  • The Swedish Social Democrats, Reform Socialism and the state after the Golden Era
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Socialists and the State in the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030415396 - 9783030415402 ; , s. 323-343
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Swedish Social Democratic welfare state system that peaked during the 1970s was based on a common belief in the existence of strong and potent state with strong tendencies toward a de-commodification. However, with the Palme government in 1982, Social democrats accepted the idea that the welfare state should be reoriented around a prevailing notion of individualization, and be a vehicle in particular for a middle-class strategy of social mobility tightly entangled with consumer preference. In subsequent decades, a complex and multi-motivational process of privatization was carried out as a de facto alliance between Left and Right. In the 2000s, the Party has abandoned control of the welfare state as part of its reformist strategy or “power resource”.

  • Ferrite content measurement in super duplex stainless steel welds
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Welding in the World. - : Springer Verlag. - 0043-2288 .- 1878-6669. ; 63:2, s. 551-563
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Approaches to determining ferrite fraction (%) and ferrite number (FN) were examined for super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) welds. A reference sample was produced by bead-on-plate gas–tungsten arc welding of a type-2507 SDSS plate. By comparing different etchants and measurement practices, it was realized that etching with modified Beraha followed by computerized image analysis (IA) was the most accurate and quickest technique to measure ferrite fraction, which determined the same ferrite fraction (68.0 ± 2.6%) as that measured by electron diffraction backscattered analysis (67.6 ± 2.3%). A Round Robin test was performed on a reference sample at University West, Swerea KIMAB, Outokumpu Stainless, and Sandvik Materials Technology to investigate the repeatability of the technique. The ferrite fraction measurements performed at different laboratories showed very small variations, which were in the range of those seen when changing microscope in the same laboratory. After verification of the technique, the relationship between ferrite fraction and ferrite number (measured with FERITSCOPE®) was determined using 14 single (root) pass welds, including butt, corner, and T-, V-, and double V-joint geometries. The best-fit equation found in this study was ferrite number (FN) = 1.1 × ferrite fraction (%). To conclude, the ferrite fraction technique suggested in the present paper was accurate and repeatable, which made it possible to determine a ferrite fraction–ferrite number formula for SDSS single-pass welds.

  • Sweden and the long ‘1968’ : break or continuity?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0346-8755 .- 1502-7716. ; 33, s. 339-352
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first part gives a chronological overview of the Swedish ‘1968’, in this article defined as a phenomenon with its roots in the late 1950s and it’s end around 1980. Three phases are identified: a ‘liberal’ until 1965, a ‘red’ in the late 1960s and the ‘diversified’ 1970s. Underlying this time schedule are two characteristics of the Swedish ‘1968’ in its extended form: the role of the social movements and the interaction between old and new movements; and the unique role of the intellectuals. The second part discusses the (late and limited) research so far on this topic in Sweden. The academic works are still few and the critical debate little developed. One of the topics discussed is to what extent ‘1968’ was something fundamentally new and to what extent it was influenced by older social movements.

  • The decline of Nordic social democracy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Nordic Economic, Social and Political Model. - London : Routledge. - 9780367134754 - 9780429026690 ; , s. 124-137
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Social democracy has generally been considered one of the most successful political forces of the 1900s. The Nordic model, building on the institutionalized, corporatist collaboration between capital, labour and state and long extolled as a successful compromise between a communist planned economy and free market capitalism, has close links to Nordic social democracy. The organizational home of Nordic social democracy has been the Social Democratic parties; working-class dominated mass parties with deep roots in trade unions and popular movements. In the mid-20th century, to follow the political thread, social democracy formulated an objective that found more mass support than any other leftist idea: to offer citizens protection against the inequalities created by an unregulated market. The broad definition of social democracy is, meanwhile, used in an attempt to single out some central features of a common reformist ideology that Social Democrats tried to translate into political action.

  • The Swedish Social Democracy : Civil Servants, Social Engineers and Welfare Bureaucrats
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Socialists and the State in the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030415396 - 9783030415402 ; , s. 207-222
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Östberg’s article is discussing the development of a social democratic welfare bureaucracy in Sweden during the twentieth century, for a long time a success story. At an early stage the social democrats’ ability to assume control over the state administration depended on the possibility to find intellectuals sympathetic to the social democratic cause. For the greatly expanding welfare state of the 1960s, a broadening spectrum of well-educated men and women, all clearly sympathetic to the social democratic project of building a welfare state, was available. The party’s long, uninterrupted period of government made it easier for the social democrats to put their stamp on the state bureaucracy. As the social democrats’ reformist ambitions have dwindled, so has the need of a special welfare bureaucracy.
