The regime’s worst nightmare : the mobilisation of citizen democracy. A study of Podemos’ (aesthetic) populism and production of affect in political discourse

- In spite of not even being officially registered three months before the European Parliament Elections of 2014, the Spanish upstart party Podemos captured almost 8 percent of the vote, while barely nine months after its formation, in October 2014, social surveys were citing the party as the leading force in national politics. The overall purpose of this paper is to explore how Podemos’ aesthetic and its discursive strategies are being used to mobilize affect and create collective identities in the battle for political hegemony in Spain. I argue in dialogue with Laclau [2005. On populist reason. London: Verso], Errejón and Mouffe [2016. Podemos: in the name of the people. London: Lawrence & Wishart] that: (a) the articulation of a new political grammar and discursive conflicts in which the popular majority can identify themselves as subjects in opposition to an adversary ‘Other’ plays a central role in constructing ‘the people’ as a new form of political culture, especially in times of crisis whereby; (b) the notion of populism transgresses categories such as ‘oversimplification’ and/or ‘demagogy’ and can also be regarded in terms of exhibiting sensitivity to popular demands and participatory democracy. My findings show that welfare politics are not necessarily best communicated through traditional left-wing symbols, due to the left’s popular link with communism and political defeat; these having been repeatedly recounted by the media/culture industry throughout history. Indeed, many may share the idea of protecting a nation’s common social services without wanting to position themselves within a Marxist (leftist) framework. I point to the representative crisis as an affective crisis where there is a potential affective space to be filled. From here, I stress that resistance movements seem to need to learn the current media logic of conflict and recognition in order to mediate affect and produce identification.

Performing and Re/Defining Democracy in Post-austerity Spain : Political Communication and Discursive Practices of the 'Podemos' Party-Movement

- This thesis looks at the Spanish Podemos party-movement in its attempt to both undertake and to a large extent ‘live’ a certain political experiment in the context following the 2007–2008 economic crisis. Podemos is thus perceived as performing and re/defining democracy as part of undertaking political action and building a political identity. Democracy is seen as being conceptualized and enacted in political discourse and in a variety of (mediated) contexts. At its core, the thesis examines how Podemos defines and enacts democracy in the lead-up to, and the aftermath of, the December 2015 general election, eventually bringing the partymovement into the Spanish Parliament. The thesis first explores how the notion of democracy is conceptualized and communicated in Podemos’ Twitter discourse and how these conceptualizations relate to various ways of performing democracy via the construction of Podemos’ and other parties’ (political) identities. The thesis then examines how Podemos’ online political communication campaign spots particularise various democratic imaginaries as well as discursively construct a political frontier between ‘us’ and ‘them’. Last, the thesis looks at how Podemos’ leader and his key counterparts perform political identity work as part of their own democratic imaginaries in a televised pre-electoral debate. By linking the above strands of analysis, the thesis shows that Podemos communicates visions and practices of democracy in line with social democracy and participatory democracy and in opposition to the neoliberalism and political elitism that have long dominated Spanish representative democracy. As is also shown, the party’s populist identity is not only constructed at the intersection of its party and movement identities but also intensely enacted as a disclaimer in the aftermath of its institutionalization. Overall, this thesis contributes in particular to demarcating ideological limits within populism, and it does so from a critical discourse and wider media and communication perspective. It is shown that leftwing populism à la Podemos constructs an inclusive ‘people’ and defends a vision of representative democracy that promotes social justice and popular sovereignty. This puts left-wing populism in stark contrast to the by now prevalent right-wing populism that constructs nativist visions of the people rooted in calls for the exclusion of various social groups and arguing for nationalist, authoritarian and conservative views of ‘doing’ politics.

- El panorama político español está siendo testigo en los últimos meses de una situación convulsa propiciada por la aparición de Podemos como partido político que en solo cuatro meses avanzó de su creación en enero de 2014 a la obtención de cinco escaños en las elecciones al Parlamento Europeo de mayo de 2014, y que sigue subiendo en las medidas de intención de voto (CIS, julio de 2014).Podemos nació, desde posturas de la izquierda anticapitalista, como una fuerza de participación ciudadana a través de Círculos que van conformando su programa. Frente a este nuevo actor en el panorama político español, el posicionamiento discursivo elegido por parte de representantes tanto de la política como de los medios de comunicación, ambos mayoritariamente con orientación ideológica de derechas, es la presentación de la imagen de Pablo Iglesias, líder de Podemos, desde el escarnio y la ridiculización. Así, se ataca a su imagen personal desde el apodo despectivo “El Coletas”, por llevar el pelo largo recogido, se hacen comentarios que afean su aseo personal (larazón.es), se le llama “miserable” (debate televisivo Al rojo vivo) o, como es el caso de Esperanza Aguirre, expresidenta del PP de la Comunidad de Madrid, se dirige en una columna de opinión (abc.es) a la imagen política estableciendo paralelismos con las campañas informativas de Goebbels. Se ve intrincado así lo político y lo periodístico que tiene efecto en la arena política, tanto es así que Podemos, sintiéndose objeto de una campaña de hostigamiento y difamación que ha llegado a vincularlo con el terrorismo, (www.podemos.info) ha acudido a acciones legales, con demandas a Aguirre y a Eduardo Inda, del diario El Mundo.En este trabajo me propongo analizar diferentes tipos de discurso de la escena mediática (Charadeau 2005), como columnas de opinión y extractos de debates televisivos, donde me centraré en las actividades de imagen (Hernández Flores 2013), o, más bien, de ataque a la imagen personal de Pablo Iglesias como muestra de una descortesía exacerbada (Kaul de Marlangeon 2005) basada en insultos (Bolívar, 2005) que persigue un fin político ulterior, en lo que se podría llamar descortesía ideológica, esto es, el descrédito de la izquierda por parte de la derecha.

- The variable trust has become widely used in the social science research lately and few concepts seem to have attracted so much attention from such a broad variety of academic disciplines. In political science in the theories on social capital and political culture, emphasizing its importance for democracy, trust has been seen as an essential variable for the understanding of societies. In social capital theory the generalized interpersonal trust is often given a particularly important role to initiate virtuous circles of development in the societies. This paper will treat some of the different theories that are connected both to the definition and the effects of generalized trust and then issues connected to the uncertainty of the measurements of generalized trust.

- En este trabajo se aplican los conceptos de la Pragmática Sociocultural a una interacción entre dos políticos españoles (Celia Villalobos, del Partido Popular, y Pablo Iglesias, de Podemos) durante una jornada de puertas abiertas celebrada en el Congreso de los Diputados en 2015. En este discurso metaparlamentario, la autora trata la categoría conceptual de la imagen del rol en sus aspectos de afiliación (principalmente al propio grupo político) y autonomía, al realzar las cualidades propias como políticos. El análisis -con base en estudios anteriores propios- adopta tanto perspectivas macro como microdiscursivas (cf. Bernal, 2008, 2009 y 2010). Las conclusiones resaltan los efectos sociales de distintos tipos de actividades de imagen en un discurso público y contribuyen a ilustrar la idoneidad de las categorías aplicadas para establecer relaciones entre lo social y lo lingüístico.
