Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
- This book is the result of a long-term ethnographical study of Jana Sanskriti (JS), Centre for Theatre of the Oppressed, and the sociocultural, economic and political context in which the work of JS is embedded. For several years, Dia Da Costa has followed the unique project of performances and field work led by Sanjoy Ganguly and his team in West Bengal. As one member of the team points out, ‘the number of researchers who have come here are not few’ (159). The possibility of enrichment by seeing your own work from an outsider's perspective is not given. The crucial component is ‘spending time enough for the veil to come off, for a performance of interest to turn into involved commitment’ (158). To me, as a reader, there is no doubt about Da Costas’ commitment. ‘Thick descriptions’, related research and statistics are interwoven, and the text reaches out in many directions.
