- In the 1930s the Swedish homes were modernized through a series of social reforms. As a result of this, time was expected to be released from the housewife’s daily domestic duties and the question was what to do with this time. In this dissertation the concept of time is used in the sense of free time as time for free thinking. The time issue during the thirties is an underlying question throughout the study. The magazine Morgonbris (1904-), a political campaign journal published by the social democratic women’s association (in Swedish: Socialdemokratiska kvinnoförbundet, SSKF) was the public arena for political issues of this kind.The aim of the study is to scrutinize the magazine, its shape (typography and layout) and content, the editors´ journalism as well as the relationship to the SSKF and the circle of readers during the decade, in order to describe the dramatic changes of this political and public arena with special focus on the editorship of Kaj Andersson (1931-1936).Methodologically this study draws on Hannah Arendt’s “storytelling” or “fragmented historiography”. Theoretically the concepts “public sphere” and “proletarian experiences” are adopted and Jürgen Habermas, Oscar Negt & Alexander Kluge as well as Pierre Bourdieu, are referred to. The gender perspectives of Joan F. Scott and Yvonne Hirdman are also adopted.Kaj Andersson’s ”active journalism” in Morgonbris exhibits two distinguishing characteristics during the thirties, it was clearly socialist and critical towards nazism and fascism and it was the most salient vehicle of modernity within the Swedish press at the time. She re-styled the magazine, gave it a new outfit and introduced a new kind of modern, photojournalism. The result was an economic upswing for the magazine. The heritage of Ellen Key´s aesthetics came forward in a consumer campaign, “The best of the industry to the needs of the homes” (Fabrikernas bästa till hemmens behov), which bears similarities to the “Better Homes of America” campaign, launched in the 1920s in the USA. The political path in both campaigns coincided partly with the agenda of Alva Myrdal. Also the “Housewife Holiday” campaign that Kaj Andersson initiated in Morgonbris was in line with the modernization of women’s life throughout the country. The exhausted housewives’ yearning for rest and temporary release from domestic duties was reflected in several articles, in which their grass-root initiatives were acknowledged as political action.Until Kaj Anderson left Morgonbris, after several schisms with the committee about her creative – her backbiters would say self-indulgent – style to run the editorial office, she balanced on the border between commercialism and socialism. Her background in the party press, the social democratic newspaper Social Demokraten, influenced her ideas, but her initiatives to turn to the fields of production and consumption also drove a wedge into the field of journalism, as an involuntary beginning to separate it from the field of politics.

- Women participated actively in the Finnish Civil War in January 1918–April 1918. The radicalization of the Finnish Social Democratic Party and the embracing of a revolutionary discourse sent tremors also to Sweden. In this article, I investigate how the Swedish Social Democratic women’s journal Morgonbris addresses women’s political violence in the period surrounding the Russian Revolution in March 1917, the October 1917 Bolshevik takeover and the following Civil War in Finland early 1918. Morgonbris did not shun from reporting or debating women’s political violence, however, as this article shows there is a great discrepancy between how different acts of violence are understood in the greater discourse. Some violence, and especially some acts of violence committed by women, is clearly framed as more legitimate than others.

- Maria Sandel (1870-1927) var en av våra första arbetarförfattare. Hon försörjde sig som trikåstickerska i Kungsholmens arbetarkvarter i Stockholm, medverkade i arbetarpressen och gav namn åt den socialdemokratiska kvinnotidningen Morgonbris (1904). Hon gav ut sex böcker – två novellsamlingar och fyra romaner. Maria Sandel var självlärd och arbetade ständigt på att bredda och utveckla sin bildning. Bildning är också ett rikt varierat tema i hennes ofta vågade och frispråkiga författarskap. Denna bok boken behandlar den mångsidiga bildningssyn som Maria Sandel rör sig med: dess förhållande till samtiden, hur den kommer till uttryck i hennes författarskap, hur den förskjuts och utvecklas över tid och vilka litterära traditioner hon anknyter till.

- Solidarity has a long history as one of the most central and elusiveconcepts in socialist language. This article aims to examine social democraticsolidarity as a propagandistic and ideological concept in the 1980s, time ofpolitical rupture when solidarity was being reassessed and redefined. Theconcept is examined in the monthly magazines of the Swedish social democraticyouth and women’s branch organisations Tvärdrag, Frihet and Morgonbris. Thestudy shows that the place and function of the concept of solidarity isambiguous. On the one hand, the concept emerges as ideologically central inthat its meaning is subject to struggle. The ambivalent relationship of socialdemocracy to neoliberal influences exemplifies this. Solidarity could bepresented as the antithesis of neoliberalism, while in other texts and contextsthe concept was almost depoliticised by placing it in the sphere of the privatesphere or presented as the responsibility of the individual.

- Redaktör: Anna Nordenstam Svenska kvinnotidskrifter har en lång tradition. Det började med Tidskrift för hemmet 1859 och har sedan fortsatt med många viktiga tidskrifter som Hertha,Morgonbris, Tidevarvet, Vi mänskor, Kvinnobulletinen, Bang och de akademiska tidskrifterna som Tidskrift för genusvetenskap, den populärvetenskapliga Genus och fanzines av olika slag. Det är en brokig skara tidskrifter: långvariga och kortvariga, borgerliga och socialistiska, politiska, kulturella och vetenskapliga, små och stora. Mycket skiljer dem åt, men en sak förenar: kvinnotidskriften har varit och är en viktig plats för kvinnofrågor i samhället, politiken och kulturen. Kvinnotidskrifterna har varit betydelsefulla som opinionsbildare, som kultur- och litteraturförmedlare, som mötesplats för kritisk tänkande, som informationsspridare, som identitetsskapare och som humoristisk arena. - Dom över död man (eng. Doom over dead man; 2012) the award-winning Swedish-Norwegian film about Torgny Segerstedt, directed by Jan Troell, raises the question about the Swedish resistance against Nazism during the thirties. Torgny Segerstedt, editor of Göteborgs Handels- och Sjöfarts tidning GHT, (1872-1973) during World War II, has been praised for its defence of free speach. Another critical voice, although not as well known, came from the editor Kaj Andersson in the Socialdemokratiska kvinnoförbundets, SSKF monthly magazine Morgonbris (1904- --). She used the modern photography and photomontage as a rhetorical weapon in the anti-fascist criticism as well as in supporting the modern welfare state. She arranged a consumer campaign to modernize the Swedish homes and stimulate consumption. A comparison with an American dito is discussed. Studies of how women communicated politics via their magazines may bring new aspects of twentieth century publicity, thus a call is made for a more comprehensive study of research. A first step would be to scrutinize the various genre names in the archives and bibliographies, which obscures the field.
