- This thesis focuses on Russian case syntax, more particularly on variable verbal government (rection) in the period 1800-1840. Variable rectional patterns in two major groups are examined: non-prepositional and prepositional rection. The period under examination coincides with the establishment of the literary norm.As the aim is to examine the usage of the spoken language among the educated classes in Nineteenth-Century Russia, an extensive body of material consisting of letters, diaries, memoirs and plays has been used.An important place is assigned to the historical background of the rection of the verbs examined. The reasons for variation between case forms are analysed and contrasted with the conclusions of nineteenth-century philologists. Various factors which influenced Russian verbal rection during this period, including the syntactic influence of French, are analysed. This has never been done before in a systematic way.Conclusions about the predominant as the more infrequent rectional patterns are supported by statistics on the incidence of all the various rectional patterns.The study shows that:- the majority of verbs during this period had modern rectional patterns;- the obvious cases of variation were exhibited in the period 1800-1820;- the exhibited variation was in most cases inherited from earlier epochs.

- This thesis is a contribution to a growing field of studies on the reception of Byzantine culture in Russia. The object of investigation is the history of the Church Slavonic translation of the Cherubika, which constitute one of the most ancient and dogmatically important functional genres of Byzantine liturgical hymns. The chronological frame of this study is the 13th–17th century. Particular attention is focused on the last change in the liturgical texts in Muscovite Russia, in the mid-17th century. This liturgical reform, which led to the famous Schism in the Russian Church, is studied as part of the cultural reforms started by Tsar Alexis Romanov (1645-1676).The most characteristic feature of Orthodoxy is the principal unity of Scripture and Tradition, which in a hermeneutical perspective means the inseparability of text and context. The semiotic and interdisciplinary approach used in this study reflects this principle. The Slavic Cherubika are interpreted in a broad cultural perspective, and Church Slavonic translations are studied in the proper theological, rhetorical and linguistic contexts.Although the 17th-century translations made in Moscow were based on late Greek and South Slavic sources, they reconstruct the original dogmatic message of the Byzantine Cherubika and are hence closer to the Tradition than earlier Slavonic translations.This study offers a new interpretation of the nature of the Schism. It is shown that the main cause of the controversy between Reformists and Old Believers lies in their different understandings of the connection between Text and Ritual. The traditional medieval interpretation of the Cherubika is influenced by certain iconographical themes, other liturgical texts and the priest’s actions during the liturgy. The transition from a liturgocentric interpretation of sacral texts to a descriptive theological interpretation was a break from the characteristic Russian form of liturgocentrism and the beginning of a new cultural era.

- This doctoral disseration examines the legend of the invisible city of Kitezh, its development and the role that it played in Russian culture between the years 1843 and 1940. It was during this period that the original folk legend was discovered by the Russian intelligentsia and transformed into a new myth about Russia. The legend is widely known and is the subject of a large number of publications and scholarly works. However, no research had yet been undertaken that presents a holistic account, which is what this dissertation attempts to do.

- This dissertation carries out a codicological and palaeographic investigation of Slavic parchment fragments taken from Russia to Sweden as war booty during a period of Swedish-Russian cultural interactions and military conflicts in the late 16th – early 17th centuries. The fragments in question were kept in Sweden until the beginning of the 19th century and mostly used as accounting binders. After 1809, some accounting records of Finnish territories (along with their parchment covers) were transferred from Sweden to Finland. Among them were accounting records with Slavic covers. In Finland, the parchment covers were removed from the accounting books and administrative documents that they had enclosed and sent to the University Library in Helsinki (now the National Library of Finland). In 1869, the Slavic fragments stored in Finland were donated to the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg and then preserved in the Academy’s library (BAN, collection “Finliandskie otryvki”). Two Slavic fragments later came to England with George Stephens’ collection. Thus, the Slavic fragments are now held in archives, libraries and museums in four countries (Sweden, England, Finland and Russia). I use the designation The Swedish Collection of Slavic Parchment Fragments to refer to these four collections, once preserved in Sweden as part of a larger Swedish collection (the largest collection of medieval parchment fragments in Europe).All the parchment fragments belonging to the Swedish collection are undated, i.e. they have no inscriptions or additional information about the scribe, owner or patron, which would make it possible to immediately establish the time and place of their creation. This circumstance determined my choice of method for the analysis of the preserved fragments. They are studied in a comprehensive manner that combines codicological, palaeographic, historical and linguistic analysis. This has made it possible to pursue the study of the fragments in different directions, and to obtain the new specific and more general results presented in this dissertation.The palaeographic method of identifying scribes on the basis of their handwriting enabled me to connect different fragments with each other as well as with comparative manuscripts, and to determine their origins in the Mediaeval scriptoria of ancient Rus′: they were produced not only in Novgorod, but also in Pskov, Rostov and Moscow.
