    • By performing local projective measurements on a two-qubit entangled state one can certify in a device-independent way up to one bit of randomness. We show here that general measurements, defined by positive-operator-valued measures, can certify up to two bits of randomness, which is the optimal amount of randomness that can be certified from an entangled bit. General measurements thus provide an advantage over projective ones for device-independent randomness certification.

  • Dynamics of Quantum Correlations with Photons : Experiments on bound entanglement and contextuality for application in quantum information

    • The rapidly developing interdisciplinary field of quantum information, which merges quantum and information science, studies non-classical aspects of quantum systems. These studies are motivated by the promise that the non-classicality can be used to solve tasks more efficiently than classical methods would allow. In many quantum informational studies, non-classical behaviour is attributed to the notion of entanglement.In this thesis we use photons to experimentally investigate fundamental questions such as: What happens to the entanglement in a system when it is affected by noise? In our study of noisy entanglement we pursue the challenging task of creating bound entanglement. Bound entangled states are created through an irreversible process that requires entanglement. Once in the bound regime, entanglement cannot be distilled out through local operations assisted by classical communication. We show that it is possible to experimentally produce four-photon bound entangled states and that a violation of a Bell inequality can be achieved. Moreover, we demonstrate an entanglement-unlocking protocol by relaxing the condition of local operations.We also explore the non-classical nature of quantum mechanics in several single-photon experiments. In these experiments, we show the violation of various inequalities that were derived under the assumption of non-contextuality. Using qutrits we construct and demonstrate the simplest possible test that offers a discrepancy between classical and quantum theory. Furthermore, we perform an experiment in the spirit of the Kochen-Specker theorem to illustrate the state-independence of this theorem. Here, we investigate whether or not measurement outcomes exhibit fully contextual correlations. That is, no part of the correlations can be attributed to the non-contextual theory. Our results show that only a small part of the experimental generated correlations are amenable to a non-contextual interpretation.

  • Fully Nonlocal, Monogamous, and Random Genuinely Multipartite Quantum Correlations

    • Local measurements on bipartite maximally entangled states can yield correlations that are maximally nonlocal, monogamous, and with fully random outcomes. This makes these states ideal for bipartite cryptographic tasks. Genuine-multipartite nonlocality constitutes a stronger notion of nonlocality in the multipartite case. Maximal genuine-multipartite nonlocality, monogamy, and random outcomes are thus highly desired properties for genuine-multipartite cryptographic scenarios. We prove that local measurements on any Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state can produce correlations that are fully genuine-multipartite nonlocal, monogamous, and with fully random outcomes. A key ingredient in our proof is a multipartite chained Bell inequality detecting genuine-multipartite nonlocality, which we introduce. Finally, we discuss applications to device-independent secret sharing.

    • Quantum mechanics is a nonlocal theory, but not as nonlocal as the no-signalling principle allows. However, there exist quantum correlations that exhibit maximal nonlocality: they are as nonlocal as any nonsignalling correlation and thus have a local content, quantified by the fraction p(L) of events admitting a local description, equal to zero. We exploit the known link between the Kochen-Specker and Bell theorems to derive a maximal violation of a Bell inequality from every Kochen-Specker proof. We then show that these Bell inequalities lead to experimental bounds on the local content of quantum correlations that are significantly better than those based on other constructions. We perform the experimental demonstration of a Bell test originating from the Peres-Mermin Kochen-Specker proof, providing an upper bound on the local content pL less than or similar to 0.22.

  • Efficient device-independent entanglement detection for multipartite systems

    • Entanglement is one of the most studied properties of quantum mechanics for its application in quantum information protocols. Nevertheless, detecting the presence of entanglement in large multipartite sates keeps being a great challenge both from the theoretical and the experimental point of view. Most of the known methods either have computational costs that scale inefficiently with the number of parties or require more information on the state than what is attainable in every-day experiments. We introduce a new technique for entanglement detection that provides several important advantages in these respects. First, its scales efficiently with the number of parties, thus allowing for application to systems composed by up to few tens of parties. Second, it needs only the knowledge of a subset of all possible measurements on the state, therefore being apt for experimental implementation. Moreover, since it is based on the detection of nonlocality, our method is device-independent. We report several examples of its implementation for well-known multipartite states, showing that the introduced technique has a promising range of applications.

  • Simulating positive-operator-valued measures with projective measurements

    • Standard projective measurements represent a subset of all possible measurements in quantum physics. In fact, non-projective measurements are relevant for many applications, e.g. for estimation problems or transformations among entangled states. In this work we study what quantum measurements can be simulated by using only projective measurements and classical randomness. We first prove that every measurement on a given quantum system can be realised by a projective-simulable measurement on a system enlarged by an ancilla of the same dimension. Then, given a general measurement in dimension two or three, we show that deciding whether it is projective-simulable can be solved by means of semi-definite programming. We also establish conditions for the simulation of measurements using projective ones valid for any dimension. As an application of our formalism, we improve the range of visibilities for which two-qubit Werner states do not violate any Bell inequality for all measurements. From an implementation point of view, our results provide bounds on the amount of noise a general measurement tolerates before losing any advantage over projective ones.

  • Bell inequalities for maximally entangled states

    • Bell inequalities have traditionally been used to demonstrate that quantum theory is nonlocal, in the sense that there exist correlations generated from composite quantum states that cannot be explained by means of local hidden variables. With the advent of device-independent quantum information processing, Bell inequalities have gained an additional role as certificates of relevant quantum properties. In this work we consider the problem of designing Bell inequalities that are tailored to detect the presence of maximally entangled states. We introduce a class of Bell inequalities valid for an arbitrary number of measurements and results, derive analytically their maximal violation and prove that it is attained by maximally entangled states. Our inequalities can therefore find an application in device-independent protocols requiring maximally entangled states.

    • The concept of bilocality was introduced to study the correlations which arise in an entanglement-swapping scenario, where one has two sources which can naturally be taken to be independent. This additional constraint leads to stricter requirements than simply imposing locality, in the form of bilocality inequalities. In this work we consider a natural generalization of the bilocality scenario; namely, the star network consisting of a single central party surrounded by n edge parties, each of which shares an independent source with the center. We derive inequalities which are satisfied by all local correlations in this scenario, for the cases when the central party performs (i) two dichotomic measurements (ii) a single Bell-state measurement. We demonstrate quantum violations of these inequalities and study both the robustness to noise and to losses.
