 19th centuries regarding the role of intuition and visualizations in mathematics. We also consider the problem of what a visualization in mathematical learning can achieve. In an empirical study we investigate what mathematical conclusions university students made on the basis of a visualization. We emphasize that a visualization in mathematics should always be considered in its proper context.
