  • Guardian Angel : Using Lighting Drones to Improve Traffic Safety, Sense of Security, and Comfort for Cyclists
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science. - Cham : Springer. - 9783031480461 - 9783031480478 ; , s. 209-223
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Active mobility, such as biking, faces a common challenge in Swedish municipalities due to the lack of adequate lighting during the dark winter months. Insufficient lighting infrastructure hinders individuals from choosing bicycles, despite the presence of well-maintained bike paths and a willingness to cycle. To address this issue, a project has been undertaken in the Swedish municipality of Skara for an alternative lighting solution using drones. A series of tests have been conducted based on drone prototypes developed for the selected bike paths. Participants were invited to cycle in darkness illuminated by drone lighting and share their mobility preferences and perception. This paper summarizes the users’ perception of drone lighting as an alternative to fixed lighting on bike paths, with a special focus on the impact on travel habits and the perceived sense of security and comfort. Most participants were regular cyclists who cited bad weather, time, and darkness as significant factors that deterred them from using bicycles more frequently, reducing their sense of security. With drone lighting, the participants appreciated the illumination’s moonlight-like quality and its ability to enhance their sense of security by illuminating the surroundings. On the technology side, they gave feedback on reducing the drone’s sound and addressing lighting stability issues. In summary, the test results showcase the potential of drone lighting as a viable alternative to traditional fixed lighting infrastructure, offering improved traffic safety, sense of security, and comfort. The results show the feasibility and effectiveness of this innovative approach, supporting transformation towards active and sustainable mobility, particularly in regions facing lighting challenges.

  • Multi-objective optimization of material model parameters of an adhesive layer by using SPEA2
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Advances in structural and multidisciplinary optimization. - : The International Society for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (ISSMO). - 9780646943947 ; , s. 249-254
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The usage of multi material structures in industry, especially in the automotive industry are increasing. To overcome the difficulties in joining these structures, adhesives have several benefits over traditional joining methods. Therefore, accurate simulations of the entire process of fracture including the adhesive layer is crucial. In this paper, material parameters of a previously developed meso mechanical finite element (FE) model of a thin adhesive layer are optimized using the Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm (SPEA2). Objective functions are defined as the error between experimental data and simulation data. The experimental data is provided by previously performed experiments where an adhesive layer was loaded in monotonically increasing peel and shear. Two objective functions are dependent on 9 model parameters (decision variables) in total and are evaluated by running two FEsimulations, one is loading the adhesive layer in peel and the other in shear. The original study converted the two objective functions into one function that resulted in one optimal solution. In this study, however, a Pareto frontis obtained by employing the SPEA2 algorithm. Thus, more insight into the material model, objective functions, optimal solutions and decision space is acquired using the Pareto front. We compare the results and show good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Swedish folk high school as a second chance to attain acess to university
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: NCEE 2011.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Folk high schools are part of popular, or liberal adult education in Sweden. By participating in the general course at a folk high school, students who have failed to meet the requirements necessary for continued study at university level have a second chance to fulfil such requirements. This paper describes different approaches of Swedish folk high schools with regard to preparing their participants for university studies. The paper also discusses how these different ways of working affect how participants perceive university studies and how these perceptions affect their choices of whether or not to continue on to university after completion of their folk high school education. Based on empirical data collected through free associations, interviews with then-current and former folk high school participants, articles from a leading folk high school teacher magazine, and material found on the folk high schools’ homepages, the results show that throughout the history of the Swedish folk high school, this institution has remained true to two basic ideas: the idea of differentiation and the idea of adaptation. The results also show that folk high schools work in different ways with regard to widening participation, depending on which of these two ideas they tend to focus on most. The prevalence of these two fundamental ideas explains why different social identities and different representations exist among the participants. The idea of folk high school as something different and special leads to representations of folk high school as an alternative to other forms of education and to representations of university as something difficult and different than folk high school. The second idea – that folk high school must adapt to the surrounding community – leads to representations of folk high school as a second chance and of university as a goal.

  • When 'they' become 'us'
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper elaborates on how representations changes when social identity does. Social representations are not static, representations can change over time, together with the identity. Social identity is not only based on how members of a group represent themselves, but also how the group is represented by others. It is also a representation of ‘we’ as something that is not ‘them’. In my research, I found out that the perception of ‘us’ as folk high school participants is instrumental in the formation of ‘they’, involving, among others, university students. Social representations of university among folk high school participants are often formed by second-hand and reproduced experiences, as participants themselves have not yet studied at university. Most of them have neither visited a university, or know any current or former university students. The folk high school identity is only the object of association during a very short period in a person’s life, for only one or a couple of years, which means that a change of education also leads to a rapid change between identities, i.e. what was previously referred to as ‘they’, becomes ‘us’. However, the key question addressed in this paper is what happens then? This study includes an association study with one hundred participants taking the folk high school general course. In this study, I asked the participants about their associations regarding the words folk high school and university. Five years after the participants from the first association study finished folk high school I called them up and asked them again about their associations regarding the terms folk high school and university. Here I found out that the participants who had continued to university studies, in contrast to the result of the earlier study,  do not represent university as a (final) goal. The other two representations who was common among the folk high school participants – university as a (final) step in a stairway and university as not being folk high school – still occur, but in a quiet different form.

