  • 1995
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is an analysis and comparative study of medieval Mediterranean urban patterns. With urban patterns is meant the arrangement of houses and public spaces with special regard to the relations between them. The thesis contains four parts. Previous research on Muslim cities is described and commented in the first part. A difference between research before and after 1960 is noted. The Medina of Fes is discussed in the second part. In an historical background sketch the foundation of the Medina and its development are presented. The spatial analysis shows that the physical structure of the Medina is based on a primary pattern unit of a square courtyard house with a closed, inward-turned physical structure. A number of these primary units are grouped around a cul de sac to form a second-level community unit; a number of these latter form a quarter. The quarters are adjacent and close to each other which means that the Medina as a whole can be regarded as a complex physical and social unit surrounded with the city walls. In a comparable approach the physical and social structure of Siena is studied. The primary units here are the casa corte, which is similar to the courtyard of the Medina, and the casa a schiera which is a filehouse without any comparative physical form in the medina. These two different primary units engendered two types of building patterns, one in the city centre where courtyard units are grouped around a central square, and the other one in the periphery of the city formed by the alignment of the filehouses along the street. An attempt to compare the physical and social units in the Medina and Siena is made in the fourth part of this thesis. The primary units, the community units, the quarters and the cities are compared. This comparative study shows that the similarities between the Medina and Siena are much more apparent on the social level and on the level of the smaller physical units, i.e. the habitat, than between the larger social and physical composition of the quarters.

  • The study of urban form in Sweden
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Urban Morphology. - : INT SEMINAR URBAN FORM. - 1027-4278. ; 13:2, s. 121-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early research on urban form in Sweden was undertaken before the First World War. After the Second World War research was influenced by the major criticisms levelled at comprehensive urban renewal and suburban mass housing. These criticisms were particularly on the ground that values embodied in the traditional built environment were being ignored. Increased interest in the study of historical urban fabrics was associated with the development of methodologies reliant on the concepts of typology and morphology. These development were dependent on the activities of individual researchers until the very recent development of wider co-ordinating research organizations.

  • Safety and Sustainability in the Community Planning Process : Actors' Interests, Roles and Influences
  • 2006
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The licentiate dissertation “Safety and Sustainability in the Community Planning Process – Actors’ Interests, Roles and Influence” has in three case studies over detailed development planning processes examined how issues related to safety and sustainability are handled in Swedish municipal planning. The research project has focused on three municipal actors; the Planning Office, the Environmental Agency and the Fire and Rescue Services. The complete planning process has been assessed, starting with comprehensive planning, to detailed development planning and on to building permit assessment. The project’s aim has been to investigate how actors’ roles, interests, responsibilities and position influence the planning process. A handling procedure of preventing accidents instead of treating damages caused by accidents is increasingly stressed in society, with the effect that emphasis of handling these matters is given to community planning. This shift in turn has the effect that safety and sustainability become central in community planning, at the same time as new actors’ active participation is requested. One outcome is that municipal authorities such as the Environmental Agency and the Fire and Rescue Services are increasingly invited to actively participate in the plan work. Both actors have important roles in guarding safety and sustainability issues. Their approaches to these issues however differ, which influences how the matters are handled. The Planning Office has the role of balancing and transforming other planning participants’ contribution to the planning process. They also have responsibility of directing the process ahead. Actors participate in planning based on their knowledge, competence, interests and perspectives, but have to relate to conditions in-built in the planning context. The study has provided a view of actors work with safety and sustainability in community planning. Especially regarding collaboration between actors, actors’ access to planning as well as their possibilities for influence. A number of key issues have been extracted, which adjusted to the local planning context can favour the development of a safe and sustainable urban environment.

  • European planning history in the 20th century : A continent of urban planning
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The history of Europe in the 20th century is closely tied to the history of urban planning. Social and economic progress but also the brute treatment of people and nature throughout Europe were possible due to the use of urban planning and the other levels of spatial planning. Thereby, planning has constituted itself in Europe as an international subject. Since its emergence, through intense exchange but also competition, despite country differences, planning has developed as a European field of practice and scientific discipline. Planning is here much more than the addition of individual histories; however, historiography has treated this history very selective regarding geography and content. This book searches for an understanding of the historiography of planning in a European dimension. Scholars from Eastern and Western, Southern and Northern Europe address the issues of the public led production of city and the social functions of urban planning in capitalist and state-socialist countries. The examined examples include Poland and USSR, Czech Republic and Slovakia, UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, Portugal and Spain, Italy, and Sweden. The book will be of interest to students and scholars for Urbanism, Urban/Town Planning, Spatial Planning, Spatial Politics, Urban Development, Urban Policies, Planning History and European History of the 20th Century. • Space in motion : the art of activating space in-between
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As a contribution to the emerging field of practice-based research in the arts, this thesis aims to activate space, experience and the concept in-between. As the in-between cannot be defined ahead of the rhythmic process it carries out and of which it is a part – a rhythm inherent in the city itself and in knowledge production – it is necessary to produce rhythmic relations between bodies, sites and concepts. An art experiment, a forty-two meter high swing mounted on the bridge, Älvborgsbron, in Gothenburg harbour, Sweden, serves as the point of entry to the thesis. A dancer in the swing moved slowly between the bridge and the ground, captured in a rhythmic experience of being earthbound and then weightless. The swing project, together with other rhythmic processes such as walking, weaving and acting physics, activate spatial, temporal and theoretical dimensions of the in-between. Merging my roles as an artist, teacher and researcher by pragmatic production, perception and concepts it becomes possible to transform the rhythms between the examples:   1. A swing mounted on a bridge; one of my art projects. 2. Walking and mapping strategies; as developed in my courses taught at the School of Architecture. 3. The myth about Penelope weaving. 4. Rhythmic relations between bodies and machines at CERN, the particle physics laboratory outside Geneva, a place that is important for several of my art projects.   Creative production aims to expand the capacity of the body.  By employing a bridging structure, spaces in-between are activated thus revealing the power and danger in-between. In that production collective processes merge, creating “social and collective machines” and another reality between:   1. bridge/swing/dancer, 2. map/walking/site, 3. war/loom/weaving, 4. theory/detector/bodies.   These rhythmic processes oscillate between representation and the complex forces of daily activities. However, it is not the rhythm itself that activates spaces in-between but, rather, the changing of directions of the rhythm: from moving to be in motion; from walking forward to walking and falling; from weaving cloth to producing time; from doing physics to acting physics. Activating in-between spaces means activating differences and another way of producing knowledge, a well-known strategy in contemporary art: a production of potential realities, in a constant interaction between concepts and spatial transformations.
