  • "Business growth" : do practitioners and scholars really talk about the same thing?
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship. - : SAGE Publications. - 1042-2587 .- 1540-6520. ; 43:2, s. 289-316
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current growth literature has stalled over which measures to use in empirical studies, causing a fragmented theory base. This paper claims that there is a third issue that further curbs efforts in developing a better understanding of business growth. Based on a thorough literature review, a quantitative, and a qualitative study, we find that academic scholars and entrepreneurs do not talk about the same thing when they say “business growth.” For practitioners, growth is a more complex phenomenon — with a strong emphasis on internal development — which differs from the simplified conceptualization of growth used in empirical studies.

  • Dynamics of Business Models - Strategizing, Critical Capabilities and Activities for Sustained Value Creation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier BV. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 46:6, s. 427-442
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Much progress has been made recently in developing the business model concept. However, one issue remains poorly understood, despite its importance for managers, policy makers, and academics alike, namely, how companies change and develop their business models to achieve sustained value creation. Companies which manage to create value over extended periods of time successfully shape, adapt and renew their business models to fuel such value creation. Drawing on findings from a research program on continuously growing firms, this paper identifies three critical capabilities, namely an orientation towards experimenting with and exploiting new business opportunities; a balanced use of resources; as well as achieving coherence between leadership, culture, and employee commitment, together shaping key strategizing actions. Moreover, we illustrate how each of these capabilities is supported by different sets of specific activities. Jointly, these three capabilities, their activities and the strategizing actions act as complementarities for value creation. We conclude the paper by suggesting implications for research and practitioners, providing a tool for managers which allows them to reflect on and identify critical issues relevant for changing and developing their business model to sustain value creation.

  • Growth strategies in medium-sized companies - Beyond the dichotomy of organic versus acquired growth
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Current research commonly investigates two different growth strategies, organic growth and growth by acquisitions. Studies on acquisition-based growth typically draw on cross-sectional quantitative studies of large US-based firms, treating all types of acquisitions as one mode. Our study takes a different approach, and explores different growth strategies of a smaller sample of medium-sized companies drawing on a longitudinal, qualitative design. This research design allows us to identify eight different growth modes. Thereby, we illustrate that dynamic growth processes in medium-sized firms are much more diverse and complex than commonly assumed.

  • 2017

Studies on acquisition-based growth typically draw on cross-sectional quantitative studies of large firms that treat all acquisitions the same. Our study takes a different approach, and explores different growth modes of a smaller sample of medium-sized companies drawing on a longitudinal, qualitative case-study design. This research design allows us to identify eight different growth modes that companies combine in unique ways over time. Thereby, we illustrate that patterns of dynamic growth in medium-sized firms are much more diverse and complex than commonly assumed.

  • Becoming manager in a family firm : A gendered path
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women in business have been often described as invisible (Allen & Langowitz, 2003) resulting in calls for research to investigate women’s contributions to family firms (FF) (Martinez Jimenez, 2009). Female employees can legitimately accuse the existence of “glass ceiling” that prevent their advancement in the managerial ranks (Powell, 1999). Compared with male employees in equivalent positions, female employees may find that their perspectives are overlooked and their contributions devalued (Ridgeway et al., 2009).Our interest is in better understanding this discrimination and possible ways to change it. How do education, job tenure, job category and industry knowledge impact on the probability of being promoted to managerial positions in FF and non FF? How does gender moderate this probability? To answer these questions we employee a mixed method approach. In the quantitative part, we adopt a longitudinal dataset produced by Statistics Sweden with annual observations on all Swedish privately held firms, Swedish inhabitants, and family ties. This allow us to reconstruct the career path of all the employees that received a promotion to a managerial position in a Swedish company in the last 10 years. Our unique dataset allows us to match their salaries and career development recognizing the existence of gender discrimination. These results will be illustrated through a qualitative part, with interesting cases offering an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon. Our results confirm the existence of gender discrimination, for example in the salary paid by Swedish companies. Understanding the impact of educational choices, job categories and family choices on career paths for men and women, offers fundamental insights for managers, HR specialists, and policy makers. Moreover, it provides a unique opportunity for this interactive workshop to discuss the family business values, and how to develop a stronger family business responsibility against gender discriminations.

  • Proactive and reactive plots : Narratives in entrepreneurial identity construction
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1756-6266 .- 1756-6274. ; 3:3, s. 218-235
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to offer a new perspective on entrepreneurial identity as a narrative construction, emerging in stories about entering the family business.Design/methodology/approach – The qualitative methodological approach involves an interpretative analysis of transcribed interviews conducted in narrative style with 12 women from Swedish family businesses.Findings – By presenting entrepreneurial identity as a combination of two distinct narratives, the “passive” entrance into the family business is highlighted. The “Pippi Longstocking” narrative illustrates conscious choices, drive and motivation based on an entrepreneurial identification: the proactive plot. The “Alice in Wonderland” narrative on the other hand, illustrates women who happen to become entrepreneurs or business persons because the family business was there: the reactive plot. The contrasting and complementing narratives illustrate ambiguities in the identity process.Practical implications – The authors identified the following opportunities for women in family business: the family business can offer easy access to a career and on-the-job learning opportunities; education in other areas can be useful when learning how to manage and develop the family business; and the family business offers a generous arena for pursuing a career at different life stages. Implications for education as well as for policy makers are also presented.Originality/value – The narratives presented are given metaphorical names with the intention to evoke the reader's reflection and reasoning by analogy, which can lead to new insights. The use of metaphors illustrates multiple layers and ambiguities in identity construction. Metaphors can also create awareness of the researcher as a co-creator of knowledge.
