    • Language evaluation for various purposes is an often repeated exercise in industry and academia. Due to the large number of influencing factors the dependence of the result on implicit or explicit assumptions is not always apparent and clear. Based on a systematic evaluation method with a large number of criteria we compare six languages with respect to the suitability as a system specification and description language for telecom applications. The languages under evaluation are VHDL, C++, SDL, Haskell, Erlang, and ProGram, which represent different paradigms. The evaluation method allows to give specific emphasis on particular aspects in a controlled way, which we use to make separate comparisons for pure software systems, pure hardware systems and mixed HW/SW systems.

  • Creep behaviour, creep damage and precipitation in the austenitic ductile cast iron D5S at 750 °C

    • The austenitic ductile cast iron D5S, used for exhaust manifolds in heavy-duty truck engines, was creep tested at 750 °C in air under constant load with initial stresses of 18.5–50 MPa. Four of the specimens (20–50 MPa) were tested to rupture (22–5476 h) and the remaining one (18.5 MPa) was interrupted in the secondary creep regime after 6494 h. Secondary creep was generally predominant at lower stresses whereas primary and tertiary creep were predominant at higher stresses. The damage was characterized by various types of voids/creep cavities around the graphite nodules which were interlinked by shear cracks upon fracture. The results show that significant amounts of finely dispersed Cr7C3 carbides, larger Fe2Ni2Si particles, and an unknown carbide precipitated during creep exposure. Dislocation substructures which had developed during creep were revealed through EBSD.

    • In this work, high-performance four-terminal solution-processed tandem solar cells were fabricated by using dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) as top-cells and lead sulfide (PbS) colloidal quantum dot solar cells (CQDSCs) as bottom-cells. For dye-sensitized top-cells, three different dye combinations were used while the titanium dioxide (TiO2) scattering layer was removed to maximize the transmission. For the PbS bottom-cells, quantum dots with different sizes were compared. Over 12% power conversion efficiency has been achieved by using the XL dye mixture and 890 nm PbS QDs, which shows a significant efficiency enhancement when compared to single DSSC or CQDSC subcells.

  • Creep, strain and oxidation damage in the ferritic ductile cast iron SiMo51 at 700°C

    • The ferritic ductile cast iron, SiMo51, with graphite nodules and grain boundary carbides, was tested at 700°C with respect to creep, uniaxial strain and oxidation, investigating the internal damage evolution. Creep curves, with total lives of 65–339 days, show a short primary creep followed by predominantly tertiary creep displaying two stages. The first was associated with cavitation around carbides and nodules with a short initial effect from oxidation. The second was associated with the formation of cracks through linking of elongated voids. Misorientation maps demonstrate local dislocation activity during creep and tensile testing. Oxidation tests, between 15 min and 2 weeks, show that three oxide layers are formed and that an innermost precipitation zone of SiO2 is present in the initial stage. Elemental line scans, compared with thermodynamic calculations, suggest the layers are FeO with precipitates of SiO2 and/or Fe2SiO4, FeO without precipitates, and Fe2O3.

    • Cyclic deformations of two ferritic, ductile cast irons, SiMo51 and SiMo1000, were studied in air and Ar using a new method, SRTC (stress relaxation with thermal cycling). Locked specimens were thermally cycled up to 800 °C with isothermal holds, varying temperature interval, heating/cooling rates and hold times. A description of the mechanical response to thermal cycling of a locked specimen is given.

  • Underwater communication link with iterative equalization

    • In this paper an acoustic underwater communication link is presented. The channel has severe inter symbol interference, which is dealt with by an iterative linear equalizer and a Turbo code. Experiments has been performed in the Baltic Sea using a 4QAM signal with bandwidth 4 kHz at a center frequency of 12 kHz. The raw data rate is 8 kbit/s but after reduction for error correction coding the net bit rate is 2.88 kbit/s. With a source level of 180 dB re. 1mu/Pa @ 1m and a single hydrophone receiver, a reliable communication is shown up to a distance of 60 km. Very important for a successful decoding is the initial synchronization, which also is discussed.
