- The aim of the project: This report on the situation of urban archaeology in Gävle is written as part of the project The Medieval Town: Implications of Early Urbanization for Modern Planning, under the auspices of Riksantikvarieämbetet and Statens historiska museer. The aim of the project is to make a detailed survey and documentation of the situation of urban archaeology and its implications for physical planning and make a scholarly evaluation of the uncovered material. The project deals mainly with those places which obtained town rights in the formal legal sense during the Middle Ages.The arrangement of the report: Chapters 1 and 2 give an account of a number of data which in various ways are important for the early development of the town. The information is collected from available literature (mainly as regards documentary material) as well as from primary material in the archives (archaeological data, records from borings). In the firstmentioned case no attempt has been made to correct possible faults through independent research. As regards the archaeological material, the aim has been to include all archaeological observations, even if for different reasons this has not always been possible.One important aim during work on the report has been to appraise and evaluate the archaeological material and to what extent it throws light on essential problems concerning urban history. The basic idea is that archaeological material can provide information about chronology, function, social structure and economic basis. The material has been arranged on the assumption that the form of settlement which took place and is reflected in the archaeological material is the result of a functional adaption to certain decisive prerequisites such as topography, communications, and economical-geographical conditions.The data have been chosen and structured on this basis. The selection gives both a general view of the available material concerning the development of the medieval town and a basis for further work on this material. This in turn will provide a foundation for the antiquarian evaluation in relation to future work.The English summary gives a broad outline of the contents, mainly based on the maps of the report. The value of work experience in higher education : a study of work experience as a substitute for formal academic entrance requirements

- The Swedish policy that work experience can be used as a substitute for formal academic entrance requirements for higher education is assessed. The social and economic background of introducing work experience in higher education policy is described, and the significance of work experience to enrollment patterns and for the form and content of higher education is addressed. The general characteristics of the Swedish admissions system and the effects on recruitment and admissions are outlined. Additionally, the effects of work experience on the educational process are considered from a theoretical viewpoint. Distinctions are made between three different functions of work experience as a ground for admission: work experience as a substitute for upper secondary school education (alternative route) for adults; additional credit in selection for all students; and formal requirement for admission to some study programs. Work experience also is classified as a basis for academic studies according to its content (relevant professional experience, work experience, in general, and life experience). The admissions schemes in Sweden and Denmark are compared, and those found in a few other countries are briefly noted. Some Swedish findings regarding different ways of valuing work experience as an admission criterion are summarized. It is suggested that institutions that are mainly oriented toward traditional groups do not have the same possibilities of using experience as do institutions with an educational design oriented toward nontraditional students. - The project described is part of a followup to the Swedish university reform of 1977, of which the emphasis on work experience is a central feature. The purpose is to document Swedish and other nations' conditions for using work experience in some college curricula. Theoretical background for the study is described, treating work experience not as a resource in itself but rather most useful when related to a curriculum. The interrelationship of work, study skills, and critical thinking is discussed. It is felt that the prevailing concept of adult education does not adequately incorporate critical thinking and information assimilation. The project is scheduled to work from January 1980 through June 1981. The first phase consists of compilation of documentation and the development of instruments for case studies. Phase two consists of the examination of a number of courses of study. Phase three is for analysis of the case studies and examination of international experiences in this area. In phase four, three courses of study are looked at in depth. The final phase is dedicated to developing a final report. A brief list of references is included
