  • Understanding the needs for support and coping strategies in grief following the loss of a significant other: insights from a cross-sectional survey in Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Palliative Care and Social Practice. ; 18:January-December 2024
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Background: Grief has previously been described in pathological terms, characterized by several stages. In the past three decades, new perspectives on grief as a reaction to the loss of a significant other have emerged. It shows that grief is an individual process based on circumstances surrounding the death and the bereaved person’s life situation, rather than being predetermined. Objective: The aim of the study was to show how grief is perceived by people who have lost a significant other, and it focuses on bereavement support, how the death affects the bereaved person’s living conditions, how the bereaved person deals with grief, and if grief is expressed differently depending on whether it was an expected death (ED) or an unexpected death (UED). Design: A cross-sectional design was used with data collected anonymously using an online survey with semi-structured answers and options for participants to add their own comments, and it was analyzed descriptively. Result: Support in grief was mainly given by family and friends, and the perceived need was primarily for emotional support or emotional support combined with practical support, and to a greater extent for UEDs and women. For some bereaved persons, health caregivers and religious institutions provided support outside their own network. Grief can affect how people socialize with others and change social relationships. People can deal with grief in social as well as religious ways in the company of friends, through everyday conversations, spending time in nature, and having a spiritual outlook on life, and with the help of pets. Conclusion: The results can contribute to an increased understanding of grief after the loss of a significant other and how grief affects the bereaved person’s life depending on whether it is an ED or a UED. There was a difference between the genders, with women perceiving a need for and receiving different forms of support and to a greater extent than men.

  • Person-centered care -ready for prime time.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing. - : Sage Publications. - 1474-5151 .- 1873-1953. ; 10:4, s. 248-251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Long-term diseases are today the leading cause of mortality worldwide and are estimated to be the leading cause of disability by 2020. Person-centered care (PCC) has been shown to advance concordance between care provider and patient on treatment plans, improve health outcomes and increase patient satisfaction. Yet, despite these and other documented benefits, there are a variety of significant challenges to putting PCC into clinical practice. Although care providers today broadly acknowledge PCC to be an important part of care, in our experience we must establish routines that initiate, integrate, and safeguard PCC in daily clinical practice to ensure that PCC is systematically and consistently practiced, i.e. not just when we feel we have time for it. In this paper, we propose a few simple routines to facilitate and safeguard the transition to PCC. We believe that if conscientiously and systematically applied, they will help to make PCC the focus and mainstay of care in long-term illness.

  • Literacy Demands and Information to Cancer Patients
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Text, Speech and Dialogue. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 0302-9743. - 9783642327896
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines language complexity of written health information materials for patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. Written and printed patient information from 28 Swedish clinics are automatically analyzed by means of language technology. The analysis reveals different problematic issues that might have impact on readability. The study is a first step, and part of a larger project about patients’ health information seeking behavior in relation to written information material. Our study aims to provide support for producing more individualized, person centered information materials according to preferences for complex and detailed or legible texts and thus enhance a movement from receiving information and instructions to participating in knowing. In the near future the study will continue by integrating focus groups with patients that may provide valuable feedback and enhance our knowledge about patients’ use and preferences of different information material.

  • Deconstructing spiritual care: Discursive underpinnings within palliative care research
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nursing Inquiry. - 1320-7881. ; 31:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Religion and spirituality are integral to the philosophy of palliative care, shaping its approach to spiritual care. This article aims to examine the discourses within palliative care research to illuminate prevailing assumptions regarding spiritual care. Eighteen original articles were analyzed to examine how spiritual care is understood within palliative care. The analysis, informed by Foucault, aimed to identify recurring discourses. The finding reveals that, in palliative care research, spirituality is viewed as enigmatic yet inherently human and natural, assuming that every individual has a spiritual dimension. The analysis points to healthcare professionals being expected to hold certain qualities to put spiritual care into practice. The analysis also reveals that in the analyzed articles, the concept of spiritual care is rooted in a Christian context, with the belief that all individuals possess inherent spirituality or religiosity, a concept often associated with Christian theology. The included articles often utilize theological terms and emphasize a monotheistic viewpoint. Spirituality is articulated as a complex, distinct concept, challenging clear definitions and professional responsibilities. Further, a moral formation of healthcare professionals is described, interpelling and ascribing qualities that healthcare professionals need to provide spiritual care.

  • Livshjälp, dödshjälp och palliativ vård i livets slut
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Livshjälp, dödshjälp och palliativ vård. - Stockholm : Svensk sjuksköterskeförening. - 9789185060764 ; , s. 4-15

  • Personhood: Philosophies, applications and critiques in healthcare
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nursing Philosophy. - Chichester : Wiley. - 1466-7681 .- 1466-769X. ; 23:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • ‘Personhood’ is a notion often taken for granted and not explicated. The papers in this theme issue analyse personhood from a range of perspectives related to philosophies conceptualizing the idea of person. They look at how such philosophies have been applied in nursing and the broader healthcare, and also contribute with a critique thereof. The contributions in this theme issue aim to remedy this and advance the field of nursing philosophy as an internationally established discipline (e.g., Risjord, 2011). All contributions were presented in 2021 at the 24th International Philosophy of Nursing Conference, hosted by the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, and specifically, the Institute of Health and Care Sciences that hosts the University of Gothenburg Centre for Person-Centred Care. The 24th IPONS conference was actually the first one ever held online. The conference brought together scholars representing four continents and with an interest in philosophical inquiry as related to nursing and the wider healthcare practice, theory, research, education and policy from a wide range of perspectives and disciplinary backgrounds.
