  • swepub:Mat_conferencepaper_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • This paper analyses the character of usability criteria found in lists, which are used for interface design and evaluation. In order to understand usability criteria and relations between different criteria, a categorization of six usability criteria lists has been performed. The analysis has shown that the formulations of criteria reside on different abstraction levels. The results consist of two knowledge contribution. The first contribution is a hierarchical categorization model. The role of this multilevel abstraction hierarchy is to support practical problem solving processes by enabling and supporting the explicit articulation of criteria for a given context. The second contribution is a categorization of usability criteria. The aim of this categorization is to support the understanding of how different usability criteria relate (e.g. overlap or complement) to each other and highlight possible gaps.

    • System development methods are often used as aids during the development of information systems. This paper examines the concept of method and other related notions in order to achieve a better understanding of their meaning and structure. The motivation for this paper is the emerging flora of different and related concepts and thus a need to sort things out. The main contribution of the paper is a conceptual model describing how the method concept and other related notions relate.

    • This paper evaluates how semi-randomly formed project groups, compared to forming groups at free will, affect students’ learning in a project-oriented setting. The findings are based on empirical data. We have analyzed students’ experiences by taking a course in the subject of Information Systems. The identified experiences are considered to be either a strength or a problem. We can conclude that how we form project groups has an effect on learning. We can also conclude that several of the experiences from semi-randomly formed project groups are of both a positive and negative nature. In the concluding chapter, we give some explanations in order to understand the differences in students’ experiences.

    •  The aim of this paper is to contribute to the decision of how to perform evaluation depending on the evaluation context. Three general strategies of how to perform evaluation together with two general strategies of what to evaluate are identified. From the three "how-strategies" and the two "what-strategies" we derive a matrix consisting of six generic types of evalua-tion. Each one of the six types are categorised on a ideal typical level.

    • There has been a growing interest in the philosophy and constituents of design research by a vast amount of IS-scholars. There are several unresolved concerns and issues in design research (DR). Some examples are the outcomes of design research, the role of theorizing in DR, how to conduct evaluation and validation, and the need for different grounding processes to generate valid knowledge from design research endeavors. This paper describes a multi-grounded approach for design research; consisting of three types of grounding processes (theoretical, empirical and internal grounding). The purpose is to investigate DR-based design knowledge and its roles during design research and design practice. A key feature in this approach is the division between the meta-design (within design research) producing abstract design knowledge and the empirical design practice producing situational knowledge and artefacts. The multi-grounding approach to design research will be illustrated by the support of two design cases.

  • Fences or stacks : theoretical considerations regarding references in patents
  • 2022
  • record:In_t: Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Conceptions of Library and Information Science, Oslo Metropolitan University, May 29 - June 1, 2022. - Borås : Högskolan i Borås.

    • Introduction Patent citations are an important indicator for studying science and technology interaction. Yet, empirical and conceptual studies of referencing practices in patents are largely lacking, which has resulted in an under-theorised understanding of patent citations.Theoretical approach This study analyses previous research on patent citations and discusses these in relation to citation theories developed within science studies and bibliometrics. The ambition is, however, to advance beyond a comparative approach by adding an additional layer of analysis in which the overarching rhetorical function of references in patents and papers is considered.Conceptual Analysis The analysis shows how referencing in patents have distinguishing characteristics in terms of who cites, the temporality of referencing, national and international context, quantity of references, and incentives for citing. These characteristics are discussed using the concept of fencing and stacking. Fencing illustrates how references in patents are used to demarcate claims, while the stacking of references in scientific papers is an act of cumulative persuasion. Conclusions Substantial rhetorical and epistemological differences exist in how references are used in patents and papers, and these differences have implications for how citations patterns can be interpreted. The conceptualisation of referencing as fencing and stacking is suggested as a possible framework for interpreting empirical studies of patent citations. Overall, it is argued that a further theoretical, and empirical, understanding of referencing practices in patents are need in order to contextualise and problematise patent citations, and their current use in research and policy.