  • Effects of Visualizing Missing Data : An Empirical Evaluation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 18th International Conference on Information Visualisation (IV). - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781479941032 ; , s. 132-138
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an empirical study that evaluates the effects of visualizing missing data on decision-making tasks. A comparison between three visualization techniques: (1) emptiness, (2) fuzziness, and (3) emptiness plus explanation, revealed that the latter technique induced significantly higher degree of decision-confidence than the visualization technique fuzziness. Moreover, emptiness plus explanation yield the highest number of risky choices of the three. This result suggests that uncertainty visualization techniques affect the decision-maker and the decisionconfidence. Additionally, the results indicate a possible relation between the degree of decision-confidence and the decision-maker's displayed risk behavior.

  • Implicit user data in fashion recommendation systems
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Developments of Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Computation and Robotics. - : World Scientific. - 9789811223334 - 9789811223341 - 9789811223327 ; , s. 614-621
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recommendation systems in fashion are used to provide recommendations to users on clothing items, matching styles, and size or fit. These recommendations are generated based on user actions such as ratings, reviews or general interaction with a seller. There is an increased adoption of implicit feedback in models aimed at providing recommendations in fashion. This paper aims to understand the nature of implicit user feedback in fashion recommendation systems by following guidelines to group user actions. Categories of user actions that characterize implicit feedback are examination, retention, reference, and annotation. Each category describes a specific set of actions a user takes. It is observed that fashion recommendations using implicit user feedback mostly rely on retention as a user action to provide recommendations.

  • E-procurement beyond the buyer cost perspective
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 22nd NOFOMA Conference. - Kolding : University of Southern Denmark. - 9788792471055 ; , s. 483-498
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The objective of this paper is to provide and argue for a comprehensive view of e-procurement that involves both the buyer and suppliers and that goes beyond looking at mere cost reductions on the buyer side. More specifically, the paper describes benefits and barriers of implementing e-procurement solutions for both buyers and suppliers.Design/methodology/approach: This paper reports on a literature review combined with a case study. The case is a public organization in Sweden, which prepares to implement an e-procurement solution. Interviews were also conducted with a selection of suppliers to the case organization.Findings: In e-procurement literature, drivers and barriers are often viewed only from the perspective of a buying organization. Benefits are mainly cost-related for the buying organization, while barriers often include suppliers. It is proposed that benefits and barriers should include both buyers and suppliers. The literature review and the case study findings form the basis for further investigation into this problem area.Research limitations/implications: This study focuses on a public organization in Sweden. Yet, it could have implications for many public or private organizations considering implementing e-procurement systems.Practical implications: This research suggest that organizations to a greater extent should take the supplier´s side into account when implementing e-procurement solutions.Originality/Value: The study highlights a full cycle view on e-procurement taking both buyer and supplier into account.

  • Evaluating Multi-Attributes on Cause and Effect Relationship Visualization
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 12th International Joint Conference on Computer Vision, Imaging and Computer Graphics Theory and Applications (VISIGRAPP 2017). - : SciTePress. - 9789897582288 ; , s. 64-74
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents findings about visual representations of cause and effect relationship's direction, strength, and uncertainty based on an online user study. While previous researches focus on accuracy and few attributes, our empirical user study examines accuracy and the subjective ratings on three different attributes of a cause and effect relationship edge. The cause and effect direction was depicted by arrows and tapered lines; causal strength by hue, width, and a numeric value; and certainty by granularity, brightness, fuzziness, and a numeric value. Our findings point out that both arrows and tapered cues work well to represent causal direction. Depictions with width showed higher conjunct accuracy and were more preferred than that with hue. Depictions with brightness and fuzziness showed higher accuracy and were marked more understandable than granularity. In general, depictions with hue and granularity performed less accurately and were not preferred compared to the ones with numbers or with width and brightness.

  • Identifying Root Cause and Derived Effects in Causal Relationships
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Human Interface and the Management of Information: Information, Knowledge and Interaction Design. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319585208 - 9783319585215 ; , s. 22-34
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on identifying factors that influence the process of finding a root cause and a derived effect in causal node-link graphs with associated strength and significance depictions. We discuss in detail the factors that seem to be involved in identifying a global cause and effect based on the analysis of the results of an online user study with 44 participants, who used both sequential and non-sequential graph layouts. In summary, the results show that participants show geodesic-path tendencies when selecting causes and derived effects, and that context matters, i.e., participant’s own beliefs, experiences and knowledge might influence graph interpretation.

  • On the Visualization of Discrete Non-additive Measures
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Aggregation Functions in Theory and in Practice AGOP 2017. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319593067 - 9783319593050 ; , s. 200-210
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Non-additive measures generalize additive measures, and have been utilized in several applications. They are used to represent different types of uncertainty and also to represent importance in data aggregation. As non-additive measures are set functions, the number of values to be considered grows exponentially. This makes difficult their definition but also their interpretation and understanding. In order to support understability, this paper explores the topic of visualizing discrete non-additive measures using node-link diagram representations.
