    • GCCSI Webinar: Cutting Cost of CO2 Capture in Process Industry (CO2stCap) Project overview & first results for partial CO2 capture at integrated steelworks This publication has the format of a webinar: The CO2StCap project is a four year initiative carried out by industry and academic partners with the aim of reducing capture costs from CO2 intensive industries (more information here). The project, led by Tel-Tek, is based on the idea that cost reduction is possible by capturing only a share of the CO2 emissions from a given facility, instead of striving for maximized capture rates. This can be done in multiple ways, for instance by capturing only from the largest CO2 sources at individual multi-stack sites utilising cheap waste heat or adapting the capture volumes to seasonal changes in operations. The main focus of this research is to perform techno-economic analyses for multiple partial CO2 capture concepts in order to identify economic optimums between cost and volumes captured. In total for four different case studies are developed for cement, iron & steel, pulp & paper and ferroalloys industries. The first part of the webinar gave an overview of the project with insights into the cost estimation method used. The second part presented the iron & steel industry case study based on the Lulea site in Sweden, for which waste-heat mapping methodology has been used to assess the potential for partial capture via MEA-absorption. Capture costs for different CO2 sources were discussed, demonstrating the viability of partial capture in an integrated steelworks.

  • Holistic Approach to Sustainable Bridge Procurement Considering LCC, LCA, Lifespan, User-Cost and Aesthetics : Case Study

    • An efficient procurement method is the primary initiator of sustainablebridge infrastructures. Several proposals could provide technically feasiblesolutions for a bridge in a certain location, all of which may provide therequired function, but differ substantially in life-cycle cost (LCC), servicelife-span, user-cost, aesthetic merit and environmental impact. A newparameter, LCC Added-Value, has been recently developed to facilitateprocurement of the most LCC-efficient alternative through fair design-build(D-B) tendering. However, integration of environmental, aesthetic and user-costconsiderations in bridge procurement decisions is also required. This paperintroduces a holistic procurement approach designed to enable procurement ofthe most sustainable (lifecycle-efficient) bridge under D-B contracts. Theapproach combines LCC Added-Value analysis with other novel techniques thatmake proposals’ aesthetic merit and environmental impact commensurable, therebyenabling agencies to establish monetary benchmarks concerning those aspects inan early planning phase and embed them in the tender documents as corespecifications. The lowest net equivalent LCC bid could then be used as thecontract award criterion. A presented case study illustrates the practicalimplementation of the approach, addresses roles of both contractors andagencies in it, provides insights into the various bridge aspects and identifiesshortcomings requiring further attention.

    • This dataset includes data related to water sorption analyses to support research findings stated in the article:"Experimental evaluation of a rubber-epoxy polymeric system used in the rehabilitation of sewer infrastructure: a case study in Sweden" with the following abstract: One rehabilitation method used mainly for wastewater sewers in residential buildings involves applying a rubber-epoxy composite to the inner surface of the aged pipeline. In order to understand the material’s performance and stability in operation, during which it is constantly exposed to deteriorative factors, the properties of the material were studied in the laboratory under artificial water and air aging conditions. Changes in the material were monitored by means of tests such as thermal analyses, mechanical testing and water absorption assessment.

  • Pyrolysis of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) on a single screw reactor for bromine free oil production

    • This study focuses on pyrolysis on waste electrical and electronic equipment or WEEE as it is usually referred in the literature. A new auger reactor has been designed and tested with WEEE material. The performance of the reactor as well as the fate of the bromine has been investigated and evaluated in order to be used for designing of industrial process. The mass balance calculations performed for the tested cases of 400, 500 and 600 °C, showed a high gas yield (44%) at the temperature of 600 °C, which can be used to fulfil the process energy needs. At the low temperature of 400 °C the oil production reach its maximum yield, while the bromine content of the oil has also a maximum percentage of 0.5% wt. Several valuable compounds have been detected in the oil composition, which can be used either as fuels or for feedstock recycling.

The device also comprises a third layer (120) of a paraelectric phase material between the first (110) and second (120) layers, so that one of said first or second surfaces of the first and second layers face the third layer. The device (100, 200) additionally comprises a non-conducting supporting structure (160) on which the device rests, and comprises means (DC) for applying a DC voltage across the third layer (160), so that the device by means of varying the applied DC voltage may be made to alter its electrical characteristics between that of a capacitor, a short circuit or an open circuit.

    • This dataset includes original data to support parts of research findings stated in the article: ”Durability evaluation of reinforced glass-flake polyester material used in rehabilitation of sewer lines in buildings”. Currently, different materials and methods are in use in alternative rehabilitations technologies for sewer renewal. This work was conducted to study one of these materials, which is a glass -flake reinforced polyester polymeric system, during artificial aging to provide a better understanding of the material’s performance under operating conditions when it is regularly exposed to degrading factors such as high temperature and water. Changes in the material during aging were monitored by conducting different tests, including thermal and mechanical analysis, water absorption and microscopy.
