  • Access to Information in the Nordic Countries : A comparison of the laws of Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Iceland and international rules
  • 2014
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Principles of freedom of information require authorities and other public agencies to provide access to authentic documents and data. The demand for authenticity is the raison d’être of the right-of-access principle. This publication Access to Information in the Nordic Countries explains and compares the legal rules determining public access to documents and data in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland. In addition, international rules emanating from the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the European Union are elucidated. Free access to public records is crucial to democratic control and participation. Rules of law and legal practice concerning access and secrecy are of far-reaching significance to all sectors of society and to the relation- ship between citizens and the state. Access to Information in the Nordic Countries demonstrates that, in the five Nordic countries, right-of-access rules are very different and show no consistent pattern. A country with the best conditions in some areas may have poor conditions in others. This publication in English is based on a more comprehensive version in Danish published in Nordicom-Information No 3/2014, Nordicom, University of Gothenburg.

  • After the Tsunami : crisis communication in Finland and Sweden
  • 2009
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia during Christmas 2004 caused many deaths among vacationers from Finland and Sweden. It could be described as one of the worst catastrophes experienced during the post-war period in these countries. This book examines how this dramatic and unexpected event affected public communication patterns and practices in countries like Finland and Sweden. The communicative relations between government actors, the media and citizens always significantly affect the development of crucial democratic values such as trust, accountability and legitimacy. The book covers different topics related to this issue, such as strategic political communication, media coverage, newsroom practices, public opinion and the use of new media in Finland and Sweden after the tsunami disaster.

  • Ambivalence towards Convergence. Digitalization and Media Change
  • 2007
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Concepts of convergence and converging processes have triggered considerable attention and activities in media research during recent years. This has been an inspiring context for the discussions and analyses presented in this book. The book elucidates a variety of understandings related to the concept of convergence, and at the same time reflects on the analytical advantage of the concept. The contributions discuss the impact of media digitalization and the degree to which the prospects of convergence have been realized. The studies range from investigations of institutional and regulatory change within media and cultural institutions, to analyses of communicative genres and social practices related to digital media.

  • Bokläsning i den digitala tidsåldern. Aktuella undersökningar från Nordicom och SOM-institutet : Changes in media and cultural habits
  • 2004
Även denna artikel ingår i föreliggande volym.

  • Children and youth in the digital media culture. From a Nordic horizon. Yearbook 2010
  • 2011
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Clearinghouse on Children Youth and Media has published eleven yearbooks to date. In them, researchers and experts from all the corners of the world have treated a wide variety of issues from many different perspectives. The global dimension is a core principle in the work of the Clearinghouse with respect to both the content we publish and distribute and the contributors who produce it. This, the twelfth Yearbook, represents a departure from that hallowed principle of global representation. The present Yearbook showcases the Nordic countries and the work being done in the research communities of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The focus rests on children, youth and media in a digitized media culture. We believe that the issues treated here will interest a broad range of readers all over the world. Content: Young people in the digital media culture. Global and Nordic perspectives. An introduction (Ulla Carlsson). Part I. Media literacy: Importance and challenges: Democratic digital literacies. Three obstacles in search of a solution (Kirsten Drotner), Paths towards digital competencies. Naïve participation or civic engagement? (Ola Erstad), 2.0 – Children in and outside school (Birgitte Holm Sørensen), Global digital culture requires skills in media literacies (Sirkku Kotilainen), and Understanding media literacy (Tapio Varis). Part II. Young people and the Nordic digital media culture: From TV viewing to participatory cultures. Reflections on childhood in transition (Ingegerd Rydin & Ulrika Sjöberg), The extensions of youth. • Communicating Politics. Political Communication in the Nordic Countries
  • 2008
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Modern politics is mediated politics, and the media constitute the most important source of information and channel of communication between the governors and the governed. Media and politics are thus inextricable linked together, with the media playing an important role in contemporary democracies and for political processes. While this is true for virtually all advanced democracies, there are still important differences between countries depending on, for example, their media systems and political systems. The purpose of Communicating Politics: Political Communication in the Nordic Countries is consequently to de-scribe and analyze both the political communication systems and cases of political communication processes in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Taken together, the chapters explore differences as well as similarities between the Nordic countries, and provide a broad view of political communication systems, practices and research perspectives in the Nordic countries.

  • Communicating risks. Towards the threat society
  • 2011
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Communicating risks is an increasingly complicated task in contemporary society. Risks travel physically as well as discursively between continents, countries and cultures. Globalization itself has actualized new alleged risks in politics, media and public debates. Globalization and conflicts have become major issues. The growth of xenophobia and populism of various kinds has lead to dramatic changes in geographical and mental maps. In what direction globalization will take us depends on how the media portray the possibilities and problems associated with it. This volume is a contribution to these discussions, particularly with respect to the theme of media representations of identity conflicts connected to imagined dangers and risks in late modernity. It provides analytical tools for improved understanding of the multifaceted ways in which communication about different kinds of threats relates to social and cultural integration and hence has consequences for trust and legitimacy in society. One major focus is on the media’s role and the consequences of mediatized risk constructions as threats. But the authors also study risk rhetoric in various contexts, threat and risk communication within organizational settings, management decisions in media companies when a mega-news item breaks, citizens’ use of and expectations regarding mobile emergency call techniques or how communication systems for incident reports cause internal identity and competence conflicts. The authors are leading researchers in the field of mediated risk communication and rhetoric in the Nordic countries. Contents: Introduction (Stig A. Nohrstedt), Threat society and the media (Stig A. Nohrstedt), Risk communication from a rhetorical perspective (Birgitte Mral, Helena Hansson & Orla Vigsø), Journalistic norms, organizational identity and crisis decision-making in PSB news organizations (Johanna Jääsaari & Eva-Karin Olsson), The “climate threat” and constructions of identity in Swedish news media (Ulrika Olausson), What is threatening the west? Islam/communism, religion/politics and the rational/irrational discourse (Anna Roosvall), Constructing ‘close’ and ‘distant’ muslim identities. The Mohammed cartoon in the Swedish newspaper Nerikes Allehanda (Leonor Camauër), “[O]ne should not say anything with which one’s enemies agree”. Norms of rhetorical citizenship in the danish foreign policy debate (Lisa S. Villadsen), Conceptions of emergency calls. Emergency communication in an age of mobile communication and prevalence of anxiety (Mats Eriksson), and Discourses and identity positionings in chemical plant employees’ accounts of incident reporting (Joel Rasmussen).