  • EMIm-OTf Ionogel Coated Fibres - Characterisation and Development, Aiming at Ionic Smart Textiles
  • 2021
  • swepub:Mat_conferencepaper_t (swepub:level_scientificother_t)abstract
    • Ions are prevalent within bioelectronics, as they are the main charge carriers in living systems. In contrast to electronic systems, ionic ones are closer to what can be found in our body; in muscles, neurons and nerves.Textiles are a much-used biomedical material, both in vivo and in vitro due to its membrane character, highly efficient area, softness, biocompatibility and biodegradability. Modifying the physicochemical properties of the core or the surface of textile has been reported a countless number of times, but still, its use in a bioelectrical context is limited.Fibres are the building blocks of textiles and what make textiles an architected class of material. Then ionically conductive fibres are of great interest. Here, we show the preparation of iono-conductive textile fibres through the (semi-)continuous dip-coating of ionogel on the cellulose-based viscose.Ionogels are composed of salts in liquid state and a 3-dimensional solid network, in our case an ionic liquid (IL), 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate, commonly named EMIm OTf or EMIm Triflate, and a thiol acrylate network, allowing the mobility of the ions within or in/out of the gel. This specific combination is a first effort towards the development of ionic textile fibres and ionic smart textiles, as a variety of ILs with different cations and anions exists, potentially allowing a large number of different combinations. We investigate how the coating of this ionogel affects the mechanical properties as well as the conductivity in AC or DC arrangement and their relation to temperature and humidity. Also, the thermal stability and sensitivity of degradation of the fibre system is studied. Moreover, we introduce different textile structures, and potential applications directed to bioelectronics.

  • Woven and knitted artificial muscles for wearable devices
  • 2019
  • swepub:Mat_conferencepaper_t (swepub:level_scientificother_t)abstract
    • Diseases of the nervous system, traumas, or natural causes can reduce human muscle capacity. Robotic exoskeletons are forthcoming to support the movement of body parts, e.g. assist walking or aid rehabilitation. Current available devices are rigid and driven by electric motors or pneumatic actuators, making them noisy, heavy, stiff and noncompliant. We are developing textile based assistive devices that can be worn like clothing being light, soft, compliant and comfortable. We have merged advanced textile technology with electroactive polymers. By knitting and weaving electroactive yarns, we are developing soft textile actuators ("Knitted Muscles") that can be used in wearable assistive devices. We will present the latest progress increase the performance and to rationalise the fabrication. In addition we will show some demonstrators of the textile exoskeletons.

  • Implementing Innovation Management
  • 2012
  • record:In_t: Book of Abstracts. ; , s. 1-6
  • swepub:Mat_conferencepaper_t (swepub:level_scientificother_t)abstract
    • In this paper, we will reflect on implementing innovation in Library and Information Science in Boras, Sweden. In our role as lecturers in Library and Information science we develop courses trying to match the complex needs of the Swedish society, and even in relation to the needs in Europe in change. The starting point for our reflexion on the needs of innovation is the statement made by Octavia-Luciana Porumbeanu in her article Implementing Knowledge Management in Romanian Academic Libraries: Identifying the Elements that Characterize their Organisational Culture (2010, p. 549): one of the most useful solutions that can be adopted in order to survive and to be successful in a society is to implement a knowledge management process, this is specially true of countries like Romania, with a rapidly developing economy, following the collapse of the post-war communist regime. We mean that even Sweden is struggling for survival and success, from their point of view being a well-done country. It is not enough with knowledge only; there is also a need of innovation. There are many people having knowledge and good skills but how to stimulate and learn the students to take advantage of their brain and possibilities out there, perhaps when organizing the knowledge of other people in their future role? In this paper we will present an ongoing case about an ongoing development with focus on a course called Project management, development and evaluation. In focus in this discussion there is the need of developing the often so called library culture, new kind of managers and the ability to add value to ideas in a way that is derivate from the reality. In other words, also, there is a need for implementing innovation management processes. We will develop our case from the educational theories and the nature of innovation and societal innovation system improvement in Sweden, and especially at the Swedish school of a library and information science in Boras.
